Relay for Life named community event of the year

THE local event that has raised more than $150,000 for cancer research and support has been recognised with the Derwent Valley Council's Australia Day Award for Community Event of the Year.

The Derwent Valley Relay for Life has been run by local volunteers since 2015 and with the support of the wider community has raised more than $150,000 for Cancer Council Tasmania. This money goes to cancer support, education, advocacy and research.

The first Derwent Valley Relay for Life was held at Boyer Oval, New Norfolk, in 2015. It moved to Tynwald Park for the subsequent relays in 2016, 2017 and 2019.

Last year's relay involved 15 teams and 291 participants walking laps at Tynwald Park for sponsorship, working together towards a common goal and sending a positive message supporting those undergoing treatment for cancer, remembering those lost to cancer, and offering hope for a cancer free world in the future.

The Community Event of the Year Award was accepted by Cancer Council Tasmania's Relay for Life state project manager, Anthony Edwards, at last Sunday's Derwent Valley Australia Day celebration.

"I would like to acknowledge the people around here who make an impact to our wonderful community of the Derwent Valley, because whilst it is our event it is actually people and those individuals out there who do special things in our community that make it special," Mr Edwards said. "Whether you are an award recipient or not, congratulations and I acknowledge everything you do."

The illuminated "Hope" sign is a feature of each Relay for Life.

Mr Edwards said the Relay for Life had special meaning in the community. "It's a fundraising event that allows Cancer Council to do what it does, and all the services it provides in the community," he said.

"But it's also about walking the track, and for individuals who have that special meaning, that special reason why they come to Relay for Life for their family and friends. Thank you for continuing to support support this significant event and supporting the community of the Derwent Valley," he said.

Friday: Total Fire Ban continues

TODAY is the second day of the Tasmania Fire Service's two-day Total Fire Ban declaration for January 30 and 31 in the state's south, including the Derwent Valley, as well as two northern municipalities.

No fires may be lit or allowed to remain alight in the open air until 2am tomorrow, Saturday, February 1. This includes (but is not limited to) incinerators, burn-offs, campfires, fire pots, and wood-fuelled barbecues. Machinery including lawn mowers that could cause a spark, should not be used.

In New Norfolk the temperature is forecast to reach 40 degrees today, with a 90 per cent chance of late rain and a thunderstorm in the evening. Tomorrow's maximum is forecast to be 28 degrees, with a 70 per cent chance of rain in the morning with the chance of a thunderstorm.

Young local cricketers in Northern Suburbs contest

ELEVEN New Norfolk Under 13 cricketers played in the inaugural Northern Suburbs Community Cricket Shield on January 19, organised by the Glenorchy Cricket Club.

Players were mixed into four different teams along with other players from the Glenorchy, Wellington and St Anne's clubs.

The day saw six matches of 14 overs per innings played at Cadbury Oval and Abbotsfield Park, with the top two teams then playing off in the grand final.

Team Horne, 3/72 off 14 overs, defeated Team Daft, 8/54 off 12.3 overs, in the final at Cadbury. Red Caps juniors Connor Mayne, Liam Maw, Zayne Field and Hamish Edwards played in the winning team. It was an exciting time for the boys, who proudly received premiership medals.

Hyland played in the runner-up team.

Edwards remained 8 not out from 10 deliveries, Field made 5 off 3, Connor Mayne was 2no and Maw made 1. There were also New Norfolk boys in the runner-up team, with Cooper Gleeson making 4 from 9 deliveries and Callan Barry 1 from 6. With the ball, Chance Hyland took 1-9 from 1 over and Steele Quarrell 0-6 off 1 over.

In the 3rd v 4th match, Team Palmer 5/70 off 14 overs was defeated by Team Spotswood 8/89 off 12.2 overs. Doing well for Team Palmer, Logan Hunt opened the batting and made 12 from just 14 balls, while Bobby Nossiter also did very well, making 11 not out from 12. Fearghus Joyce bowled well taking 1-13 off 1 over, as did Logan Hunt taking 1-14 off 1.

During the presentations, special awards were presented to three players from each team for special achievements across all matches played on the day.

Of the New Norfolk boys, Zayne Field, Cooper Gleeson and Bobby Nossiter each collected vouchers for The Cricket Hub in Kingston.

All our boys were terrific in the way they represented themselves and the club through out the whole day. Over all, it was a well organised day which will only get better. Excellent work by Damien West and the Glenorchy Cricket Club's senior players and officials.

