Flood Watch for the River Derwent Basin

Note: This Flood Watch is a "heads up" for possible future flooding and is NOT a Flood Warning.

Continued river rises are expected in the Derwent catchment and minor flooding may develop at some locations over the weekend.

A cold front will cross Tasmania on Sunday morning, bringing a southwesterly stream which will continue throughout Sunday and into Monday.

The Derwent catchment is wet after recent rainfall. Rainfall totals of 20-40 mm have been recorded In the 72 hours to 2pm Saturday, with 50-60 mm recorded in elevated areas.

Persistent showers are expected through the weekend. Rainfall totals of 20-40 mm are forecast, with higher totals up to 50 mm possible in isolated areas. Snow is expected overnight Saturday into Sunday. Snow melt may add to runoff. Showers will ease on Monday.

Continued river rises are expected in the River Derwent and its tributaries over the weekend. Minor flooding may develop at some locations.

Further catchment specific warnings will be issued if and when required.

Severe Weather Warning
for DAMAGING WINDS

For people in King Island, Furneaux Islands, Western, Upper Derwent Valley, South East, North West Coast, Central Plateau and parts of Central North and Midlands Forecast Districts.

Issued at 4:02 am Sunday, 8 July 2018.

Damaging southwesterly winds are possible over western, central and southern areas, and the Bass Strait Islands during Sunday.

Weather Situation: A vigorous west to southwesterly stream will persist throughout most of Sunday until a slight easing in the evening.

DAMAGING WEST TO SOUTHWESTERLY WINDS, averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts in excess of 100 km/h are possible over western, central and southern areas, and the Bass Strait Islands during Sunday. Winds are expected to moderate slightly on Sunday evening.

Locations which may be affected include Burnie, Strahan, Queenstown, Bothwell, Geeveston and Dover.

In the last 6 hours, the strongest wind gusts reported were 135 km/h at Mount Read, 131 km/h at Hogan Island, 124 km/h at Tasman Island, 120 km/h at Cape Grim and 113 km/h at Cape Bruny.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Supervise children closely.
* Check that family and neighbours are aware of warnings.
* Manage pets and livestock.
* Secure outdoor items including furniture and play equipment.
* Be prepared in case of power outages and report any outages to TasNetworks on 132 004.
* Beware of damaged trees and power lines and take care when driving.
* Listen to the ABC radio or check www.ses.tas.gov.au for further advice.
* For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132500.

Warning to Sheep Graziers
for the Furneaux Islands, Midlands, East Coast, Upper Derwent Valley and South East forecast districts

Issued at 4:50am on Sunday 8 July 2018.

Sheep graziers are warned that cold temperatures, showers and strong southwesterly winds are expected during Sunday. Areas likely to be affected include parts of the Furneaux Islands, Midlands, East Coast, Upper Derwent Valley and South East forecast districts. There is a risk of losses of lambs and sheep exposed to these conditions.

The next warning will be issued by 11am Sunday.
