FUN RUN RESULTS
The day kicked off with 200 participants starting the annual Derwent Valley Australia Day Fun Run and Walk at 10am.
Also at 10am, four rafts set off from the New Norfolk Bridge in the third annual unofficial raft race to the Black Jetty.
Musical entertainment was provided by the Community Winds section of the Derwent Valley Concert Band, along with local group The Sign (Jo and Paul Volta) also performing some old favourites in two sets.
Food and drink vans did a good trade and the Lions Club barbecue was kept busy. Fun and games for children was provided by the Derwent Valley Youth Future Action Team (D'FAT), the Salvation Army and the Police and Ccommunity Youth Club (PCYC).
Australia Day Ambassador Rosie Martin spoke of the significance of Australia Day to her, while noting that it is not regarded as a day of celebration by everyone. Victor Kaiser of the New Norfolk RSL Club performed the flag raising and soloist Nic Courto from the Derwent Valley Concert Band sang the National Anthem.
Mayor Ben Shaw announced the local Australia Day Awards as follows:
- Young Citizen of the Year: Kady Morgan
- Citizens of the Year: Craig Youd and Justin Derksen
- Senior Citizen of the Year: John Geraghty
- Community Event of the Year: 2019 Relay for Life
- Sportsperson of the Year: Anna Blackwell
