Railway restoration's high price

IT would cost about $60 million to restore the Derwent Valley Line to operational status beyond New Norfolk, TasRail chief executive officer Damien White told ABC Radio this morning. The line has terminated at Boyer for some years since access was restricted by a previous owner of the state rail network.

Despite the long-term lack of access to the line, the Derwent Valley Railway Preservation Society remains active and welcomes members. More here.

  1. It would probably cost that amount to restore the entire track, BUT that does not mean that some sections are not serviceable, e.g. Westerway/National Park/Maydena for tourist traffic.
