A CAPTAIN'S knock was the order of the day in 2nd Grade on Saturday with Gretna I captain Ben Rainbird making a superb 170 and Molesworth I captain Ricky Martin making 114. Both leaders have shown some great form during the season and now is the pefect time to be amongst the runs. Both will be looking to do it all again this Saturday when the two sides face off against each other in the first week of the finals.
Rainbird opened the batting in his side's 181-run thrashing of Sandford at Gretna and hit 18 fours and 5 sixes, recording his highest score ever. Those who were at the ground said it was a great innings to watch and while Rainbird stole the limelight Glenn Blackwell made an excellent 86 runs, sharing a 167-run stand with his captain. Blackwell struck 8 fours and 4 sixes while at the crease. Earlier, the other opening batsman Damien Hack made 40 and he to shared a excellent opening stand of 124 with Rainbird. Craig Cunningham made 20 not out (2 fours) and Jackson Ackerly 18 (four). Gretna finished 5-355 off 50 overs (16 extras). In reply Sanford were bowled out for 174 off 34.2 overs (44 extras). Peter Jelkic bowled well taking 2-12 off five overs. Jackson Ackerly 2 for 36 off 6 while Ben Rainbird finished his day with 1-7 off two overs. Craig Cunningham took 1-14 off 5. Aaron Maddox took 1-28 off 4 overs and Corey Ransley 1-35 off 6.
Molesworth I record a 66-run win over the lowly Derwent at New Town High School on Saturday. As mentioned captain Ricky Martin made an excellent 114. Martin hit 10 fours and 5 sixes on his way to his first century for the season. Opener Nick Piuselli also batted well, making 76 (11 fours, 4 sixes). Chris Slater made 25 (4 fours) while young Brad Ransley made 24 with 5 fours. Ransley did well and shared a 102-run partnership with his captain. Molesworth finished with the great score of 8-312 off 50 overs (33 extras). In reply Derwent gave the big total a good shot but just couldn't get there, finishing 10 for 246 off 47 overs (34 extras). At one stage Derwent were 9 for 139, then a last-wicket stand off 107 kept the Molesworth players in the field that bit longer. Timmy Nichols, who hasn't played much this season, did well finishing 4-25 off 10 overs. Chris Slater took 3-32 off 6 while M. Siely got 1-46 off 10 and century maker Ricky Martin got 1-52 off 9.
In 4th Grade Bushy Park recorded their fifth win in a row, downing Marquis Tigers by 81 runs at Lansdowne. Danny Mason put a well made 71 together for the Park while the ever reliable Damien Madden made 49. Nathan Grant batted well down the order putting on 30 while J. Crosswell got 15 and openers Troy Smith and Nick Fenton made 17 each. Bushy Park finished 10 for 228 off 44.5 (23 extras). The Tigers got off to a bad start, losing the first wicket with just four runs on the board and from here just didnt look like getting close to the total to win and were bowled out for 147 off 32 overs (23 extras). Troy Smith continued his great season, taking 3-40 off 10 as did Nathan Grant 3-51 off 10. Mitch Crosswell opened the bowling and did very well taking 2-16 off 6 while Trent Grant got 1-35 off 6.
In the other 4th Grade match, Gretna II ended its season on a high, winning its first match since round seven by defeating McRobies Gully by 57 runs at Boyer Oval. Gretna had first hit making 10-157 off 38 overs (42 extras). In reply McRobies Gully were bowled out in 30.4 overs for the even 100 (18 extras).
In 5th Grade New Norfolk II went down to Richmond/Cambridge at Tynwald Park on Sunday. The visitors had first hit, making the very good total of 4-299 off 50 overs (30 extras). Jamie Hill was the main wicket taker with 2-49 off 9 overs while Mitch Rice took 1-22 off 4 and Richard Munnings was a tad expensive 1-70 off 10. In reply New Norfolk II were bowled out for 167 in 44.3 overs (28 extras). Jamie Hill top-scored with 31 (2 sixes), Graeme Rowlands 26 (5 fours), T. Mayne 21 (3 fours, 1 six), Richard Munnings 20 (2 fours), Dylan Pearce 12 (2 fours).
With Molesworth II forfeiting their last three out of four matches they are now out of the 5th Grade roster and didn't play this round.

THE Gretna Under 13s had a loss to New Town White last weekend. Jake Ransley top-scored with 14 not out while Josh Eyles, Blake Mayne and Blake Eyles all took two wickets each.
The Under 15s had a good win over Molesworth. Nathan Eyles top-scored with 27 while Reece Williams bowled well taking 2-11 off 5. The highlight of the match was the batting by Molesworth's Blake Kemmler who remained at the crease for 26 overs against some very good bowling. Well done Blake - a fine job indeed.
Gretna Cricket Club's Junior Trophy Day will be held on Saturday, March 16, at the Gretna Oval starting at 9am. The Under 13s and Under 15s will play a mixed match followed by a barbecue and trophy presentations. We hope to see you all there.

