New Norfolk fire refuge closing

THE Tasmania Fire Service has announced that the community fire refuge at Carinya Education Park in New Norfolk is being closed. The centre operated for two days and after a busy first night, there are now no evacuees on site. A spokesman said closing the centre will allow valuable resources to be redirected.

Non-residents are still being asked to stay away from areas affected by the Lake Repulse fire, which remains uncontrolled. Motorists must drive with care as power lines and wandering stock are creating hazards. People are asked not to return to the camp areas in the area. Mt Field National park remains closed.

Firefighting crews are undertaking back-burning activities, this will result in smoke colums that are visible around Ouse and Ellendale. There may be embers, smoke and ash falling on Ouse until around 8pm. There is no immediate threat to communities however people should remain vigilant and report any fire concerns by calling 000.

Road closures: Ellendale Rd remains closed from Ellendale to the Lyell Hwy including Dawson Rd; Lake Repulse Rd and Cluny Lagoon Rd near Ouse from the intersection with the Lyell Hwy. Pillies Rd at the junction with Ellendale Rd is closed. Rockmount Rd at Ellendale Rd is closed.

A statewide police hotline has been established for people who are concerned or have enquiries regarding property and relatives: call 1800 567 567.
