How much more interesting it would be for tourists and locals alike if the wonderful stories of New Norfolk's built and social history were permanently displayed. What is needed in New Norfolk is a heritage trail with interpretation boards that depict pictures and stories of significant sites, historical events and social stories around the whole town, linking Willow Court, the town, Esplanade and Turriff Lodge and other sites that are of significance.
The current Spatial Plan that is open to public comment until November 24 attempts to address this issue.

Have to agree about interpretation boards. The few signs on some buildings in the town are a start, but they are too short on info, and give no context.
ReplyDeleteSome examples of good ideas that can be pinched:
The plaques in the footpath in North Hobart.
The historical context signs in the Chinatown section of Broome WA.
Historical tourist maps that define a walking path around the town and the wider area.
Audio tour file(s) that can be downloaded from a website as podcasts onto any MP3 player.
No single one of the above is a quick fix, but ideas like the above can be built into a broader strategy.
There also needs to be recognition that any historical (or any other tourism) outcomes need to be updated regularly to bring people back a second or third time.
Finally, the council needs to embrace the historical tourism aspect of New Norfolk and surrounds fully, and develop an achievable tourism strategy.
Do you have some more info on this spatial plan? Is there an online form or an email address we could send comments to?
