Men’s One Day matches
Finals - Week 1
With the first week of finals now played, some sides bowed out while others are still in contention and some of those teams have advanced to their respective grand finals. Let’s take a look at each of the matches played in hot and humid conditions that saw temperatures reach close to 40 degrees on Saturday.
FIRST GRADE
In the qualifying final at Eady St, New Norfolk I went down to Wellington by just 15 runs. Having first hit, the Warriors made 8/253 from their 50 overs. In reply, the Red Caps started well with openers Seb Wishart and Jordan Willoughby putting on an 84-run partnership. Willoughby made 34 from 54 (five fours, one six) while Wishart was at his best making 91 from just 104 deliveries - his innings included 10 fours. Coming in at number four, Rohan Heron made 33 (57) (four fours) and put on 63 with Wishart and took the score to 3/179. But from here, New Norfolk lost 7/59 and was bowled out for 238 off 49.1 overs. Jordan Banks-Smith made 29 (31) and Jason Rigby 14 (18). With the ball, the main wicket-takers were Jason Rigby with 3-46 (9), Nathan Eiszele 2-46 (10), Jamie Maddox 1-19 (3), Seb Wishart 1-35 (8) and Jordan Willoughby 1-44 (6). New Norfolk will now take on St Aidans at Tynwald Park this Saturday in the do or die first semi-final.
With an excellent spell of spin bowling and great captain's knock, Gretna I defeated Sorell by nine wickets in the second semi-final to advance to its first Southern Cricket Association grand final. Playing at Sorell, the home team won the toss and elected to bat. After going OK at 3/62, Sorell then lost 7/50 to be all out for 112 from 34.5 overs. This was due to the very good spell of bowling from spinner Craig Cunningham who sent down seven overs to capture 4-11. The all-rounder who now has 37 wickets thus far, totally had the Sorell batsmen bamboozled from start to finish. Openers Mathew Burns 3/43 (10) and Corey Ransley 0/23 (10) were outstanding with their pressure, while Aaron Maddox was tidy with 1-27 (7) and Ben Rainbird picked up the last wicket taking 1-1 (0.5). In reply, it was opener Ben Rainbird who, with a terrific captain's knock of 69 not out, steered his team to a very important win. Rainbird belted 9 fours during his innings and with first drop Rhys Browning giving his captain great support with 30no (two fours), the pair shared a 96-run partnership on the hottest day of the cricket season in 38 degree heat. This match began with the temperature at 30 and it was only 10.30am. Gretna now awaits the result of the preliminary final between Sorell and the Knights.
“The Unbeatable’s”, New Norfolk II, cruised into the grand final with a big eight-wicket win over Campania in the second semi-final at Tynwald Park on Saturday. A terrific all-round effort from evergreen Stewart Rice steered the Red Caps to the big win by taking 3-11 from 8 overs and then belting 52 from just 31 balls. Rice, who opened the batting, took to the bowlers from the word go - hitting a massive 46 runs in boundaries with 10 fours and one six. The only thing Campania won all day was the toss, but from there it was bundled out for just 85 and in reply, New Norfolk chased down the small total finishing 2/86 off just 11.5 overs. Opener Leigh Berry made 7, Chris Ashcroft 13 not out from 15 deliveries, and Cody Neads 8no from five deliveries. Earlier, with the ball, Jamie Hill joined in the action taking 3-27 from nine overs in a great spell of bowling. Aaron Drew was excellent taking 2-15 (5) as was Richard Graham with 1-6 off seven overs including four maidens. But it was David Mitchelmore who was the tightest of all, claiming 2-0 from two overs. Nice work David. New Norfolk now has this weekend off and will wait to see who their opponents will be, Campania or the MacKillop Beltas.
In the first semi-final at St Virgil’s College, Molesworth II went down to Sorell by 50 runs. Sorell had first hit and made 7/186 of its 40 overs. John Fowle was the main wicket-taker with good figures of 3/23 off 8 overs. Brad Jarvis took 1-24 (6.3), Captain Sam Triffitt 1-31 (5) and Michael Murray 1-40 (6.3). Brent Slater effected a run-out. In reply, Molesworth was bowled out for 136 off 36.5 overs. Anthony Murray stood tall making a very good 48. Sam Triffitt made 22 while Michael Murray made 11 as did Kye Tomkinson who remained not out. Bad luck guys, you have done a great job through out the season and who knows, next season could be the one.