Derwent Valley comeback tour
Tourism Minister Scott Bacon said the campaign had been developed by Tourism Tasmania and the local tourism industry and would involve print, radio, television and social media. "The recent fires hit areas like the East Coast, the Tasman Peninsula and the Derwent Valley at the peak tourist season, having a significant impact on many businesses, Mr Bacon said.
"We want to encourage Tasmanians to support those operators by heading to these magnificent parts of our state - and not just for a day trip," he said. "This is about getting people back to spend a night or two exploring everything these regions have to offer. It's about restoring those communities by getting visitors back to all those businesses who have a stake in the tourism industry.
The television advertisement feature operators and other business owners from fire-affected areas. This includes the operators of attractions at Mt Field National Park and Strathgordon. The ads also direct viewers to a Tassie Comeback Tour Facebook page containing itineraries, ideas and information.
"The TV advertising is being further supplemented with print advertising, an eight-page feature in the state's three regional daily newspapers, and radio advertising through most of the state's metropolitan and regional commercial stations," Mr Bacon said.
The Facebook pages include suggested tours of the Derwent Valley over two-day (http://on.fb.me/WfkF4r), three-day (http://on.fb.me/Wfq9fz) and five-days (http://on.fb.me/WfqjDA). These can also be downloaded as PDF files. For the purposes of this campaign, the term "Derwent Valley" wisely includes the neighbouring Central Highlands.

Top price for Troubled Asylum

The hardback copy of Troubled Asylum and three antique keys from the hospital were offered for sale on eBay by a New South Wales man who had relatives working in the hospital from the 1930s through to the 1980s. The buyer is believed to live locally.
First published in 1981, Troubled Aslyum was one of a number of books written by the late Mr Gowlland, who lived at Lawitta for many years. A reprint in paperback was issued in 1996.
Some of Mr Gowlland's other titles included Some Van Diemens Land Affairs; Trampled Wilderness: the history of south-west Tasmania; Adamsfield: the town that lived and died; and Darke of the peaks: a short history of surveyor-explorer John Charles Darke in Van Diemens Land, Victoria and South Australia 1806-1844.

Shopping complex approved
PLANNING approval has been given for a major shopping centre on the outskirts of New Norfolk. Last week's Derwent Valley Council meeting voted 8-1 in favour of the development proposed by brothers Roostam and Raif Sadri.
The complex will occupy 5.4 hectares bordered by Hobart Rd, Glebe Rd and Ring Rd, an area that once formed part of the Royal Derwent Hospital. The development includes:
Councillor Wayne Shoobridge said there was nothing in the application that could be objected to, as it fell within all the rules. Cr Scott Shaw pointed out that there were not enough car parking spaces and planning officer Martin McCance said this was correct. Cr Chris Lester said the Sadris had met every requirement asked of them and although there was some angst about the impact on High St, this could not be taken into account in a planning matter. Cr James Graham said it was possible High St may end up being a little busier.
Cr Damian Bester said the predicted impact on the central business district was far greater than the 3% stated, as the developer's own economic study forecast a 21% reduction in turnover in the town centre. Cr Tony Nicholson said the development would draw new residents and turn New Norfolk into a "great outer suburb", while deputy mayor Barry Lathey said people wanted competition and it was up to the council to give people what they wanted.
The developers expect to have their supermarket up and running by 2015. A rival supermarket development on the Willow Court oval is expected to go before the council in the near future.

Willow Court film all but approved
A FILM documenting a paranormal investigation at the Willow Court historic site has been given in-principle approval to be released for public viewing. Last night's Derwent Valley Council meeting voted 7-2 in favour of allowing the film to be released after it has been viewed by the council's lawyer.
Produced by the Australian Paranormal Investigation Unit (APIU), the documentary was one of several contentious issues on the agenda for the February council meeting, and there were nearly 30 people in the public gallery. During public question time at the start of the meeting, Friends of Willow Court chairwoman Anne Salt reminded the council of its obligations under a Memorandum of Understanding and asked why the council had not involved the Friends in the approval process. Mayor Martyn Evans said these issues would be discussed when the item came up for discussion later in the meeting.
Contained in the agenda item headed "Willow Court Paranormal Documentary" was general manager Stephen Mackey's recommendation "That Council authorise release of the Willow Court Paranormal Documentary as provided to all councillors in February 2013." Councillor Judy Bromfield then proposed an amendment, seconded by Cr Damian Bester:
When put to the vote, Cr Bromfield's amendment was endorsed by all councillors with the exception of Crs Lathey and Nicholson.

Gretna's score was 1-235 off just 20 overs. Yes, that's right, 20 overs and they lost just the one wicket. Then Molesworth came out and belted 3-129 off 20 overs - that's 364 runs in 40 overs! Well done to all players and in particular Ryan Emery for making 50 runs. That's an excellent effort from both teams.
Meanwhile the Gretna Under 15s had a great win over Tas Uni Black on Sunday at Mount Nelson Oval. The highlight of the match was the 46 runs made by Jamie Davidson who batted extremly well and was unlucky not to make a half century. His innings included 3 fours and 4 sixes. Well done Jamie.