Australia Day: Leading citizens acknowledged

THE award for Derwent Valley Citizen of the Year has been shared by a local teacher and a successful businessman, and an award for local Senior Citizen of the Year has been presented for the first time.

Craig Youd and Justin Derksen were named as the first joint-winners of Citizen of the Year during the Derwent Valley Australia Day celebration on Sunday. John Geraghty was named Senior Citizen of the Year.

Mr Youd has spent three decades at New Norfolk as a teacher and also serving as assistant principal for many years. He has supported students in extra-curricular activities and community events such as Anzac and Remembrance Days, New Norfolk Christmas Parade and Light the Night, and as a chaperone on mainland tours.

Accepting the award, Mr Youd acknowledged all the staff of New Norfolk High School, past and present, who had also given up many hours of their own time to support students in extra-curricular activities.

"Perhaps I'm remembered simply because I've been here forever but there are many, many other staff who have done the same thing," Mr Youd said, adding that the school was very well run. "We are doing the best we possibly can for the youth of New Norfolk and we hope to have your assistance in doing that in the future. So, thank you very much."

Mr Derksen's award recognised the contribution his family business Crusader Homes is having on the Derwent Valley, both as an employer of 15 people and the winner of multiple awards during the last year, including being named the Small Employer of the year at the Australian Training Awards.

Outside of work, he has also been a leader in the Australian Army Cadets for many years and was promoted to major last year.

Addressing the crowd after accepting his citizenship award, Mr Derksen said he was a firm believer in family, friends, community and love. "And from most of those origins, we can fix most of our problems," he said.

A recent review of the Derwent Valley Council's Australia Day Awards policy resulted in the introduction of a Senior Citizen award and John Geraghty of Bushy Park is the inaugural recipient.

Mr Geraghty has given decades of voluntary service to the community since moving to the Derwent Valley as a young man more than 40 years ago.

He is valued by his peers for his reliability, deep local knowledge, handiness, kindness and dedication to charitable works.

Not-for-profit organisations that Mr Geraghty remains engaged with today include the Bushy Park Show Society for 39 years as a committee member, life member and ground keeper.  He has been a member of the Independent Order of Oddfellows' Loyal Glenora Lodge for 36 years, and a member of the New Norfolk RSL for more than 30 years.

Australia Day: Young sportswomen celebrated

TWO young sportswomen were recognised in the Derwent Valley Council's Australia Day Awards on Sunday.

The title of Young Citizen of the Year was the first award presented at this year's Australia Day celebration on the Derwent Esplanade in New Norfolk.

The recipient, New Norfolk High School student Kady Morgan, was described as a young person who dedicates her spare time to sporting pursuits, community, and advocacy for life in New Norfolk.

Kady has won awards in horseriding at the state level and has also been a Tasmanian representative in cheerleading. She has been a member of the New Norfolk Junior Football Club since seven years of age, when being a female player was still regarded as unusual.

She captained New Norfolk's Under-15 girls football team and last year became the first female to play 100 games in New Norfolk colours. This year she has set herself the goal of encouraging more girls to play AFL and to develop her coaching skills so she can one day coach a New Norfolk team.

The award for Derwent Valley Sportsperson of the Year went to Anna Blackwell, who last year completed Year 12 at St Mary's College while excelling in the sport of racewalking.

She has won two national medals and was a gold medallist at the 2019 Oceania Area Athletics Championships in Townsville, where she represented Australia.

Anna has been awarded a Tasmanian Institute of Sport scholarship for this year to assist her to further develop her athletics career. She is described as a committed athlete who holds herself to high standards.

Anna gives back to her sporting community by mentoring and officiating at Little Athletics. Her Australia Day Award was accepted by her mother, Joanne Blackwell.

Thursday-Friday total fire ban

THE Derwent Valley is expected to experience very high to severe fire danger ratings tomorrow and Friday, with a Total Fire Ban to be enforced across the state's south and two northern areas.

The Tasmania Fire Service urges Tasmanians to be prepared for challenging fire weather conditions towards the end of the week as hot temperatures, north-westerly winds and low humidity are expected to push the fire danger to severe in parts of the state.

The forecast has triggered a Total Fire Ban to be declared for 48 hours from 2am tomorrow (Thursday) until 2am on Saturday, for all municipalities in the south, as well as the Northern Midlands and Break O'Day municipalities in the north.

"As far as the fire danger goes, there is potential for Thursday and Friday to be challenging across large parts of the state," TFS acting regional chief Dale Rayner said. "Fire danger ratings ranging from very high to severe are expected to be widespread across the Midlands, Upper Derwent Valley, East Coast and South East.

