Staff wanted for New Norfolk's Reject Shop

NATIONAL discount variety store The Reject Shop plans to double its presence in Tasmania in the first half of this year, in the wake of the near-collapse of the Tasmanian-owned Chickenfeed chain.

The Reject Shop has opened outlets at Claremont and Bridgewater in the last fortnight. A New Norfolk branch will open after Easter, managing director Chris Bryce said last week. A Glenorchy store will open around the same time as New Norfolk, with others at Kingston, Sorell, Prospect Vale and Latrobe expected to be trading by then.

This will take the total number of The Reject Shop stores in Tasmania to 14, employing about 280 people. The company is assessing further opportunities and aims to have a network of at least 20 stores in Tasmania. Many of the new shops are being opened in former Chickenfeed sites.

“We have always had a long-term plan to expand in Tasmania since we opened our first store in Hobart in 2008," Mr Bryce said. "As we said in October, the Chickenfeed closures represent a great opportunity to expand our Tasmanian presence. Since late last year we have had continual enquiries from impacted customers and businesses as to when we will open, so I am delighted to see the store opening program coming together," he said.

“It is an exciting but also challenging period in getting this number of stores open in such a short timeframe. However, the response to our recent store openings in Rosny Park and Mowbray has been tremendous and shows our offer resonates well with Tasmanian communities. We are also pleased to be able to re-open these sites and offer employment opportunities to so many people given the significant impact the closure of Chickenfeed stores has had on local communities,” he said.

The Reject Shop describes itself as Australia’s largest discount variety retailer, offering a wide range of quality consumer goods and branded merchandise, at consistently low prices. Its product categories focus on every day needs including homewares, kitchenware, hardware, pet care, household cleaning products, toiletries and cosmetics.
