Local teams in big bash cricket

TWO Derwent Valley cricket clubs have entered teams in the tier two Twenty20 Super Bash series starting this Tuesday, February 5. Both teams will play at Pontville, with Gretna playing Campania at 5.30pm and New Norfolk playing Dynnyrne at 8pm.

GRETNA I made it three wins in a row with an eight wicket win over Derwent at New Town last weekend. Derwent won the toss and elected to bat but just couldn't handle the Gretna bowling and was bundled out for just 96. Vice captain Corey Ransley bowled superbly taking 4 for 18 off his 10 overs to put the Derwent batting line up into disarray. Craig Cunningham continues to bowl with elegance, taking another three wickets in what was his 100th match for Gretna I. Bruce Emery also had fine figures, finishing with 1 for 13 off 10. In reply Gretna had little trouble chasing down the small target, losing just the two wickets with keeper/batsman Glenn Blackwell making 40 not out and Mathew Burns who is swinging the willow nicely this season remained 37 not out.

Defending a total of just 158 runs, Bushy Park with some excellent bowling rolled the second-placed MacKillop Beltas by 56 runs. Dylan Grant 5 for 25 and Troy Smith 4 for 23 skittled the Beltas for just 102 to put Bushy right back in the finals race. Grant and Smith bowled extremely well against one of the top teams in 4th Grade and must take much of the credit for the win. Opening batsman Geoff Crosswell hit a well made 55, next was Damien Madden who made 28 while captain Shaun Fenton made 21 and Dylan Grant 13. This weekend Bushy will host Hobart with the winner taking outright third spot. This match is an all-important one as from third to sixth spot on the ladder all teams are on 48 points.

In a reduced overs match New Norfolk I got back on the winners list with a 96-run victory over Sandford at Sandford. All-rounder Ashley Morgan batted well making 71 while the hard-hitting Jake King just missed out on a half century, making 49. Stewart Rice has had a superb season thus far and again got amongst the runs making 40. The Red Caps reached 6 for 205 off 35 overs. In reply Sandford could only manage 109 off their 35 for the loss of eight wickets. This was due to the very tidy bowling by all the New Norfolk bowlers, with the in-form Josh Walsh leading the charge with 3 for 34, after taking 5 for 32 for New Norfolk II the day before.

New Norfolk II haven't lost a match since round eight and recorded a 61-run win over the Montagu Bay Sharks at Geilston Bay last weekend. The Sharks won the toss and sent the Red Caps into bat making 10 for 186. Openers Richard Munnings 63 and captain Stephen Nichols 30 batting well sharing an 82-run partnership. Josh Dykes made 25 while youngster Mitch Rice made 20 before being run out. In reply the Sharks never really got going and were dismissed for 125 in the 36th over. This was due to the terrific bowling by Josh Walsh 5 for 32 off 10 and new player Brad Kemmler 4 for 22 off 10. With four rounds remaining New Norfolk II looks set to play a big part come finals time which must have their captain smiling from ear to ear!

Gretna II can't seem to find that winning feeling they had at the start of the season and went down to St Aidans at Gretna by 30 runs. Having first hit, St Aidans got off to a great start and at one stage were 4 for 120. From here the Gretna bowlers got on top with Rhys Browning keeping his team in the match and finishing with the impressive figures of 6 for 40 off 10. Browning was well supported by the experienced Joey Eyles who took 3 for 34. In reply Gretna reached 10 for 132 with young Cody Eyles top scoring with a fine 29 in the lower order. His father Joey Eyles made 16 as did Jordan Hastie and the man with the bag of wickets, Rhys Browning, made 13.

The 2nd Grade match between Molesworth I and Runnymede at Runnymede was washed out while in 5th Grade Molesworth II lost to Wellington on forfeit.

Early settlers honoured

THE first three families were added to New Norfolk's new Tribute Wall on Saturday afternoon. The Australia Day event was attended by the Federal Member for Lyons, Dick Adams MHR, representing the Federal Government.

Project manager Ngaire Glover said the Tribute Wall had been proposed by Dorothy Robinson some years ago, but it had taken quite a while for the idea to gain traction. Mrs Glover revived the idea when the Derwent Valley Council asked the community for proposals for funding under the Federal Government's Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Project. Mrs Robinson and Mrs Glover put a formal grant application proposal to the council and the $11,000 project was approved by the Federal Government in 2011.

Mrs Glover thanked designer Jeff Viney, Ray and Adam Williams from New Norfolk Timber, and Derwent Valley Council staff John Bradley, Allison Wilton, Debbie Hutchinson and Phil Green for their assistance in seeing the project through to completion.

The wall has been built on the southern edge of Arthur Square, opposite the Star and Garter Hotel. There are 104 spaces the wall, reserved for the families of early settlers and pioneers. Plaques recording the names of the municipality's Australia Day Award recipients are to be installed on the other side of the wall.

Mr Adams said New Norfolk was a community that valued its history and it was fitting to have a way to recognise the many pioneering families still living in the area. Mr Adams said he looked forward to seeing more families added to the wall. "Researchers love walls like this," he said.