Local centuries in southern cricket
ROUND 17 of the Southern Cricket Association produced two excellent centuries: one from New Norfolk I all-rounder Stewart Rice who smashed 123 in his team's win over Runnymede, and the other from Gretna I wicketkeeper/batsman Glenn Blackwell who belted 118 in his team's victory over Richmond/Cambridge. It was both Rice & Blackwell's first hundred for the season and with finals coming up after the next round the timing of their good form couldn't be better.
In the match at Runnymede, New Norfolk I won the toss, elected to bat and hit up an impressive 9 for 342 off its 50 overs (27 extras). As mentioned Stewart Rice was the star for the Red Caps with his century, hitting 106 runs in boundaries (13 fours and 9 sixes)! Dav Maddox has also been in excellent form with the bat this season and hit 82 (8 fours and 2 sixes). Maddox shared a 147-run stand with Rice, setting up the big total. T. Hanson made 27 (5 fours) and opener Rohan Heron made 25 (3 fours). In reply Runnymede just couldn't handle the big run chase and were bowled out for 176 off 35.1 overs (18 extras). As he did with the bat, Rice also shone with the ball, taking 3 for 26 off 8 overs. Ashley Morgan 3 for 50 off 7.1, Josh Dykes 2 for 35 off 10 and Josh Rowlands 1 for 59 off 10 were the other wicket takers.
In a very good match at Richmond, Gretna I sewed up second spot on the 2nd Grade ladder with a 24-run win over Richmond/Cambridge. Gretna won the toss and had first hit, making the good total of 10 for 265 off 49.2 overs (38 extras). At one stage Gretna was 6 for 159 and a competitive total didn't look to be on the cards, but a welcome return to form by Glenn Blackwell with his 118 (12 fours and 4 sixes) lifting the team's total over 250. Blackwell shared a 94-run stand with Tom Allcock 16 (1 four). It was Blackwell's first hundred since the 2007-08 season where he made 107 in the former DVCA. Mathew Burns continued his good form, making 48 (7 fours) while captain Ben Rainbird made 21 (1 six). In reply Richmond/Cambridge fell just short, being bowled out for 241 off 48.2 overs (23 extras). Gretna opening bowler Aaron Maddox did well taking 3 for 49 off 10, Craig Cunningham 2 for 50 off 10, Peter Jelkic 2 for 52 off 10, Ben Rainbird 1 for 20 off 3 and Mathew Burns 1 for 41 off 5.2. Corey Ransley bowled well finishing 0 for 27 off 10 and was unlucky not to get a wicket. With a few catches going down, one would expect this to have been rectified at Gretna during the week.
In the third match in 2nd Grade, Molesworth I defeated Sandford at Boyer Oval by 4 wickets. Sandford won the toss and had first hit and was bowled out for just 82 off 30.2 overs, 22 coming in extras. The collapse of the Sandford batsmen was due to the excellent bowling of Molesworth captain Ricky Martin who snared 6 for 30 off 8.2 overs. Opening bowler Dean King also did well taking 2 for 11 off 7 overs. Brad Coppleman 1 for 2 off 1 over and Nathan Eiszele 1 for 25 off 10 also did well. In reply Molesworth made very hard work of the small total losing six wickets along the way, finishing 6 for 84 off 19 overs (5 extras). Brad Coppleman top-scored with 27 not out (3 fours). Nick Piuselli 23 (3 fours) and Ricky Martin 16 (1 four and 2 sixes) and Cody Neads 6no were the other run scorers.
In 4th Grade Bushy Park won their fourth match in as many weeks, thrashing McRobies Gully by eight wickets at Cambridge Oval. McRobies had first hit and was bundled out for just 67 off 20.1 overs (10 extras). Mitch Crosswell turned things on with the ball, taking 4 for 5 off 5 overs (1 wide and 1 no ball). The Grant brothers did well, Dylan 2 for 10 off 4, Nathan 2 for 36 off 5 and Trent 1 for 0 off 1 ball. Troy Smith took the other wicket, 1 for 16 off 6. In reply Bushy didn't much around and finished 2 for 71 off 13.4 overs (11 extras). Nick Fenton opened the batting and made 25, Damien Madden remained 20no and Geoff Crosswell 13no. Bushy have bowled a few sides out for some small totals this year and must be confident with finals coming up. Let's hope they can go one better this season and win the final.
Gretna II on the other hand just can't find that winning feeling, suffering a 208-run loss to Hobart at Gretna. Hobart won the toss and made the huge total of 4 for 351 off its 50 overs (51 extras). It was a hard day at the office for the Gretna bowlers with Joey Eyles taking 2 for 62 off 10 overs, Nick Wakefield 1 for 59 off 10 and Todd Jarvis 1 for 68 off 10. In reply Gretna was all out for 143 off 30.1 overs (24 extras). Veteran Brian Smith narrowly missed out on a half century, making 49 (7 fours). Joey Eyles gave good support and made 21 (4 fours), Adam Browning 13 (2 fours), and Cody Eyles made 12 (2 fours).
In 5th Grade New Norfolk II bounced back from its loss the previous week with a 111-run victory over second-placed Rokeby at Tynwald Park. The visitors won the toss and sent New Norfolk into bat to make a good total of 10 for 224 off 43.3 overs (38 extras). Captain Stephen Nichols batted well making 46 (4 fours and 3 sixes). Dylan Pearce did well making 25 (2 fours) while Jon Murray got 20 (4 fours) as did Richard Munnings 20 (2 fours). In reply Rokeby were bundled out for 113 off 23 overs (16 extras). Josh Walsh yet again cleaned up with 4 for 31 off 10. Richard Munnings 2 for 60 off 10, Adrian Eiszele 1 for 1 off 1 over and Mitch Rice 1 for 17 off 2 overs.
In the other 5th Grade match, Molesworth II forfeited to Richmond/Cambridge. This is the third time this has happened in the past four weeks.

