Councillor allowances updated

THE allowances paid to Tasmania's local government councillors had their yearly update on November 1. Each councillor is entitled to a fixed allowance plus additional allowances for mayors and deputy mayors, all based on the size of the council.

Following the annual adjustment where the allowances are adjusted against the Wage Price Index for Tasmania, each elected member of the Derwent Valley Council now receives $12,955 per year. The deputy mayor and mayor receive an additional $12,400 and $32,388 respectively.

Councillors around the state can also be reimbursed for telephone and internet use, travelling, and the care of any dependents while carrying out their duties. Derwent Valley councillors are also provided with tablet computers.

The Derwent Valley Council's 2018-19 annual report shows that just over $145,000 was paid in councillor allowances and expenses for that financial year. The list below crosses the period between the last council and the current body, with some of those named no longer being councillors.