The first three plaques record the contributions of the Cawthorn, Laskey and Miller families. Descendants of the three families watched on Saturday as ribbons were cut by Dorothy Cawthorn, Barbara McMaster (nee Laskey) and Lexie Miller on behalf of their respective families. Among the other visitors were former Devonport mayor Mary Binks OAM (nee Laskey).

Descendants of pioneering families are invited to put their name forward to purchase a plaque to add to the wall. For more information contact Mrs Glover on 0419 337 608.

Australia Day fun run results

MORE than 200 people completed the 2km, 5km or 10km sections of the annual Australia Day fun run at New Norfolk on Saturday. Olympian Kylie Risk was the first woman across the line in the 5km despite stopping to render assistance to a fellow runner who fell on the track near the Tynwald cricket pitch.

Jessie Maguire shows 'em the money

THE $7000 New Norfolk Pacing Cup was won by the in-form four-year-old mare Jessie Maguire, driven by Craig Toulmin and trained by Rod Plunkett. The race was conducted over 2950 metres at Kensington Park on Saturday. Harnesslink.com has more:

Community service recognised

CERTIFICATES recognising the community service of a number of local residents were presented at the Derwent Valley Council's Australia Day celebration on Saturday. Mayor Martyn Evans announced the following awards for contribution to the Derwent Valley:

Doug McKenzie: A long-time volunteer at Westerway Primary School and member of the Derwent Valley Council Access Advisory Committee.

Elsie Rayner: Active member of the Can-Hope Cancer Support Group and its activities including Australia's Biggest Morning Tea, MyState Financial Christmas tree, Daffodil Day and Pink Ribbon Day.

Murray Glover: Retiring two-term president of the Derwent Valley Probus Club. Thirteen years service through the Apex Club and 13 years in Probus.

Roz Chapman: Manager and volunteer at community radio station Tyga FM, founder of the Derwent Valley Players and member of the New Norfolk Business Alliance.

Sharon Hutchison: Long-term community service through Derwent Valley Regional Arts, Derwent Valley Community Choir, Tyga FM, Derwent Valley Players and the Friends of Willow Court.

Nina Williams: Long-time volunteer at the Maydena Online Access Centre, participant in Clean-Up Austgralia Days and assistant co-ordinator of community craft groups.

Derwent Valley Autumn Festival: This event continues to grow, attracting more visitors to the Derwent Valley each year.

International winner at the speedway

REIGNING world and US V8 champion Jimmy Owens became the first international driver to win Tasmania’s longest speedway feature event, the Mountain Dew Ice Tasmanian Grand National, near New Norfolk, last night. Owens, from Newport, Tennessee, thrilled the large crowd at the local speedway with a hard-charging all-the-way win in the 50-lap final, driving a car prepared by former six-times Tasmanian champion David Nichols, of Launceston.

Former Hobart driver and three-times grand national winner Darren Kane, finished second ahead of defending champion Lachlan Onley, from NSW. The grand national also doubled as the final round of the National Super Sedan Series, with second place for the now-Brisbane-based Kane, good enough to wrap-up his third series victory.

Queensland’s Matt Pascoe needed to finish at least two places ahead of Kane to snatch the series win, but placed fifth in the final after a titanic struggle in the middle stages of the race with Kane, Onley and Queensland’s Wayne Randall, who eventually finished fourth. Onley started alongside two-times current US champion Owens on the front row, sticking with him for nine laps before making his move. Looming large on the outside of the American ace only seemed to spur him on and after fighting off the challenge, he opened up a two-second break on Onley.

Kane, who started from grid three, lost ground early in the race, which gave Pascoe a sniff of series victory, leading to the four-way battle Randall and Onley after he lost ground to Owens. On lap 27, Kane eventually broke free from the battle and advanced to second with a big outside passing move on Onley, with Randall bumping Pascoe back to fifth place, six laps later. Kane started to close the gap to Owens late in the race, only to see the world champion turn the wick up again in the dying laps, to record an impressive victory.

The win for Kane was a special one and also one which could have gotten away with the former four-times Tasmanian champion forced to change an engine on Sunday night, despite winning one of two mini-finals on Sunday night by a massive 12.7 seconds. “I brought the car out onto the track for hot-laps (practice) and it developed a miss in the engine,” Kane said.

“We decided not to risk it and change the engine, but I could see the series points going down the drain if we didn’t  do it right,” he said. “My crew was fantastic and they changed the engine in record time, which kept our series alive. It’s really special to be the first driver to win three series and to do it on my former home track is just the icing on the cake.”

Kane said he still had unfinished business at Latrobe this Friday and Saturday night in Australia’s richest super sedan event, the $46,000 Bendigo Bank Grand Prix. “That event’s been a hoodoo for me, but I’m determined to win it before I retire, even if I have to stay racing until I’m 90,” Kane said.