In the match at Runnymede, New Norfolk I won the toss, elected to bat and hit up an impressive 9 for 342 off its 50 overs (27 extras). As mentioned Stewart Rice was the star for the Red Caps with his century, hitting 106 runs in boundaries (13 fours and 9 sixes)! Dav Maddox has also been in excellent form with the bat this season and hit 82 (8 fours and 2 sixes). Maddox shared a 147-run stand with Rice, setting up the big total. T. Hanson made 27 (5 fours) and opener Rohan Heron made 25 (3 fours). In reply Runnymede just couldn't handle the big run chase and were bowled out for 176 off 35.1 overs (18 extras). As he did with the bat, Rice also shone with the ball, taking 3 for 26 off 8 overs. Ashley Morgan 3 for 50 off 7.1, Josh Dykes 2 for 35 off 10 and Josh Rowlands 1 for 59 off 10 were the other wicket takers.
In a very good match at Richmond, Gretna I sewed up second spot on the 2nd Grade ladder with a 24-run win over Richmond/Cambridge. Gretna won the toss and had first hit, making the good total of 10 for 265 off 49.2 overs (38 extras). At one stage Gretna was 6 for 159 and a competitive total didn't look to be on the cards, but a welcome return to form by Glenn Blackwell with his 118 (12 fours and 4 sixes) lifting the team's total over 250. Blackwell shared a 94-run stand with Tom Allcock 16 (1 four). It was Blackwell's first hundred since the 2007-08 season where he made 107 in the former DVCA. Mathew Burns continued his good form, making 48 (7 fours) while captain Ben Rainbird made 21 (1 six). In reply Richmond/Cambridge fell just short, being bowled out for 241 off 48.2 overs (23 extras). Gretna opening bowler Aaron Maddox did well taking 3 for 49 off 10, Craig Cunningham 2 for 50 off 10, Peter Jelkic 2 for 52 off 10, Ben Rainbird 1 for 20 off 3 and Mathew Burns 1 for 41 off 5.2. Corey Ransley bowled well finishing 0 for 27 off 10 and was unlucky not to get a wicket. With a few catches going down, one would expect this to have been rectified at Gretna during the week.
In the third match in 2nd Grade, Molesworth I defeated Sandford at Boyer Oval by 4 wickets. Sandford won the toss and had first hit and was bowled out for just 82 off 30.2 overs, 22 coming in extras. The collapse of the Sandford batsmen was due to the excellent bowling of Molesworth captain Ricky Martin who snared 6 for 30 off 8.2 overs. Opening bowler Dean King also did well taking 2 for 11 off 7 overs. Brad Coppleman 1 for 2 off 1 over and Nathan Eiszele 1 for 25 off 10 also did well. In reply Molesworth made very hard work of the small total losing six wickets along the way, finishing 6 for 84 off 19 overs (5 extras). Brad Coppleman top-scored with 27 not out (3 fours). Nick Piuselli 23 (3 fours) and Ricky Martin 16 (1 four and 2 sixes) and Cody Neads 6no were the other run scorers.
In 4th Grade Bushy Park won their fourth match in as many weeks, thrashing McRobies Gully by eight wickets at Cambridge Oval. McRobies had first hit and was bundled out for just 67 off 20.1 overs (10 extras). Mitch Crosswell turned things on with the ball, taking 4 for 5 off 5 overs (1 wide and 1 no ball). The Grant brothers did well, Dylan 2 for 10 off 4, Nathan 2 for 36 off 5 and Trent 1 for 0 off 1 ball. Troy Smith took the other wicket, 1 for 16 off 6. In reply Bushy didn't much around and finished 2 for 71 off 13.4 overs (11 extras). Nick Fenton opened the batting and made 25, Damien Madden remained 20no and Geoff Crosswell 13no. Bushy have bowled a few sides out for some small totals this year and must be confident with finals coming up. Let's hope they can go one better this season and win the final.
Gretna II on the other hand just can't find that winning feeling, suffering a 208-run loss to Hobart at Gretna. Hobart won the toss and made the huge total of 4 for 351 off its 50 overs (51 extras). It was a hard day at the office for the Gretna bowlers with Joey Eyles taking 2 for 62 off 10 overs, Nick Wakefield 1 for 59 off 10 and Todd Jarvis 1 for 68 off 10. In reply Gretna was all out for 143 off 30.1 overs (24 extras). Veteran Brian Smith narrowly missed out on a half century, making 49 (7 fours). Joey Eyles gave good support and made 21 (4 fours), Adam Browning 13 (2 fours), and Cody Eyles made 12 (2 fours).
In 5th Grade New Norfolk II bounced back from its loss the previous week with a 111-run victory over second-placed Rokeby at Tynwald Park. The visitors won the toss and sent New Norfolk into bat to make a good total of 10 for 224 off 43.3 overs (38 extras). Captain Stephen Nichols batted well making 46 (4 fours and 3 sixes). Dylan Pearce did well making 25 (2 fours) while Jon Murray got 20 (4 fours) as did Richard Munnings 20 (2 fours). In reply Rokeby were bundled out for 113 off 23 overs (16 extras). Josh Walsh yet again cleaned up with 4 for 31 off 10. Richard Munnings 2 for 60 off 10, Adrian Eiszele 1 for 1 off 1 over and Mitch Rice 1 for 17 off 2 overs.
In the other 5th Grade match, Molesworth II forfeited to Richmond/Cambridge. This is the third time this has happened in the past four weeks.

