Reader's letter - the gate

New Norfolk's new entry sign defaced
IT is interesting and frustrating to see that "The Gate" at the entrance to New Norfolk on the Lyell Highway has multiple purposes. Currently it is covered by a banner advertising the Derwent Valley Garden Club's annual flower show this weekend.  It’s not surprising that signs are being strung on "The Gate" given the example set by the Derwent Valley Council.  One can only wonder what will be next.

  1. The DVC has set the example, advertising themselves in a bigger font than the name of the town you are entering!!!

  2. I was disappointed to see the flower show sign hung over the permanent sign. I thought that the new sign was a great improvement (especially since it incorporated some components from the RDH site). However, hanging the flower banner over it just makes it look untidy.
Surely there is an alternative to this?

  3. Perhaps if the “Welcome” sign had been designed in suitable size and stature to welcome all persons into the “Historic Township” of New Norfolk; it would not have been used as a “coat hanger” for other purposes!

Driving into the township at the recommended speed limit; it is extremely difficult to even see the sign amongst the “conglomeration” of other for sale signs surrounding the immediate area.

New Norfolk has Historic value and interests to tourists and the entrance of the Township should be proudly displayed for all to clearly see, not have to look for it in hope of finding it!

Those whom designed this roadside sign; should seriously consider an improvement that would be inviting and hugely visible to all traffic entering our Historic Town rather than having a “clothes hanger” for more distasteful signs!

  4. Suggest a background of some sort to the sign? Perhaps planted vegetation that would form a backdrop and block out any future distractions.
Also, simplification of the permanent sign to just say "Welcome to New Norfolk", or something equally similar.
"Derwent Valley Council" means nothing to tourists.

  5. What about a sign that says "Nawfik - abandon hope all ye who enter "

  6. johnd - what components from the RDH site? Them's not the supposed Willow Court gates if that's what you're referring to! Look more old Milbrook Rise to me, but then again I'm getting a bit long in the tooth and my memory is not what it used to be.
I do agree that the DVC Tidy Towns signage is really stupid - and the wrong date for when those excellent people won the award too - and it would be much more attractive stating the historical nature of the town - boo hiss to the designer/s.
Given that the council have allowed this use, it will now be open slather for anyone to do the same. Go you good Garage Sale people!!