On the same program, Victorian teenager Dion Bellman won the Tasmanian Junior Sedan Championship with an all-the-way win from green light to chequered flag in the 20-lap final. Bellman, the reigning Victorian champion, who recently finished second in the Australian title, emulated his older brother Chris Bellman, who also won last year’s Tasmanian and Victorian championships.

Bellman was always the driver to beat after winning his heats convincingly, with former Tasmanian Brody Fraser-McGee, now from Queensland, joining him on the front row for the final. However, Fraser-McGee’s challenge was short-lived when the suspension on his Daihatsu Charade broke, with his sister Maddie McGee inheriting second place and maintaining station to the chequered flag. James Nolan finished third as the best of the resident Tasmanians after a race-long battle with Nathan Russell, Aiden Gilbert and Josh Stephens in a tight battle for the final podium spot.

Earlier in the night, Richmond’s Laura Davidson showed a clean pair of heels to the boys in two divisions of the Speedway Karts Mini-Grand National, winning both the modified clubman and 125cc finals. Devonport veteran Geoff Lawrence also finished second in both finals after a consistent weekend, with Deloraine’s Jamie Claridge third in the clubman final and Devonport’s Charlie Woolley collecting his first major podium in the 125cc final. Meanwhile, former Tasmanian and now Western Australian brothers Leigh and Carl Aylett dominated the junior final, with Leigh winning from reigning Tasmanian champion Carl and reversing last year’s result. Ulverstone youngster Ty Auton finished third.

Citizens of the Year

BARRY and Marlene Adlard were named the joint recipients of the Derwent Valley Council's Citizen of the Year Award at yesterday's Australia Day celebrations in New Norfolk. Both are life members of the New Norfolk Rowing Club and long-term members of the Lions Club.

Former New Norfolk High School student Caitlin Carnes was named the Young Citizen of the Year in recognition of her role in the organising of events including a business breakfast, careers day and ladies' lunch during 2012. Caitlin was the recipient of a number of prizes at the NNHS awards night last month and will be continuing to college this year.

New Norfolk High School's 2012 Rally of Respect was named the Community Event of the Year, with the award being accepted by principal Malcolm Elliott. The rally was attended by an estimated 1000 people including students of all Derwent Valley and Central Highlands schools.

Australia Day sports awards

Luke Gilbert

A YOUNG golfer and three Olympic rowers were recognised as the Derwent Valley's top sportsmen and women at yesterday's Australia Day Awards in New Norfolk.

For the second time in three years, Derwent Valley Mayor Martyn Evans named the New Norfolk Rowing Club's senior squad as our Sportsperson/Team of the Year. The squad - consisting of Kate Hornsey, Anthony Edwards and Kerry Hore - were selected for the 2012 London Olympic Games and all earned places in the finals of their respective events. Hornsey won a silver medal in the women's pair while Anthony and Kerry both finished fourth in their finals.

"Kate and Kerry are both life members of the New Norfolk Rowing Club while Anthony is additionally the state development officer for Rowing Tasmania," master of ceremonies Craig Farrell MLC said at yesterday's presentation. The award was accepted by New Norfolk Rowing Club patron John Shoobridge.

The title of Young Sportsperson of the Year went to Luke Gilbert, 16, of New Norfolk. The award was accepted by Luke's mum, Inge Gilbert, as he was at work in at the Tasmania Golf Club.

The dedicated young golfer has been playing competitively for about 4½ years. He practises most days and plays at the New Norfolk and Tasmania Golf Clubs. He has been in the state junior squad the last two years, travelling to New South Wales, Queensland and South Australia to compete against other golfers his age. He works at the Tasmania Golf Club Pro Shop on Saturday afternoons.

Meet the ambassador

Jane Clifton

ACTRESS Jane Clifton has been named as this year's Australia Day Ambassador for the Derwent Valley. Perhaps best known for her role in Prisoner from 1980-84 but the show business all-rounder is also a singer, writer and public speaker.

Ms Clifton has been an Australia Day Ambassador for more than five years, serving in places such as Melbourne, Nunawading and Koo Wee Rup in Victoria. This year she will attend the Derwent Valley Council's main Australia Day celebration at Tynwald Park, New Norfolk, including an Australia Day address at 12.30pm on January 26.

The Australia Day Ambassador Program sees high achieving and proud Australians attend local Australia Day celebrations in towns and cities across the nation. The program is sponsored by Woolworths and there will be a presentation from the New Norfolk store to Ms Clifton on Saturday.

Balmforth book goes down well

MANY happy memories were shared when local history fans flocked to the New Norfolk Newsagency just before Christmas for the launch of Steve Balmforth's book on Glenleith estate. Mr Balmforth said the December 22 book launch had gone very well, with more than 60 copies sold during the morning.

Mr Balmforth was thrilled with what he called an unexpected level of interest from locals and those who had links to the Glenleith property. The current owner of Glenleith, Peter Cooper, was among the interested onlookers at the book signing, as was Len Machin from New Norfolk (pictured with Steve Balmforth, left,) who is featured in the book as part of the 1954 Plenty football team, and has many personal memories of the stories as outlined in the book.