"It's crucial that people adhere to the Total Fire Ban and also act responsibly in the lead up to Thursday by not lighting fires. Fires that start under these conditions will be very difficult for firefighters to control. Even though much of the State has had some rainfall recently, this has not been enough to improve the conditions, and the fuels are still very dry and will burn easily," Mr Rayner said.

A Total Fire Ban means no fires can be lit in the open including campfires, fire pots, incinerators, burn offs and solid-fuelled barbecues. The declaration applies to the following municipalities: Bighton, Central Highlands, Clarence, Derwent Valley, Glamorgan-Spring Bay, Glenorchy, Hobart, Huon Valley, Kingborough, Sorell, Southern Midlands, Tasman, Break O'Day and Northern Midlands.

2020 Australia Day fun run results

JUST over 200 entrants contested the two events in the Derwent Valley Australia Day Fun Run and Walk at the Derwent Esplanade in New Norfolk yesterday morning.

The 10km and 5km events were conducted by the Tasmanian Road Runners for the fourth year. Forty-two athletes contested the 10km event and a further 160 took part in the 5km run and walk.

Nick Earle and Anita McGinnis were the winners of the 10km run and Damon Court and Tania Rowlands finished first in the 5km event.

The day kicked off with 200 participants starting the annual Derwent Valley Australia Day Fun Run and Walk at 10am.

Also at 10am, four rafts set off from the New Norfolk Bridge in the third annual unofficial raft race to the Black Jetty.

Musical entertainment was provided by the Community Winds section of the Derwent Valley Concert Band, along with local group The Sign (Jo and Paul Volta) also performing some old favourites in two sets.

Food and drink vans did a good trade and the Lions Club barbecue was kept busy. Fun and games for children was provided by the Derwent Valley Youth Future Action Team (D'FAT), the Salvation Army and the Police and Ccommunity Youth Club (PCYC).

Australia Day Ambassador Rosie Martin spoke of the significance of Australia Day to her, while noting that it is not regarded as a day of celebration by everyone. Victor Kaiser of the New Norfolk RSL Club performed the flag raising and soloist Nic Courto from the Derwent Valley Concert Band sang the National Anthem.

Mayor Ben Shaw announced the local Australia Day Awards as follows:

• Senior Citizen of the Year: John Geraghty
• Community Event of the Year: 2019 Relay for Life
• Sportsperson of the Year: Anna Blackwell

The event concluded after the staging of the Colour Run which was introduced three years ago at the suggestion of Derwent Valley Council general manager Greg Winton. This event sees participants showered with colored powder (made of food-grade corn starch and dyes) at stations along the run.

Australia Day honour for Dick Warner

FORMER New Norfolk man Richard Warner has been made a Member of the Order of Australia in today's Australia Day Honours List.

Mr Warner lived his whole life at the family's Valleyfield property at New Norfolk until his wife, Professor Kate Warner, was appointed Governor of Tasmania in 2014 and the couple moved to Government House in Hobart.

WHAT TO DO FOR AUSTRALIA DAY TODAY

Mr Warner has been awarded the AM in recognition of his significant service to agricultural research and development.

Among his many achievements in this field, in 1999 he was a awarded a Churchill Fellowship to investigate employment creation programs for implementation in rural areas, studying developments in Ireland, the United Kingdom, Germany and Belgium.

Until relinquishing his commercial activities in order to support his wife in her Vice Regal role, Mr Warner's career had been as a farmer and director of a number of agricultural companies. His current roles include chairing The Crawford Fund's Tasmania State Committee and the Tasmanian Agriskills Reference Panel, and serving with Education Ambassadors Tasmania.

Mr Warner previously held a number of chairmanships, with Houston's Farm from 2002-14, Glenora Raspberries from 2005-14, Tasmanian Grain Elevators Board from 1995-2003 and the Egg Marketing Board of Tasmania from 1994-2002.

From 1998-2003 he was an advisory panel member of the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation's Asian Food Program, and in 1999-2000 he was an honorary research fellow with the School of Agricultural Science at the University of Tasmania.

His voluntary work in the Derwent Valley included serving as the founding chairman of the Derwent Valley Economic Renewal Group and being a director at Corumbene Nursing Home.

Mr Warner's late father Jim was awarded an MBE in the 1984 Queen's Birthday Honours, for his service as chairman of the Royal Derwent Hospital Board, and his late uncle Denis Warner received the OBE in the New Year Honours of 1971, for services to journalism.

