School surprise

Blair Street Kindergarten
DOCUMENTS tabled in the Legislative Council this week contained the surprising information that New Norfolk's Blair St Kindergarten had closed in 1992. Responding to a question from Independent Labor member Mike Gaffney MLC on Tuesday, Government Leader Doug Parkinson MLC tabled a long list of state schools which had been closed or opened in the last 20 years.

Second on the list was Blair St Kindergarten, which by all accounts was still open today, despite being listed by Mr Parkinson as having been closed and disposed of nearly 20 years ago.

The list did not include the closure of the former Royal Derwent Hospital Special School (now the Derwent Valley Community House) although that may have fallen outside the 20-year timeframe. Similarly, the list did not include the downgrading of the Ouse District High School to primary school status last year.

More accurately, the list included the following closures of Derwent Valley schools in the last 20 years:
  • Wayatinah Primary School - annexed to Ouse District High School in 1992, prior to complete closure.
  • Tarraleah Primary School - annexed to Ouse District High School in 2001, prior to complete closure and sale.
  • Strathgordon Primary School - annexed to Glenora District High School in 1994, prior to complete closure and demolition.

  1. Is this the first 'failure to read' by local MLC Farrell - this is surely one of the schools he should know better has not been closed? Is this typical dumb administration from the Labor/Green government or highlights the need to clear out a few lazy public servants/minders?

  2. Keith,
The annexure to which the above details are taken from have a "status" column that states that the education delivery services were annexed to New Norfolk Primary School. This means that Blair Street Kinder is responsible to New Norfolk Primary School - to which Anker Fugslang is the Principal.

These records are the Hansard records only and it is possible that MLC Farrell mentioned that this school was still operating and it wasn't recorded as Hansard had stopped recording.

Also if correct research was done by all posting the story and comments they would have searched the Tas Education website and found that Blair street does not have a listing in the Schools Directory. This clearly shows that the information is correct. The parents whose children have and do attend Blair Street would all know that the kinder is a branch of New Norfolk Primary School.

Another point I would like to make is that you say our pollies are "lazy", I'd like to see you take on the role and live through the endless reading, the long days and nights, the endless functions and events, and on top of this address and deal with concerns from constituents in the electorate. I certainly would not say this was "lazy"!