Photos appearing in Glenleith Memories and Stories will be provided to the New Norfolk Historical Information Centre. The book has 100 pages and includes chapters on families including the Balmforths, Harwoods, Shaws, Woolfords, Menzies, Rainbirds, McMahons among many others, as well as hop-picking, the Plenty Church, Plenty Hall, Plenty Football Club, local identities and family memories.


The book will continue to be sold via the New Norfolk Newsagency until stocks run out. "Leigh Martin and his staff have been exceptionally supportive of this local project," Mr Balmforth said. Round 13 results

BOTH Bushy Park and Gretna II suffered losses in round 13 of the Southern Cricket Association last weekend. Bushy went down to the Knights by 48 runs at Cosgrove High School. The Knights having first hit made 7 for 258, with Mitchell Crosswell picking up three wickets, Shaun Fenton 2 and Trent Grant 1. Bushy Park did well in the run chase but was eventually bowled out for 210 off 41.3 overs. The Bushy Park batsmen got started but just couldn't go on with it. Captain Fenton top-scored with 40 runs. Dylan Grant was the next best with 32 and Geoff Crosswell made 31.

Gretna II lost its fifth match in a row, going down to the Marquis Tigers by two wickets. Gretna made 10 for 124 off 41.4 overs, Adam Browning top scoring with 23 not out while opener Jordan Hastie made 22. The Tigers started well in the run chase and at one stage were 3 for 93, but then lost 5 for 21 to be eight wickets down and 10 runs needed. The Gretna bowlers tried desperately to snare the final two wickets, but it wasn't to be with the Tigers finishing 8 for 126 off 33 overs. Cameron Emery and Adam Browning finished with 2 wickets each while Cody Eyles took 1 for 6 off six overs and Todd Jarvis 1 for 27 off seven. Congratulations to Clinton Millhouse on playing his first game for Gretna.

In 5th Grade, Molesworth II playing with just the 10 players went down to the Montagu Bay Sharks by six wickets. Molesworth had first hit, making 73 off 28 overs. D. Smith top-scored with 13. Ricky Neads and Jye County made 11 each. The Sharks lost four wickets in the run chase  4 for 74 off 18 overs. Brad Kemmler took all 4 wickets with figures 4 for 42 off eight.

New Norfolk II had the bye.

In 2nd Grade, Gretna I all-rounder Mathew Burns smashed his second century for the season in his team's win over Runnymede at Gretna on Saturday. Burns hit 12 fours and 3 sixes in his 123 runs and shared a 49-run partnership with captain Ben Rainbird who made 68 and then shared a 104 run partnership with Glenn Blackwell who made 33. Burns has been in excellent form this season and if this continues Gretna will look to play a big part in the finals which are just around the corner. Gretna had first hit and posted the big total of 9 for 283 off their 50 overs. In reply Runnymede looked good early and at one stage were 4 for 166, but were eventually all out for 224 in the 40th over. Craig Cunningham continues to shine with the Kookaburra and picked up 3 for 31 off seven overs. Peter Jelkic took three wickets for 42 off seven.

Molesworth I smashed Bagdad at Boyer Oval, skittling them out for just 83 with Ricky Martin bowling extremely well with figures of 4 for 13 off 10 overs - six of these were maidens. M. Siely bowled well, collecting 2 for 20 off 10 overs, while Dean King finished with 1 for 11 off seven. In reply Molesworth lost just the two wickets chasing down the small total finishing 2 for 90 off 14 overs. Ricky Martin again led from the front, making 38 not out to be the best of the batsmen. His innings included 4 fours and 1 six. Brad Ransley and Brad Coppleman both made 14.

New Norfolk I went down to the Montagu Bay Sharks at Tynwald Park by 63 runs. The Sharks made 165 off 49.3 overs, Josh Dykes did very well taking 4 for 22 off eight overs as did Ashley Morgan taking 2 for 29 off 10. New Norfolk lost wickets regularly in the run chase and was bundled out for 102 with none of the Redbacks batsmen firing. Opener Rohan Heron top scored with 23.

Grand National weekend at the speedway

WORLD V8 speedway sedan champion and two-times US champion Jimmy Owens will headline a stellar line-up for this weekend’s Tasmanian Grand National at the Mountain Dew Ice Raceway near New Norfolk. The state’s longest-running speedway feature event, which started in 1971, will also double as the final round of the National Super Sedan Series this Saturday and Sunday nights, attracting the best drivers in the country, plus a talented contingent of Tasmanian competitors.

Owens, from Newport, Tennessee, is the reigning world dirt track sedan champion and also won the 2011 and 2012 US late model speedway sedan (the equivalent of Australian V8 super sedans) championship. The man known as “The O Show” and “The Newport Nighmare” will race a car prepared by six-times Tasmanian champion David Nichols, of Launceston. However, in what will be his first time racing in Australia, Owens won’t find it easy with the cream of the Aussie crop equal to the task of taking the world’s best.

