Round 8
FIRST GRADE: With just 18 runs on the board and five batsmen back in the shed, New Norfolk I looked to be having a early day against Rokeby at Lindisfarne in their first match after the Christmas break last weekend. But Jason Rigby and Thomas Briscoe had other ideas when they began the rebuild, putting on a match-winning 105-run stand. The brave Briscoe made 62 off 87 deliveries, hitting two 4s and two 6s while Rigby was equally as good with 61 from 89 including four 4s and two 6s. After Rigby was out, Nathan Eiszele came to the crease and belted 48 from 35 deliveries (two 4s, one 61) and put on 46 with Briscoe. Eiszele continued on with young Blake Kemmler 17 (25) and the pair added a further 46. Amazingly, after the collapse, the Red Caps finished 8/228 from their 50 overs. In reply, Rokeby finished well shy on 9/134 from its 50 overs. The pick of the bowlers for New Norfolk was Seb Wishart who captured 3-15 from seven overs while Josh Rowlands picked up two of the top five batsmen, taking 2-31 (10). With this win, New Norfolk now sits equal on 40 points with ladder-leaders Wellington.
SECOND GRADE: A superb century from Molesworth captain Brad Coppleman and an excellent five-wicket haul by Brayden Hodge steered their team to its fifth win, defeating MacKillop by 71 runs. Coming in with the score on 3/53, Coppleman belted the ball to all parts of the North Warrane Oval, making a very entertaining 128 in 115 minutes from 89 deliveries. The talented cricketer hit 106 runs from boundaries, hitting 10 fours and 11 sixes, and put on a 95-run stand with Brayden Hodge who made 19. Openers Josh Ransley made 25 from 22 deliveries and Daniel Coppleman made 23 from 20. In reply, MacKillop was bowled out for 146 off 39.4 overs. This total was due to some very good bowling, in particular from Brayden Hodge who captured three of the top five batsmen and finished with career-best figures of 5-30 off his 10 overs. At one stage the club president was on a hat trick. Kye Tomkinson took 2-18 (5), Opener Jeremy Nichols was tight with 2-19 from 7.4 overs and Daniel Coppleman 1-28 (8). Molesworth now sit third on the ladder.
In the other Second Grade match, New Norfolk II kept itself on top of the ladder with a very good 10-run victory over Gretna I at Tynwald Park. The visitors won the toss and sent the Red Caps in to bat and after losing two wickets in succession with only four on the board, the team got back on track and made 8/211 from its 50 overs. Batting at number six, Richard Graham stepped up to make better than a run a ball with 73 from 72 deliveries. Graham belted 10 fours and two 6s as he and Stewart Rice, 31 from 46 (three 4s, one 6), put on a 60-run stand. Graham then put on 54 with Leigh Berry 26 (40, four 4s). Gretna spinner Craig Cunningham picked up 2-22 (10), while Trent Grant who at one stage was on a hat trick, took 2-27 (8). Ben Rainbird took 2-8 off 3 and opener Corey Ransley bowled well with 1-22 (10). Janie Duggan was 1-15 (2). In reply, Gretna gave it a great shake only to be bowled out just 10 runs short, finishing 10/201 off 49.1 overs. Opener and captain Ben Rainbird compiled a well-made 50 from 75 deliveries. Rainbird hit seven 4s and shared a 66-run stand with Rhys Browning who made 23. Mathew Burns put together a good 37 from 33 deliveries with two 4s and two 6s. At number eight, Marc Worldon hung around giving his side a chance making 38 from 52 hitting three 4s and one 6. Doing the same for New Norfolk was the run-maker Richard Graham who opened the bowling taking 3-27 from 9.1 overs to make it a good day. Stewart Rice took 2-47 (10), while Jamie Maddox 1-30 (10) and Nathan Rice 1-41 (9) did their bit to help secure the important win.
FOURTH GRADE: Bothwell I recorded its third straight win when it easily defeated Wellington at Eady St Oval by 133 runs. Winning the toss and batting, the Bucks made the good score of 10/244 off 48.4 overs. Early on they were in the back foot at 2/5 and then 4/53, but soon regrouped with a 81 run stand between Simon Eyles 47 from 61 hitting nine 4s and the ever-reliable Matthew Eyles 60 from 75 deliveries hitting a game high 12 fours. The pair got the total to 5/134. Captain Cody Eyles then kept things going with 23 from 17 balls (four 4s) and partner-in-crime Brock Nichols made 36 from 41 (five 4s). Earlier Adam Clark made 23 with four 4s and Nathan Eyles 17 with three 4s. In reply, Wellington was dismissed for 111 off 27 overs. Opening bowlers Brock Nichols 1-28 (6) and Cody Eyles 2-15 (6) captured early wickets. Veterans Matthew Eyles took 2-4 (2) and Joey Eyles 2-12 (2) chipped in with two each, while Mark Pearce did likewise with 2-28 (6). There was one run-out. Bothwell sits on top of the ladder on 36 points just ahead on percentage from St Virgil’s.
FIFTH GRADE: New Norfolk III went down tp Derwent by four wickets at Tynwald Park. Winning the toss and electing to bat, the Red Caps made 10/164 from 48.2 overs. Young Jordon Gittus played a valuable role making his highest senior score of 46 which included four 4s. Opener and captain Nathan Heron made 27 from 53 with four 4s while Coby Kemmler got 23 with two 4s. In reply, the visitors reached the target finishing 6/167 from 32.3 overs. David Mitchelmore was the main wicket-taker with 3-46 off 7.3 overs. Tejas Patel took 2-10 (4) and opener Bradley Chaplin got 1-30 (7).
In the other match, Gretna II went down to Sorell at Pembroke Park, Sorell by 55 runs. The home side won the toss and had first hit, making 10/228 from 44.2 overs. The best of the Gretna bowlers were Jake Campbell with 3/44 (7), Bailey Wheeler 2-39 (9.2) and Adam Browning 2-40 (10). In the run chase, Gretna started well with 43 on the board for the first wicket, but lost regular wickets to finish 8/173 from the 50 overs. Brian Smith at number nine top-scored with 30no from 67 deliveries with two fours, while Tom Allcock did equally well also making 30 with four 4s. Bailey Wheeler got 17 (one 4) and Josh Whitford 16.
SEVENTH GRADE: In the match between Molesworth II and the Knights at Boyer Oval, the Knights has first hit making 9/201 from their 40 overs. Ben Triffett was the main wicket-taker with 3-15 (5) and captain Jack Evans took 2-23 (8). In reply, Molesworth was 3/29 from 12 overs, no other details were available at the time of writing.
In the Seventh Grade match at Bothwell, Claremont forfeited to Bothwell.
T20 SUPER BASH: Congratulations to New Norfolk I on taking out the first grade T20 premiership defeating Old Beach by 33 runs at Cloak Oval, Old Beach. The Red Caps batting first made 6/142 from their 20 overs. In reply, they dismissed Old Beach to 10/109 from 19.1 overs. Man of the match, Stewart Rice top-scored with 34 from 26 balls and with the ball took 2-16 from four overs. Richard Graham made 29no from 19 and captured 2-33 (4) and Rohan Heron made 24 from 23. Jye Lester sent down 1.1 overs taking 2-4. In the semi-final when they secured a spot in the big one, it was a very close three-wicket win with Josh Walsh hitting the winning two runs off the second-last ball. Chasing 148 for victory, it was the big-hitting Stewart Rice that set the tone, clubbing 55 from just 20 deliveries. Rice went on a hitting spree, belting one 4 and amazingly eight 6s! Josh Walsh captured 3-25 off 4 overs to be the main wicket-taker.
