Mr Warner lived his whole life at the family's Valleyfield property at New Norfolk until his wife, Professor Kate Warner, was appointed Governor of Tasmania in 2014 and the couple moved to Government House in Hobart.

Mr Warner has been awarded the AM in recognition of his significant service to agricultural research and development.
Among his many achievements in this field, in 1999 he was a awarded a Churchill Fellowship to investigate employment creation programs for implementation in rural areas, studying developments in Ireland, the United Kingdom, Germany and Belgium.
Until relinquishing his commercial activities in order to support his wife in her Vice Regal role, Mr Warner's career had been as a farmer and director of a number of agricultural companies. His current roles include chairing The Crawford Fund's Tasmania State Committee and the Tasmanian Agriskills Reference Panel, and serving with Education Ambassadors Tasmania.
Mr Warner previously held a number of chairmanships, with Houston's Farm from 2002-14, Glenora Raspberries from 2005-14, Tasmanian Grain Elevators Board from 1995-2003 and the Egg Marketing Board of Tasmania from 1994-2002.
His voluntary work in the Derwent Valley included serving as the founding chairman of the Derwent Valley Economic Renewal Group and being a director at Corumbene Nursing Home.
Mr Warner's late father Jim was awarded an MBE in the 1984 Queen's Birthday Honours, for his service as chairman of the Royal Derwent Hospital Board, and his late uncle Denis Warner received the OBE in the New Year Honours of 1971, for services to journalism.
Her Excellency, Professor Warner, was elevated to Companion of the Order of Australia in the 2017 Australia Day Honours, for eminent service to the people of Tasmania through leading contributions to the legal community, particularly to law reform, to higher education as an academic, researcher and publisher, and as a supporter of the arts, and environmental and social justice initiatives. She had been made a Member of the Order of Australia three years earlier.