Racing on Saturday night will include nine heats for the super sedans, plus two 20-lap finals, which will all carry over points to the second night of racing. Support racing on Saturday will include street stock sedans, wingless sprints, Formula 500s, bombers, sidecars and speedway karts, with racing for karts and sidecars from 4pm and the main program getting under way at 6pm.

Sunday night will include three more heats for super sedans, plus four four-lap pole dashes and a 50-lap grand final. The support program will include the Tasmanian Junior Sedan Championship, the postponed Bombers Cup final, street stock sedans, modified production sedans, and speedway karts.

Speedway karts will be competing over both nights for the Speedway Kart Mini-Grand National in three classes for modified clubman, juniors and 125cc karts, with racing also starting at 4pm for the karts, followed by the main program at 6pm.

While Owens will be the man to beat in the main event for V8 super sedans, the national series will still have to be decided, ensuring the locals will also be fighting amongst themselves. Former Hobart driver Darren Kane, now based in Brisbane, is currently leading the series and the former Australian and four-times Tasmanian champion would love to wrap it up on his former home track. Queensland’s Matt Pascoe, Kodee Brown (WA), Dave Gartner (SA), former three-times Australian champion Mick Nicola (VIC) and last year’s Tasmanian Grand National winner Lachlan Onley (NSW) are all within mathematical reach of the series lead, ensuring it will go down to the wire.

Reigning Australian champion Jarrod Harper, from Hellyer Beach, did not contest the national series, but will be keen to show his interstate rivals he is still one of the best in the country, while his son and current Tasmanian champion Callum Harper, will also make his presence felt. Defending national series champion Brad Smith, of Devonport, won’t take out back-to-back series crowns after striking engine dramas in South Australia, but he will be keen to bounce back and end the series on a high note in front of a Tasmanian crowd. Former Tasmanian champion Steve Latham also contested the national series this season and is currently in 10th place and hoping a strong performance on his home track this weekend will catapult him onto the top 10, to also finish his season on a high.

Juniors represent the south

FROM January 7-10, more than 100 of Tasmania's elite junior cricketers aged from 11-15 years played on the North-West Coast for Cricket Tasmania's Intrastate Cup. Of these fine young cricketers, five boys from the Derwent Valley and Central Highlands represented southern Tasmania.

These were Jack Stevenson and Ryan Banks-Smith in the Under 13s, Joshua Farrow in the Under 14s and Alex Blair and Jacksyn Mann in the Under 15s. The teams were Southern Storm, Northern Force and North-West Lightning.

Among the many highlights was the victory by the Southern Storm Under 15s to secure the title in the last match. Needing seven runs to win from the final over, the Storm scored the winning runs with just four balls to spare. Jacksyn Mann was at the crease and remained 18 not out off 32 balls. Earlier, wicket keeper Alex Blair took two great catches to also spear the Storm to victory. Alex did well with the gloves, taking a total of four catches and four stumpings over the four matches.

Other highlights included Ryan Banks-Smith's bowling figures in the Under 13s' fourth match, taking 4 for 10 off 5.1 overs and making 17 not out with the bat. Team-mate Jack Stevenson in their first match made 35 runs of 35 balls (three 4s and  two 6s) and then took 1-34 off eight overs and also took a catch. Josh Farrow made 39 runs off 53 balls in the Under 14s' fourth match and in the third match took 2 for 11 off three overs.

All five local boys did a fantastic job with their respective teams and should be congratulated for the way they represented not only the south of the state but also the Derwent Valley and Central Highlands.

Investment bonanza tipped

PROPERTY developer Tony Ellis says several major projects are poised to provide a massive boost to New Norfolk and the wider Derwent Valley. On ABC radio this morning, Mr Ellis spoke about:

• His own $11 million "Willow Residences" gated community proposal for three buildings adjacent to the Willow Court oval in New Norfolk and the re-building of Franklin House which was destroyed by fire in 2012
• A nearby "major supermarket" development on the Willow Court oval, which he estimated at $15 million
• An "independent supermarket" project on the adjacent Royal Derwent Hospital site, estimated by Mr Ellis at $15 million
• The $84 million conversion of one of Norkse Skog's paper machines at Boyer to produce magazine paper

Other developers are behind the two supermarket projects. Plans for these are on public display at the Derwent Valley Council Chambers.

Mr Ellis also owns a $3 million residential complex in the former Lachlan House building off Humphrey St on the Willow Court site. He described New Norfolk as an attractive proposition for developers due to low prices and a "progressive council". Mr Ellis also spoke in glowing terms of the work done by Haydn and Penny Pearce in the privately-owned section of Willow Court, as well as the recently established conservation committee headed by David Llewellyn.

NEW Norfolk I batsman David Maddox hit up a well-made century in his team's win against Richmond/Cambridge at Tynwald Park last Saturday. Maddox, who came in at first drop with the score on 96, batted right to the end of the 50 overs - finishing on 114 not out. After winning the toss the New Norfolk openers got on top early with Jake King making 65 and Rohan Heron 45, but it was Maddox who controlled the innings from here on in. Stewart Rice had a great game making 45 while Josh Rowlands remained 18 not out as New Norfolk finished 6 for 331 off 50 overs. In reply Richmond/Cambridge was never in the hunt and was bowled out for 111. After batting well Stewart Rice did like wise with the ball, picking up 4 for 23. Spinner Ashley Morgan took 3 for 23 while the old faithfull Graeme Rowlands picked up 2 for 22.

