Firearms incidents at New Norfolk

POLICE are investigating the theft of firearms and ammunition from a house at New Norfolk yesterday (Monday). A spokesman said police were called to a house in North Crescent at about 4.30pm after the owner had returned home to find the front door lock had been forced open.

The owner’s gun safe and a separate container containing ammunition had also been forced open. Missing are three double-barrel shotguns, three rifles and one single-barrel shotgun, plus a quantity of ammunition.

In another incident, police yesterday announced that they had charged a 58-year-old Derwent Valley man with multiple firearms offences following an unannounced inspection. A spokesman said it was alleged that six unregistered semi-automatic prohibited firearms and more than 90kg of reloading powder had been found.

The man was bailed and will appear in the Hobart Magistrates Court at a later date. His firearms dealers licence was suspended.