Her Excellency, Professor Warner, was elevated to Companion of the Order of Australia in the 2017 Australia Day Honours, for eminent service to the people of Tasmania through leading contributions to the legal community, particularly to law reform, to higher education as an academic, researcher and publisher, and as a supporter of the arts, and environmental and social justice initiatives. She had been made a Member of the Order of Australia three years earlier.

Meet this year's Australia Day Ambassador

FORMER Tasmanian Australian of the Year Rosalie Martin has been named as this year's Australia Day Ambassador for the Derwent Valley.

The speech pathologist, criminologist and facilitator will be the guest speaker at tomorrow's Australia Day event at the New Norfolk Esplanade.

In 2013 Mrs Martin founded Chatter Matters Tasmania, to bring literacy and parent-child attachment programs to Risdon Prison. This work led to her being named the Tasmanian Australian of the Year in 2017.

WHAT TO DO ON AUSTRALIA DAY TOMORROW

The Australia Day Ambassador program sends high-achieving Australians to more than 300 community celebrations nationwide. Ambassadors include past recipients of Australian of the Year Awards, sportspeople, scientists, businesspeople, actors and community workers who provide inspiration and pride to Australia Day events and activities. Several of the ambassadors are Derwent Valley people, including Dana Faletic, Sally Wise and Diana Butler.

The Derwent Valley Council encourages participation at its main Australia Day event on the Eplanade tomorrow from 10am. Activities include free family fun, live music, a free sausage sizzle, face painting and more. The event will kick off with the Derwent Valley Fun Run and Walk and will conclude with the third annual Colour Run will be held. Official proceedings start at noon, followed by the presentation of the 2020 Australia Day Awards.

The Maydena community will stage its traditional Australia Day walk to Junee Cave and back, starting from the local playground at 10am, followed by a barbecue lunch, as well as fun and games for all ages.

The New Norfolk and Bushy Park swimming pools will once again offer free entry, a sausage sizzle and Australia Day fun and games, from 10am.

Rundown for Australia Day this Sunday

THE local Australia Day observance in New Norfolk will be held on the Derwent Esplanade this Sunday, January 26, with free activities and entertainment for all ages. Events will also be held at Bushy Park and Maydena.

The day kicks off at each location at 10am. At the Esplanade, this will be the starting time for the Tasmanian Roadrunners' Derwent Valley Fun Run and Walk.  The categories and 5km walk/run and 10km run. Entries will be accepted on the day.

The rest of the Esplanade program includes music by the Derwent Valley Concert Band and the long-established local group The Sign, as well as the flag raising, announcements of Australia Day award recipients and an address by the Australia Day Ambassador, Rosalie Martin.

The New Norfolk Lions Club will host a free Australia Day barbecue, including a vegetarian option for the first time. Free children's activities will be provided by the Derwent Valley Youth Future Action Team (D'FAT), the Salvation Army and the Derwent Valley PCYC. Facepainting will be available from the Hedgehog Fairy and the Guardian Pharmacy will provide free water and sunscreen. Food and drink vans will be on site. First aid support will be provided by local members of St John Ambulance.

FIRST GRADE: Chasing 177 for victory, New Norfolk I brought up its seventh win of the 50-over season, downing St Anne's by two wickets. Winning the toss and sending the visitors in, the Red Caps bowled out the Crows for 176 from 49.5 overs. In reply, the home side lost eight wickets, getting the 177 from 40.5 overs. At first drop, captain Matthew Bowden put together a well-made 73 from 110 deliveries, which included seven fours and two sixes. Bowden was the mainstay during his team's run chase, sharing a 69-run stand with Cody Neads who made a good 39 from 31 (seven fours). Bowden then put on a further 53 with Jason Rigby 23 from 33 (three 4s). Jordan Banks-Smith made 18 and earlier with the ball he was the main wicket-taker with 3-43 from 10 overs, while Jason Rigby got 2-32 (10).