In other matches Gretna I had a 196 run win over eight-placed Bagdad at Bagdad. The home team won the toss and sent Gretna in to bat. Gretna was going along nicely at 4 for 138 but then found themselves at 7 for 154. Captain Ben Rainbird was the 7th wicket to fall and batted well making 69 with the team looking like making a small total. But from here the lower order batsmen rebuilt the innings with Aaron Maddox at number 10 made 88 smashing 6-4s and 7-6s, well-assisted by Tom Allcock batting at number eight and hitting up a well made 50 not out. Jackson Ackerly also did well making 25 in his 100th club game. Well done Jacko, let there be many more games ahead. Gretna finished 9 for 323 of 48 overs. After giving up the chance to keep Gretna to a score under 200 Bagdad never looked in the hunt and was bowled out for 127. Spinner Craig Cunningham bowled well, picking up 4 for 39 and unlucky not to get 5 with one catch being put down on the boundary. Corey Ransley also did well taking 3 for 29, while Mathew Burns and the run maker Aaron Maddox took one each.

In the match at Clarendon Vale, Molesworth I lost to Rokeby. Molesworth won the toss and had first hit making 10 for 177. Captain Ricky Martin top-scored with 53 which included 6-4s and 4-6s (not much running there. Young Brad Ransley is showing a lot of promise and made 33 with 7 well struck 4s. Nathan Eiszele chipped in with 26. Rokeby didn't muck around in the run chase, finishing 4 for 183 off just 23.2 overs. Ricky Martin doubled up, taking 2 for 35 to be the best Molesworth bowler, while M. Siely and Brad Coppleman got one each.

In 5th Grade, New Norfolk II made it a double for the club with a big eight-wicket win over Sorell at Sorell. The home team won the toss and had first hit, but it was just about all over before it started, as they were bowled out for just 63. The youngster who took 8 wickets in round 10 again dominated with the ball, skittling the Sorell top order taking 4 for 20 off 8 overs. You are in some fine form Walshy! Richard Munnings also did well with 2 for 11 while Jamie Hill and Mitchell Rice took 1 each. New Norfolk had little trouble in the run chase, losing just the two wickets to finish 2 for 71 off 12 overs. Opener Richard Munnings did very well and remained 52 not out.

On Sunday in 4th Grade, Gretna II had a 7 wicket loss to Derwent at New Town High School. Winning the toss and batting first, Gretna made the competitive total of 10 for 187. Captain Todd Jarvis held the innings together, top-scoring with 40. Openers Jordan Hastie made 27 and Nick Wakefield 17 while Brad Moles chipped in with 22 at number 10 and Cody Eyles made 11 not out. Derwent made the run chase look easy, losing just the 3 wickets to finish 3 for 189 off 38.1 overs. Joey Eyles bowled very well for Gretna to take all three wickets for 35 runs off 10 overs.
  
After winning the last seven matches, Bushy Park lost its first match since round three, going down to DOSA by 7 wickets at the Bushy Park Showgrounds on Sunday. Bushy won the toss and had first hit, but struggled to make a big score and was bowled out for 159. Geoff Crosswell played his part with a steady 57, while Nick Fenton tried hard making 24, Shaun Fenton did likewise, but was out for 15. Trent Grant was the other batsman with double figures, making 11. In the run chase, DOSA was in full control, losing just the three wickets finishing 3 for 160 off 29 overs. Dylan Grant snared two wickets while Troy "Wizard" Smith got the other.

Due to Risdon Vale pulling out of 5th Grade, Molesworth II had a bye.
 
I've seen and heard of some big scores made in cricket and on Sunday in 4th Grade was no exception. In the match between McRobies Gully and Marquis Tigers on the small Lansdowne ground in West Hobart, McRobies Gully made the massive total of 8 for 517 off their 50 overs (40 extras). Three batsmen scored centuries (134, 125 & 109). Thirty-nine 4s and forty 6s were belted to the boundary. In reply Marquis Tigers were bowled out for 164 off 24.4 overs. The small ground may have had a lot to do with the massive score, but as they say in cricket "you still have to get em" and McRobies Gully certainly did that!

Heritage house open this Sunday

Frescati house as it once was.

THERE will be an open day at historic Frescati House in New Norfolk this Sunday afternoon. The Friends of Frescati will welcome visitors to the house and surrounding gardens from 2-5pm, providing a rare opportunity to see inside the building.

The purpose of the day is to collect memories of the house and its surroundings. Any photos and memorabilia will be particularly welcome.

There has been a large bushfire at Dawson Road, LAKE REPULSE. The fire danger rating in this area still remains high, though moderate conditions prevail. Fire under these conditions can be difficult to control. The main area of this fire continues to burn in the Broad River area producing some smoke that may be visible to the communities of Ellendale, Karanja, Westerway, Hamilton, Ouse and Risbys Road.