Block stars go local

Dan Reilly and Dani Wells were contestants in last year's series of The Block and were called back to appear in this year's The Block All Stars. From 10.30am to 12.30pm this Saturday, the pair will be at Williams Mitre 10, to share their stories from the show – particularly the antics behind the scenes which did not make it to air.
There will be a live DIY demonstration from the couple on how to build a veggie patch using an Absco Hexies Raised Garden Bed. There will also be a sausage sizzle, in-store specials and a huge range of prizes and giveaways. Many of Mitre 10’s major suppliers will be in attendance to offer their own specialist advice.
Mitre 10's partnership with The Block will see the show's contestants visiting more than 50 Mitre 10 stores across Australia over four weeks in the Mighty Aussie Road Trip, meeting locals and offering home renovating tips. New Norfolk Mitre 10 manager Peter Williams said this Saturday would be a great chance to meet two of The Block's stars in person.
Rocking Collinsvale
THE third annual "Rock the Vale" festival will be held on the Collinsvale Recreation Ground this Sunday. There will be about 10 bands playing during the day, in a range of styles from bluegrass to rock to country, including young bands.
The Collinsvale Growers and Makers Market is on at time same time, as well a cafe, barbecue, pancake stall, icecream and fairy floss van, and a display of MG cars. Children will also be catered for..

MUCH of the Derwent Valley has woken to rain this morning, as well as much cooler conditions. Temperatures at Bushy Park and Ouse hovered around 30 degrees late into the night before reaching a low of 16 degrees at 6am. Today's forecast for New Norfolk is a maximum of 21 degrees, with rain at times.
The Tasmania Fire Service remains on the scene of the Molesworth bushfire as well as yesterday's Gretna grassfire, both of which are at "advice level". Monitor the situation by listening to ABC Local Radio on 936AM or 89.7FM, and see the official updates online at www.fire.tas.gov.au.

The fire danger rating in the area remains very high and there may be embers, smoke and ash falling on Gretna, Rosegarland and surrounding areas. There is no immediate threat to communities. Crews will be conducting back-burning and strengthening containment lines in the north-east of the fire. This will continue to cause smoke tonight.

- The barbecue is located within 20 metres of a permanent dwelling (mobile homes, caravans or tents are not classified as permanent dwellings).
- the area for 3 metres around and above the barbecue is completely cleared of flammable material.
- an adult is in attendance at all times
- a tap with hose connected is ready for use
- at least 10 litres of water is on hand in case of emergency.

Redpath storms to sprintcar victory
DESPITE the fact he hadn’t raced in the south of the state for almost two years, sprintcar driver Adrian Redpath stormed to an impressive victory at the Mountain Dew Ice Raceway near New Norfolk on Saturday night. The former four-times Tasmanian champion was making only his third appearance of the season after a heavy crash on his home track at Latrobe four months ago.
Driving a car owned by Launceston’s Darren Goodyer, Redpath qualified on grid three for the final with a spin in one of his heats costing him valuable points in the lead-up. Launceston driver Kurt Luttrell, who finished second in the state title at Carrick, set the pace in the heats and qualified on pole position for the 25-lap final, but threw the race away on the first corner when he spun, causing a stoppage. With Luttrell sent to the rear of the grid for the subsequent re-start, Redpath inherited pole position and a chance to make amends for his third placing in the state title, which was won by his brother Jason, who did not race last night.
At the re-start, Redpath blasted away from Launceston teenager Callum Zizek to establish a handy gap. Westbury’s Anthony Frost held third place for the first 10 laps, until a reinvigorated Luttrell charged back through the field to rocket by Frost and take over third. With Redpath assured of victory, Zizek, to his credit, managed to hold out the more-experienced Luttrell for a solid second and his best result of the season.
On the same program, Devonport super sedan driver and former National Super Sedan Series champion Brad Smith fought hard to take victory in the V8 Super Sedan Treat from a quality field, which included current and former Australian and Tasmanian champions. Reigning Australian champion Jarrod Harper, of Hellyer Beach, qualified on pole position for the final and survived an early battle with Launceston’s David Nichols, who slipped back through the field after an early mistake, which let Harper’s son and current Tasmanian champion Callum Harper, and Smith, through.
Smith powered around Callum Harper on lap four to take over second and hit the lead with a similar move on his father on lap 12. As Smith cleared out to a dominant lead, Callum Harper took advantage of a mistake from his father to snatch second spot on lap 18, with Harper Snr scrapping for third place in the remaining laps with former two-times Australian champion Kevin Purton, of Deloraine, and David Nichols, before holding them both out to finish third behind his son.
Saturday night’s program wasn’t just about V8s, with two state titles also decided for six cylinder sedan divisions. Hobart’s Luke Gunn scored his third consecutive victory in the Tassie Sixes state title, while Sean Devine, also from Hobart, took out his second consecutive Tasmanian Bombers Championship. Hobart veteran Marcus Cleary qualified on pole position for the 30-lap final of the Tassie Sixes championship with Gunn joining him on the front row. Cleary led early, but Gunn assumed the lead after only two laps with Dwayne Sonners also getting by Cleary on the next lap. Cleary spun on lap five causing a stoppage and was relegated to the back of the grid for the re-start, with Sonners retiring a lap after the re-start with a broken axle. Cameron Briggs inherited second and challenged Gunn in the dying stages, but proved unsuccessful, with Cleary making a concerted charge back through the field to claim third place.
In the Bombers title decider, defending champion Sean Devine had to work hard in the early stages of the race to ensure victory in a tough encounter. Former champion Mick Hart led Devine early after starting brilliantly from outside pole position, but tangled with lapped traffic mid-race, ending his night prematurely.
Devine inherited the lead and one in front, was never headed to score a huge win, lapping all but second-placed Heath Bennett. With only four cars finishing the gruelling final, post-race confusion reigned over third place to one of the remaining lapped cars, with officials eventually awarding the last podium spot to Garry Moore Jr.
Saturday night also saw the 12th round of the Junior Sedan Championship Series, with top qualifier Josh Stephens dealt a cruel blow when he punctured a tyre before the start of the race. With Stephens on the in-field, Hobart’s Nathan Russell took advantage of the favourite’s demise and scored a good win ahead of James Nolan and Harley Croft.
The V8 AMCA final saw an easy for Kallan Muir, with the Latrobe driver starting on outside pole position for the 20-lap decider and never headed for the entire race distance. Rodney Bassett, who started on pole position, finished a creditable second ahead of Josh Hardy, who recorded his best result of the season with a distant third in a tough race which saw half of the field failing to finish.

