IT was runs, runs, runs aplenty and some, in a weekend of cricket dominated by the bat. There were two blistering captain's centuries, a 200-run opening partnership, an excellent captain's all-round performance and some very big team totals scored.
FIRST GRADE: In a match that saw 628 runs scored, New Norfolk I nearly pulled off a win for the ages. Winning the toss and sending Old Beach into to bat, the home side racked up the very big total of 8/320 from its 50 overs. Opener and captain Rhett Lockyear belted the huge score of 195 from just 132 balls (15 4s, 13 6s). In reply, the Red Caps gave the huge run chase a big shake, only to fall just 12 runs shy, finishing 8/308 from their 50 overs. Jordan Banks-Smith top-scored with a well-put-together 88 (five 4s, three 6s). Openers Seb Wishart (86 including six 4s) and Aaron Drew (65 including eight 4s and three 6s) kept things going, while Nathan Eiszele was there at the end on 27 not out, hitting three 4s and a 6. Earlier with the ball, Seb Wishart had a good contribution in the match taking 3-49 (8). While Jordan Banks-Smith did likewise taking 2-44 (10).
SECOND GRADE: A sensational 203-run stand from New Norfolk II openers Jake King and Rohan Heron guided their team to a massive 10-wicket win over Derwent on Saturday. Chasing 203 for victory, the run machines wasted no time on the Tynwald ground, reaching the target off just 31.2 overs. Captain Jake King led from the front with an excellent century, finishing 118no from 102 deliveries. He hit 84 runs in boundaries (15 4s and four 6s) in a real captain's knock. At the other end, like his captain, Heron wasted no time making 84no from 86 balls. Paddles, as his team-mates like to call him, struck seven 4s and three 6s during the unbeaten partnership, which was the team's sixth win and sees them remain on the very top of the ladder. Earlier, Derwent had faced out its 50 overs finishing 8/202. With the ball for the Red Caps, Richard Graham was the main wicket-taker with 2-41 from 10 overs, while Jamie Hill - who I'm told, took one of the greatest catches seen in quite some time last week - finished with the tidy figures of 1-16 (6).
Gretna I kept itself in touch with the top four, recording an important six-wicket win over the Knights at Collinsvale. Chasing 196 for victory, the in-form Gretna captain Ben Rainbird guided his team to victory with a superb run-a-ball century of 104no. Rainbird has been in great form since the break, making a half-century last week. He hit 14 4s and a 6 in the most recent game, with his last 4 bringing up the winning runs. Batting through the whole innings, the opener shared a third wicket stand of 121 with long-time mate Mathew Burns, who like his captain wasted no deliveries with a run per ball to finish on 65. Burns found the boundary regularly, hitting nine 4s and three 6s. Gretna finished 4/198 off 38.1 overs. Earlier, the home side made 9/195 off its 50 overs. With the ball for Gretna, Jackson Ackerly took 3-46 from seven overs while Mathew Burns finished with 2-27 from his 10. Opener Corey Ransley was tight with 1-20 (10) with four maidens, as was spinner Craig Cunningham with 1-20 (8).
Molesworth I recorded its sixth win of the 50-over roster when it thrashed the winless St Anne's at Boyer Oval by 166 runs. Winning the toss and batting, Molesworth gave an even batting display. Brayden Hodge, who has played some great cricket of late, made 56 from 49 deliveries, hitting five 4s and two 6s. Coming off his century from last week, Brad Coppleman hit a quickfire 47 from only 28 balls with five 4s and three3 6s, and Sam Triffitt made 46 from 64 with six 4s. The pair put on 73 for the third wicket. Nick Piuselli did well making 43 (54) including five 4s and a 6. Daniel Coppleman made 31 with three 4s and Larry Menzie 27 from 25. The home side made the good score of 8/292 from its fifty overs. In the run chase, the Crows fell well short and finished 8/126 off 34.2 overs and two batsmen did not bat. After his five wickets last week, Brayden Hodge was best of the bowlers with 2-21 off nine overs and a runout, while Larry Menzie took 2-17 (4.2) and Brad Ransley took 2-31 (5).