SECOND GRADE: Gretna I got back into the top four, when it easily defeated MacKillop by the big margin of 107 runs at North Warrane. Winning the toss and batting, the visitors brought up their second win in as many matches making 7/221 from their allotted 50 overs. The competitive score was again brought about with a captain's knock from opener Ben Rainbird who made 66 from 79 deliveries. Rainbird hit seven fours during his stay at the crease and from his seven innings in Second Grade has scored 365 runs for an average of 73.00. Down the order at number seven, allrounder Aaron Maddox put together a fine 51 not out from 55 with five 4s. Maddox put on 81 with number six Jackson Ackerly who made 44 from 57. Ackerly hit five 4s and 6 in his valuable knock. Craig Cunningham made 19 from 21 and Jamie Duggan 18. In reply, the home team was bowled out for 114 off 40.2 overs. Of the Gretna bowlers, it was spin twins Craig Cunningham who captured 3-16 from his 10 overs and Rhys Browning who from just 4.2 overs, finished with the excellent figures of 3-3 in a great spell with the ball. Aaron Maddox took 2-23 (10) and Jamie Duggan 1-6 (2).

In low-scoring match at Richmond, Molesworth I went down to Richmond/Cambridge by three wickets. After being sent into bat and making 10/89 off 27 overs, the home side made hard work of it for the win, finishing 7/93 off 3.1 overs. Opener Jeremy Nichols did his best to keep his team in it taking 3-21 (10). Daniel Coppleman took 2-44 (20) and Brad Coppleman 1-13 (6). Earlier with the bat, opener Josh Ransley made 20 (30) with two 4s. Josh Nichols at number eight made 19 (two 4s) while the opener, Daniel Coppleman, made 14.

In the match between New Norfolk II and St Anne's at Cadbury Oval No.1, the Red Caps took the points as the Crows forfeited.

FOURTH GRADE: Continuing on with its winning run, Bothwell I brought up their its straight victory in accounting for Sandford at Cambridge Oval by four wickets. Batting first, the Demons posted 9/133 from their 50 overs. In reply, the Bucks got the job done finishing 6/134 off 30.1 overs. Batting at number eight, captain Cody Eyles made 36 from 43 balls with four 4s. Josh Eyles made 23 as did Nathan Eyles while Mark Pearce got 14. With the ball, Matthew Eyles in a tight spell picked up 2-22 (10). Opener Nathan Eyles took 2-22 (8), while Brock Nichols who now has 21 50-over wickets, finished with 2-26 from 9, and Mark Pearce got 2-28 (10).

FIFTH GRADE: Gretna II made it two wins in as many weeks, when its easily defeated New Norfolk III by eight wickets at Tynwald Park on Sunday. Winning the toss and batting, New Norfolk was bundled out for 73 off 17.1 overs. The main destroyer was Corey Ransley who sent down 8.1 overs in a great spell taking 6-29. Opener Adam Browning snared 3-24 off 5 overs. Bailey Wheeler 1-17 (4). Richard Graham top-scored with 31 from 22 hitting four 4 and one 6. Aaron Triffitt made 13 (17). In reply, Gretna got the runs finishing 2/75 off 18.1 overs. Opener Zac Crosswell remained 35no off 48, hitting six 4s. Corey Ransley made it a good day making 25 off 39 with two 4s and one 6. Tom Allcock remained 12no with two 4s. With the ball for the Red Caps, David Mitchelmore took 2-11 (4). Congratulations to Nathan Rice and Richard Graham who both played their 100th match for New Norfolk.

SEVENTH GRADE: Molesworth II made it back-to-back wins with a 46-run victory over Montagu Bay at Boyer Oval on Sunday. Winning the toss and batting, Molesworth made the modest total of 10/160 off 35.1 overs. Captain Jack Evans belted a top score of 65 from just 45 deliveries. Evans hit seven 4s and three 6s in what was a great innings for his team. Shayne Upton gave good support with 29 with four 4s and Brayden Hodge made 15 from 12 with one 4 and one 6. In reply, the visitors were bowled out for 114 off 30 overs. Shayne Upton made it a good day removing three of the top five batsmen, finishing with 3-31 (8). Aaron Newbon also did well taking 3-17 off 4 and Jack Evans continued his leadership taking 2-20 (6).

In the other match at Bothwell, the home side went down to Campania in a close one by just two wickets. Batting first, the Bucks made 10/143 off 34.5 overs. In reply, Campania needing six to win off the last over hit a six from the second ball, finishing 8/144 off 39.2 overs. Top-scoring for the Bucks was Nathan White who made a good 43 from 40 with two 4s and one 6. Openers Ashley Browning made 27 with one 4 and Adam Clark 20 from 31 with two 4s. With the ball, young Blake Eyles did an excellent job removing the top five batsmen taking and 5-32 from eight overs. Nathan White took 1-24 (8) three maidens and Ashley Browning 1-22 (4.2).