Driving a car owned by Launceston’s Darren Goodyer, Redpath qualified on grid three for the final with a spin in one of his heats costing him valuable points in the lead-up. Launceston driver Kurt Luttrell, who finished second in the state title at Carrick, set the pace in the heats and qualified on pole position for the 25-lap final, but threw the race away on the first corner when he spun, causing a stoppage. With Luttrell sent to the rear of the grid for the subsequent re-start, Redpath inherited pole position and a chance to make amends for his third placing in the state title, which was won by his brother Jason, who did not race last night.
At the re-start, Redpath blasted away from Launceston teenager Callum Zizek to establish a handy gap. Westbury’s Anthony Frost held third place for the first 10 laps, until a reinvigorated Luttrell charged back through the field to rocket by Frost and take over third. With Redpath assured of victory, Zizek, to his credit, managed to hold out the more-experienced Luttrell for a solid second and his best result of the season.
On the same program, Devonport super sedan driver and former National Super Sedan Series champion Brad Smith fought hard to take victory in the V8 Super Sedan Treat from a quality field, which included current and former Australian and Tasmanian champions. Reigning Australian champion Jarrod Harper, of Hellyer Beach, qualified on pole position for the final and survived an early battle with Launceston’s David Nichols, who slipped back through the field after an early mistake, which let Harper’s son and current Tasmanian champion Callum Harper, and Smith, through.
Smith powered around Callum Harper on lap four to take over second and hit the lead with a similar move on his father on lap 12. As Smith cleared out to a dominant lead, Callum Harper took advantage of a mistake from his father to snatch second spot on lap 18, with Harper Snr scrapping for third place in the remaining laps with former two-times Australian champion Kevin Purton, of Deloraine, and David Nichols, before holding them both out to finish third behind his son.
Saturday night’s program wasn’t just about V8s, with two state titles also decided for six cylinder sedan divisions. Hobart’s Luke Gunn scored his third consecutive victory in the Tassie Sixes state title, while Sean Devine, also from Hobart, took out his second consecutive Tasmanian Bombers Championship. Hobart veteran Marcus Cleary qualified on pole position for the 30-lap final of the Tassie Sixes championship with Gunn joining him on the front row. Cleary led early, but Gunn assumed the lead after only two laps with Dwayne Sonners also getting by Cleary on the next lap. Cleary spun on lap five causing a stoppage and was relegated to the back of the grid for the re-start, with Sonners retiring a lap after the re-start with a broken axle. Cameron Briggs inherited second and challenged Gunn in the dying stages, but proved unsuccessful, with Cleary making a concerted charge back through the field to claim third place.

The Fire Danger Rating in this area is forecast to be very high tomorrow from mid morning to early evening and then dropping to high. Temperatures are predicted to be in the mid-30s and winds are predicted to be out of the north-north-west with speeds of 20-25km/h and gusts up to 45km/h.
Overnight tonight the Fire Danger Rating will be high with wind speeds of 10km/h with gusts up to 15km/h.