Residents are reminded to remain vigilant and be prepared for any changes in fire activity. There is no immediate threat to communities. Parts of this bushfire are currently not controlled.

Reported Road Closures: Lake Repulse Road and Cluny Lagoon Road near Ouse are closed from the intersection with the Lyell Highway. Dunrobin Road Bridge over Sabbath Creek is closed. Dawsons Road, Meadowbank is open to residents only. Southern walking tracks and camping grounds remain closed. A 7 tonne load limit applies to the bridge on the Cluny Lagoon Road (over Cluny Lagoon and the Repulse Dam bridge.

What to do: Check your bushfire plan now; well constructed and prepared homes are defendable in these conditions. If you don't have a bushfire plan or your plan is to leave, consider leaving the affected area for a relative or friends place if conditions worsen, only if the path is clear. Unless you are a resident or have urgent business, consider avoiding travel in this area. Stay informed in case conditions change. Forestry Tasmania and Norske Skog crews are continuing to consolidate secondary containment lines, while aerial surveillance with infra red technology has been locating hot spots on the fires perimeter for ground crews to effectively blacken out.

Fire crews are continually patrolling and blacking out all fire edges. Members of the public in these areas will need to be cautious of falling trees and branches that may fall with little or no warning.

Warm to hot conditions will be experienced today, residents need to remain vigilant as conditions can change rapidly. Motorists need to drive with care. Clark family history

INFORMATION (photos, documents, family Bibles) is being sought on the families of William Clark of Mt Lloyd, near New Norfolk. William was born around 1813 and died at Dry Creek (Glenfern) in 1879. He had children with Ann Browning (nee Murrell). These were Elizabeth born 1843 (married name Boon), Sarah b. 1845 (m. Lewis), Charles b. 1848 and William b.1850. Some of these children went by the Clark surname others by Browning.

Ann Browning died in 1852 and William married an Irish girl by the name of Catherine Cantilen at Macquarie Plains in 1855. Children to this union (who survived birth) were Jane b. 1856 (m. Leeson), Thomas b. 1857, Susan b. 1860 (m. Butler), Catherine b. 1865 (m. Oakley), David Arthur b. 1867, Edward b. 1869 and George Henry b.1872.

Most of the children from both relationships stayed in the New Norfolk and Hamilton districts and have continuing links with the area to the present day.

William Clark's origins remain mysterious. He was always decribed as a "native of the colony" but extensive research has not solved his parentage. Anecdotal stories suggested he was a brother of James Peevor/Clark of "Rockmount", Ellendale and recent evidence suggests he was in some way related to him.

Ellendale residents warned

ELLENDALE residents have been told that the still uncontrolled Lake Repulse fire could intensify in tomorrow's predicted high temperatures. The forecast for Ouse, Bushy Park and New Norfolk is 31 degrees and a little light rain.

Yesterday's community meeting in the Ellendale Hall heard that the fire was still burning in the "worst possible terrain" for firefighting. The fire was allegedly started by an unattended campfire on January 3 and has burned out of control since then. Severe conditions in the extreme heat of January 4 saw many residents of the Ellendale and Westerway area evacuated to New Norfolk.

The latest information from the Tasmania Fire Service is that the main fire activity continues to be on the northern end of the western side, moving across the Broad River area. This location is very steep with rocky terrain and has proved to be very difficult for ground crews to access. Remote area teams from New Zealand and the Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service are continuing to work in that area.

Council meeting roster

THE Derwent Valley Council recently set its meeting schedule for 2013 and councillors have already attended several workshops in advance of the first monthly meeting of the year this Thursday at 6.30pm. The meeting will be held in the New Norfolk Courthouse and the agenda is available at the council office in Circle St, New Norfolk, and can be downloaded from the council website here.

Councillor workshops are generally held at 6.30pm on the first Thursday of the month, and the formal council meetings are held on the third Thursday. The next scheduled workshop will be held at the Courthouse, Circle St, New Norfolk on February 7 at 6.30pm. The public is invited to attend the first 30 minutes of each workshop.

Ellendale fire meeting today

RESIDENTS of the Ellendale area have been encouraged to attend a community meeting in the Ellendale Hall at 10am this morning (Tuesday). The Tasmania Fire Service, Local Government and Tasmania Police representatives will be on hand to provide details and answer questions about the current fire situation for residents of Ellendale and the surrounding area.

The Tasmania Fire Service says the main fire activity continues to be on the northern end of the western side, moving across the Broad River area. This area is very steep with rocky terrain and has proved difficult for ground crews to access.

Remote area teams from New Zealand and the Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service are continuing to work in that area. Forestry Tasmania and Norske Skog crews are continuing to consolidate secondary containment lines.

Members of the public in the area will need to be cautious of falling trees and branches that may fall with little or no warning. Funds for community shed

AN automotive repair program in New Norfolk was one of four community programs in Tasmania to share in more than $34,000 in Seeds of Renewal grants from the ANZ Bank last month. Funded by ANZ and independently administered by the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal (FRRR), Seeds of Renewal provides grants of up to $10,000 for education and employment programs in regional communities.