FOURTH GRADE: A top score of 77 with the bat and four wickets with the ball from Bothwell I captain Cody Eyles and 73 each from Josh Eyles and Mathew Eyles helped guide their team to a big 178-run victory over the Knights on Saturday at Bothwell. Winning the toss and batting, after being 5/84 at one point, the Bucks then piled on the runs and finished with the great total of 7/299 from their 50 overs. Coming in at number three, young Josh Eyles, who now has 321 runs with an average of 80.25 from six matches, hit seven 4s and four 6s during his 73 from 53 balls. In a valuable and patient innings, Mathew Eyles remained 73no with eight 4 and shared the big partnership of 152 with Cody Eyles who belted 77 from just 59, smacking four 4s and five 6s. In reply, the Knights were bundled out for 121 off 32.4 overs. Of the home side bowlers it was Cody Eyles who captured four of the top seven batsmen, finishing with 4-36 off his 10 overs. He also helped himself to three catches. Mark Pearce snared 2-25 from 10 overs as did Brock Nichols from 6.4 overs. Bothwell has now won four on the trot and remains on top of the ladder.
FIFTH GRADE: Playing at home, Gretna II got back on the winners list in a big way when it toppled ladder-leaders Rokeby by five wickets. Winning the toss and electing to bat, the visitors playing one short were dismissed for the low total of 98 off 22.5 overs. Captain Ross Langford led the charge with 2-26 off 6.5 overs. Opening bowler Adam Browning removed both openers, finishing with nice figures of 2-13 from five overs, while Zac Crosswell 2-23 (5) and Josh Whitford 2-35 (6) also did well. In reply, Gretna chased down the small target from 24.3 overs, finishing 5/102. Openers Zac Crosswell (who made a half century of 57 from 71 deliveries including (four 4s and three 6s) and Adam Browning (17 including one 4) got the team of to a good start, putting on 67, while Ross Langford made 13. Congratulations to Jake Campbell who played his 50th club game for Gretna.
In the other Fifth Grade match, New Norfolk III went down to Lindisfarne by 44 runs at Lindisfarne. Winning the toss and batting, the home side made 10/202 from its 50 overs. Bradley Chaplin, who now has eight wickets in just his third match, took 4-25 (10) in a great spell. Young Jordon Gittus, who continues to impress, captured his best figures for the season and finished with great figures of 2-17 from his 10 overs with three maidens.
SEVENTH GRADE: Molesworth II recorded its fifth win when it defeated Old Beach by 98 runs at Cloak Oval, Old Beach. Batting first, Molesworth made 6/201 from its 50 overs and in reply Old Beach was bowled out, finishing 10/105 in the 29th over. Nick Wakefield stepped things up a notch or two, making an excellent 72 and Ben Triffett joined in, just missing out on a half-century with a well-made 49no, while Nathan Wakefield made a handy 24. With the ball, Ben Triffett made it a great day bagging 3-32 off six overs, while Nathan Triffitt did a Richie Benaud taking 2-2 off 2. Jeremy Nichols chimed in with 2-34 off 7.5.
Playing at Collinsvale, Bothwell II went down to the Knights by 117 runs. The home side won the toss, elected to bat, and made the big score of 3/282 from its allotted 40 overs. Best of the Bucks wicket-takers was captain Peter Hansch with 1-45 (9). In reply, Bothwell finished 9/165 from 26 overs (one batsman did not bat). Opener Nathan White made good 43 from 37 deliveries, hitting most of his runs in boundaries with seven 4s and a 6. White shared a 64-run stand with young wicket-keeper Dylan Branch who is improving all the time and made a quickfire 35 from 21 balls, hitting four 4s and two 6s. The other opener, Ashley Browning, made a run per ball 17 with three 4s.