- NSW, ACT, PWS and TFS remote area firefighters will continue tomorrow to extinguish hotspots in very rugged terrain, with the assistance of machinery and aerial water bombing, in the south western area around Ringwood Trail and Collins Cap.
- Due to a Very High Fire Danger Rating tomorrow (Monday) firefighters will not be undertaking remote work after midday for their own safety. Firefighters will be tasked with vehicle based patrols continuing to work on hotspots and to be available if necessary for the protection of properties and assets.
- Please drive carefully as roads may be affected by smoke in low lying areas. There may also be an increased amount of wildlife near roads.

Speedway V8 action galore
THERE will be plenty of high-octane action in this Saturday night’s V8 Triple Treat at the at the Mountain Dew Ice Raceway at Sorell Creek near New Norfolk. The 22-event meeting will include action-packed racing from three V8 divisions, namely sprintcars, super sedans and V8 AMCAs. But the action won’t just be restricted to the V8 divisions, with the Tassie Sixes sedans doing battle for their state title, plus support action from bombers and junior sedans. The gates will open at 3pm, with racing from 6pm.
Super sedan and sprintcar drivers will be out to regain lost pride and restore reputations after several weeks of major events recently, while the V8 AMCA drivers will be using the meeting as an all-important last hit-out ahead of the state title at Latrobe on March 1. Despite major recent super sedan events being run and won, this weekend’s field will be one of the best of the season and will include reigning Australian champion Jarrod Harper, his son and reigning Tasmanian champion Callum Harper, both of Hellyer Beach, former two-times Australian champion Kevin Purton, of Deloraine, former national Super Sedan Series champion Brad Smith, from Devonport, and six-times Tasmanian champion David Nichols, of Launceston.
Harper Snr and Purton finished second and third respectively in Australia’s richest V8 super sedan race, the Bendigo Bank Grand Prix at Latrobe behind winner Matt Pascoe, of Queensland, and both will be keen to assert themselves as Tasmania’s top driver. Callum has already tasted victory twice this season, including his memorable state title win at the local venue last month, while Jarrod has yet to record a feature win after a belated start to the season. David Nichols will jump back into the car he prepared for American ace and world champion Jimmy Owens, who drove it to victory in the Tasmanian Grand National last month, and Nichols will be fired up to take advantage of the changes Owens made to the car and continue its winning form.
Sprintcar drivers will also be out to salvage damaged reputations after last weekend’s state title at Carrick.
With newly-crowned state champion Jason Redpath taking a week off, his brother Adrian Redpath, from Latrobe, will be keen to score his first win of the season after finishing third in the state title. The driver who split them, Launceston’s Kurt Luttrell, will have other ideas as he looks to extend his lead in the state series, of which this Saturday night is round 12. Launceston teenager Callum Zizek and Ulverstone rookie Chris Johns were both impressive in last week’s state title and will race with renewed confidence.
Meanwhile, Hobart’s Luke Gunn will be chasing his third successive state title in the Tassie Sixes Championship and on recent form he could be hard to beat. His biggest dangers appear to be experienced local Marcus Cleary, New Norfolk’s Cameron Briggs and Dwayne Sonners, who is well overdue for a state title after a number of seasons as one of the leading drivers in the Tassie Sixes division.