The Derwent Valley Community House was awarded $9705 towards its automotive repair program for 42 youths at the Community Shed at Carinya Education Park in Blair St, New Norfolk. At a presentation last month, the Community House received a cheque and a commemorative plaque.

"This year a big part of our focus was on education and employment programs and we’re proud to be involved in establishing training programs for youth, as well as funding for employment programs, just to name a few," ANZ regional business banking executive Chris Sparks said.

Guardian challenge on again

LATE last year the New Norfolk Guardian Pharmacy offered a six week "Be Good To Yourself Challenge" to its customers. The challenge focused on losing weight, improving health markers and increasing fitness levels, all whilst being supported by pharmacy staff and the Be Good To Yourself program. Some 18 "Challengers" signed up in October, including our the pharmacy's wellness coach Nicole Lawrence undertook the challenge alongside customers.

"Each week for six weeks our Challengers came back for progress updates and support; all of the Challengers have improved aspects of their lifestyle, their eating habits and fitness, as well as gained confidence in their ability to make healthy changes," Nicole said. "The Be Good To Yourself Weight Management Program is a comprehensive meal replacement program that focuses on whole body wellness and our Wellness Coaches provide advice and motivation to help Challengers achieve and maintain their goals." At the end of the six weeks the group had lost a total of 62.6 kg, 104.5cm and a combined 96.4% body fat.

The next Be Good To Yourself Challenge kicks off this Tuesday, January 15 and runs for eight weeks. This New Year Challenge includes an option to participate in the New Norfolk Australia Day Fun Run or Walk and enter as a team with the pharmacy staff members and their families. Glenora's into cricket

MILO in2cricket was once again held at Glenora District High School, running for nine weeks up to the end of 2012. "There were 42 participants who turned up each week to enjoy a wonderful program," co-ordinator Annie McKenzie said. "It was great to see so many parents getting in and helping out."

The final session was held at the Gretna Recreation Ground, where a representative from Cricket Tasmania joined in the fun. A barbecue was provided by the Gretna Cricket Club, adding to the enriching experience of the last day.

On December 14 the group was lucky enough to attend the first test between Sri Lanka and Australia at Bellerive Oval.  Twenty-one of the group were selected to be part of the opening ceremony and all the students went on the ground to be part of the entertainment at lunch time. The highlight of the day was joining Ricky Ponting on his lap of honour around the ground.

On behalf of the Gretna Cricket Club and the Milo cricketers I would sincerely like to thank Annie Mckenzie for all her hard work in running the Milo in2cricket program, not only for this year but for the past three years. Annie's dedication towards the kids has been second to none and without her commitment the kids wouldn't have the opportunity to experience what cricket has to offer.

The Milo in2cricket program is a great introduction to cricket for kids aged five to 10 years. Having this program up and running has provided the Gretna Cricket Club with many new junior players into the Under 13s and then onto the Under 15s and in the future on to senior level. For this our club thanks you Annie for all you hard work. Also thank you to all parents and Gretna Cricket Club senior players that helped out over the nine weeks.

• A 7-tonne load limit applies to the bridge on the Cluny Lagoon Rd (over Cluny Lagoon) and the Repulse Dam bridge.

• If you don’t have a bushfire plan, or your plan is to leave, consider leaving the affected area for a relative or friends place if conditions worsen - only if the path is clear.

Community Information:

• The main fire activity continues to be on the northern end of the western side, moving across the Broad River area and remains uncontained. Remote area teams, Norske Skog and Forestry Tasmania continue to work in that area.
• Members of the public in these areas will need to be cautious of falling trees and branches that may fall with little or no warning.
• Although cooler conditions are being experienced residents need to remain vigilant as conditions can change rapidly.
• Motorists need to drive with care. There may be fallen trees, downed power lines and wandering stock near roads.

There is a large bushfire at  Dawson Rd, LAKE REPULSE.

The fire danger rating in this area is forecast to be high. Fire under these conditions can be difficult to control.

This fire may affect the communities of Ellendale, Karanja, Westerway, Hamilton, Ouse and Risbys Rd. Residents must remain vigilant and be prepared for any changes in fire activity.

Members of the public who return to these areas will need to be cautious of falling trees and branches that may fall with little or no warning.

There is no immediate threat to communities. Parts of this bushfire are currently not controlled.

There remains some active fire edge from the south of Repulse River down the western edge to just north of Sawdust Creek. Monster trucks headed for New Norfolk

MONSTER Trucks return to New Norfolk tomorrow (Saturday) night for a two-and-a-half-hour family show at the Mountain Dew Speedway, Lyell Highway. The show starts at 6pm but tickets are available at the gate from 3pm. Prices are: Family (2 Adults+2 Children) $118.90; Adult $43.90; Student (12-15yrs) $38.90; Child (3-11 years) $28.90); Under 3 years old, free.
