for DAMAGING WINDS
For people in King Island, Furneaux Islands, South East, North East, East Coast, Central North, Central Plateau, Midlands and parts of Western, Upper Derwent Valley and North West Coast Forecast Districts.Issued at 10:17 am Thursday, 10 May 2018.
DAMAGING SOUTH TO SOUTHEASTERLY WINDS DURING THURSDAY AFTERNOON AND FRIDAY
Weather Situation:
An intense low pressure centre and trough will develop off the east coast of Tasmania during Thursday and slowly move away on Friday.
DAMAGING SOUTH TO SOUTHEASTERLY WINDS, averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts up to 100 km/h, are expected to develop about east, south and west Tasmanian coasts Thursday afternoon.
DAMAGING SOUTHEASTERLY WINDS are then expected to extend across much of Tasmania except parts of the west and northwest from early Friday.
Note that strong southeasterly winds are reasonably uncommon over Tasmania so impacts may be different to what is usually experienced in windy conditions.
Locations which may be affected include Launceston, St Helens, Swansea, Hobart, Geeveston and Dover.
The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Supervise children closely.
* Check that family and neighbours are aware of warnings.
* Manage pets and livestock.
* Secure outdoor items including furniture and play equipment.
* Be prepared in case of power outages.
* Beware of damaged trees and power lines and take care when driving.
* Listen to the ABC radio or check www.ses.tas.gov.au for further advice.
* For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132500.
The next Severe Weather Warning will be issued by 5pm Thursday.