Molesworth wins Eyles Memorial

MOLESWORTH I defeated Gretna I by four wickets at Gretna last weekend to become the first winner of the Ben Eyles Memorial Shield. Gretna won the toss and had first hit, making the competitive total of 10 for 183 off 40.2 overs. As he has done all season, Mathew Burns top-scored with 43 including two 4s and two 6s. Other Gretna batsman got starts but just didn't go on with it; Ben Rainbird 26 (two 4s), Craig Cunningham 23 (five 4s), Jackson Ackerly 15 (two 4s), Damien Hack 14 (two 4s), Corey Ransley (three 4s) and Glenn Blackwell 13 (two 4s). Of the Molesworth bowlers, Brad Coppleman bowled superbly, capturing 6 for 48 off 9 overs, Ricky Martin 2 for 31 off 8.2, Dean King 1 for 34 off 8 and M. Siely 1 for 55 off 10. There were 23 extras.
In reply Molesworth were in trouble when they were 6 for 88, but an unbeaten stand of 97 between young Daniel Coppleman 56 not out (five 4s, one 6) and the experienced Dean King 49 (nine 4s, one 6), saw Molesworth to victory. The pair batted well together, denying Gretna any chance of victory. Gretna bowler Bruce Emery did his best to keep his team in the match, taking 3 for 0 in 4 balls, finishing with 3 for 25 off 8 overs. Other wicket takers were Aaron Maddox 1 for 18 off 4, Mathew Burns 1 for 25 off 4 and Craig Cunningham 1 for 37 off 7. There were nine extras.
Well done to Molesworth on winning the Ben Eyles Memorial Shield, The shield is in memory of the late Ben Eyles who was a fantastic cricketer with the Ouse Cricket Club and later Molesworth. With the Eyles family also playing with Gretna these two sides will play for the shield each season in recognition of Ben's contribution to cricket her in the Derwent Valley and Central Highlands. Congratulations to Daniel Coppleman on winning the inaugural Ben Eyles Medal for being player of the match and to Jackson Ackerly on playing his 50th match for Gretna I.
New Norfolk I have had some big score this season, but its 7 for 435 over Bagdad on Sunday at Tynwald Park tops the list. To add to this, David Maddox and Rohan Heron again recorded centuries. Maddox smashed a magical 171 with 110 of these coming in boundaries (23 4s, 36s). Heron belted 125, regularly finding the boundary as well (16 4s, four 6s). The pair put on a massive 195 run partnership and when Heron was out the score was 2 for 270. Leigh Berry made 41, T. Hanson 28 (three 4s) and Ashley Morgan 25 (two 4s). There were 39 extras. In reply Bagdad could only manage 87, being bowled out in 21.5 overs. Josh Rowlands bowling very well took 4 for 29 off 10 as did Brad Kemmler 4 for 52 off 10. Stewart Rice did very well taking 2 for 0 off just 5 balls! (10 extras).
In 4th Grade on Saturday at the Bushy Park Showgrounds, Bushy Park crushed Derwent by nine wickets. Bushy won the toss and sent Derwent into bat. They were bundled out for 70 runs in 22.1 overs. Nathan Grant bowled very well and skittled the Derwent batsmen, finishing with excellent figures of 6 for 39 off 10 overs. Troy Smith has a broken finger from wicket-keeping some weeks back and did well taking 2 for 5 off 4.1 overs. Trent Grant 1 for 6 off 2 and Mitch Crosswell 1 for 17 off 6 took the remaining wickets. There were 18 extras. In the run chase, Bushy had little trouble reaching the target, losing just one wicket and finishing 1 for 73 off 5.3 overs (3 extras). Troy Smith did well opening the batting, making 45 not out. Nick Fenton gave good support making 24 and Damien Madden remained 1no.
In the other 4th Grade match Gretna II suffered their eighth loss in a row, going down to the Knights by seven wickets. Gretna won the toss and had first hit, making 10 for 104 off 32 overs (14 extras). Josh Farrow from the Gretna Under 15's did very well top scoring with 20 (three 4s). Nick Wakefield made 19 (three 4s), another Under 15's player Nathan Eyles made 14 (three 4s), while Brian Smith reached 11. In reply the Knights reached Gretna's total, finishing 3 for 107 off 11.3 overs (20 extras). Adam Browning took 2 for 61 off 6 and Joey Eyles 1 for 11 off 1.3 overs. Congratulations to Jamie Cooper and Jake Campbell on playing their first matches for Gretna. In 5th Grade New Norfolk II were brought back to earth after their winning streak, losing to Wellington by 120 runs at Abbotsfield Park. The Red Caps won the toss and sent Wellington into bat. They made 10 for 214 off 45.2 overs (36 extras). Josh Walsh continues to bag the wickets and took 4 for 43 off 10 overs, Jamie Hill took 2 for 21 off 9, Josh Dykes 2 for 40 off 6.2 and Richard Munnings 1 for 24 off 7. In reply New Norfolk were bowled out for 94 off 27.4 overs (26 extras). Jamie Hill was the only batsman to reach double figures, making 23 not out (two 4s).

TV series for Agrarian Kitchen

The sustainable farm-based Agrarian Kitchen was established in the old Lachlan State School in 2007 when Rodney Dunn and his wife Severine moved from Sydney to create Tasmania’s first hands-on, farm-based cooking school.
Set on five acres, The Agrarian Kitchen is a working farm and incorporates an extensive vegetable garden, orchard, berry patch and herb garden, all grown using organic principles. Also in residence are pigs, chickens, milking goats, beehives, geese, ducks and guinea fowl.
The Agrarian Kitchen grows and uses heirloom varieties of fruit, vegetables and rare breed animals in its cooking classes and also sources ingredients from local farmers, fishermen, gardeners and artisan producers. The cooking classes are led by Rodney Dunn, former food editor of Australian Gourmet Traveller magazine and one-time apprentice to chef Tetsuya Wakuda. The school also has a "supporting cast" of Tasmanian cooks and producers.
Rodney and Severine and The Agrarian Kitchen have already featured on several television programs but this will be the first series based solely at the cooking school. The TV series will be made in an observational documentary style covering all aspects of life on the farm and in the classes. The Digital Suite says this is not just another cooking show but a program about real food and how important it is in our lives.
The producers are searching for people interested in appearing in the pilot episode. Participants will need to make themselves available for a full day of filming at a date yet to be confirmed. Molesworth bushfire latest
SIGNIFICANT resources continue to be allocated to the Molesworth bushfire, nearly a week after it started on Glen Dhu Rd. Tasmania Fire Service crews with the assistance of remote area teams, aerial
support and machinery, are working on the
fire edge around the Ironstone Gully, Ringwood Rd and Ringwood Trail area.
The fire danger rating in this area is forecast to be low-moderate . Due to the terrain and local winds, fire under these conditions can be difficult to control . The fire has not been controlled but there is no immediate threat to communities.
Smoke from this fire may effect the communities of New Norfolk, Molesworth, Collinsvale, the Northern Suburbs and Mt Wellington . There are no reported road closures at 1.30pm. Monitor ABC Local Radio and www.fire.tas.gov.au for further information.

fire just south of Ringwood Rd, Lachlan. There is also activity on the south-eastern
edge to the north of East-West Trail through to Collins Bonnet in very steep
and inaccessible terrain.
