Different result in grand final replay

IT was a big Round 1 of the SFL also SFLW today. The grand final replay at New Norfolk saw the Two Blues dominate early in the game. Tempers started to flare throughout the second quarter and the remaining half of the game.

The Eagles started to get a bit of a run on and were looking like they were about to steal the game away from the Two Blues but Lindisfarne steadied in the third quarter and started to kick away to eventually stand tall over the reigning premiers at Boyer Oval.

Hobart v Dodges Ferry was a tightly contested game with the Tigers walking away with a two point win, while an inaccurate Sorell side was too good for Brighton. The Magpies chalked up a big win over The Port at Cygnet, with Luke Potter and Tyler Bowden booting 10 goals between them.

In the sole women’s game of the round, Claremont opened its season with a nine-point win over The Port.

THE operator of Yeah Yeah Clothing has closed her High St shop and will operate as a purely online business in future.

The locally owned business at 55 High St is believed to have closed yesterday. A series of posters on the shopfront windows state the operator's case and make a series of allegations about the cause of the closure.

Yeah Yeah Clothing opened at 2 High St in October 2016 and moved to the more central location some months later.

The shop was one of the few places to buy clothing in New Norfolk and its loss will be felt by many in the community.

LAST year's premiers New Norfolk host last year runner-up Lindisfarne in a big Good Friday grand final replay at Boyer Oval today.

The Eagles were pushed all the way by the Two Blues in last year's decider, but managed to hold them off and New Norfolk's win inflicted a second grand final loss in a row on Lindisfarne, having lost to Claremont in 2016. The Eagles were the strongest side all season in 2017, with their only loss coming to the Two Blues.

It will be a bit of a new look New Norfolk side this season with a few faces moving on, but the club also welcomes a few fresh faces. Lindisfarne has also lost a couple of well-known faces but has recruited some new ones as well. New Norfolk will also be unveiling its new coach Jeremy Parker as previous coach Matthew Smith was one of those to depart the club in the off-season.

The Eagles have made Boyer Oval a bit of a fortress over the years, being very strong at home, but the Two Blues fancy themselves a chance of overcoming this against the reigning premiers.

Red Caps clinch first SCA first grade title

THEY did it - New Norfolk has won the Southern Cricket Association first grade grand final. It went right down to the wire, with just one over remaining and St Anne's with two wickets in hand and needing seven runs to tie - enough for victory.

But New Norfolk I bagged two run-outs to win by four runs with three balls remaining. Jason Rigby and his Red Caps men had caused the upset of the season. Defeating the Crows was one thing, but in a First Grade grand final and on the opponent's home turf at Cadbury No. 1 was another, and the celebrations that followed showed this.

Earlier, after losing the toss, New Norfolk was surprisingly sent into bat and in no time was off to a great start. Openers Adam McKeown and Seb Wishart put on 43 before McKeown was out for 26 from 30 balls (four fours). Then Wishart, with 63 from 77 balls (eight fours) - in probably his best batting for the season - put on a 126-run stand with Matthew Bowden, who carved-up the Crows attack with a superb 80 not out from just 70 balls. Bowden, who was later named man of the match, hit seven fours and two sixes, one which was an outstanding shot up over cover which thrilled the crowd.

A rain delay interrupted this partnership and the match was reduced to 32 overs. When play resumed, Wishart was later out with the score at 2-169 . Harry Booth made a quickfire 19 from just 11 balls, hitting three fours. Nathan Eiszele made four and captain Jason Rigby remained 3no. New Norfolk finished with the great total of 4-201 from 32 overs.

In reply, St Annes needed to score just over a run a ball, so the pressure was on - not something the Crows were used to after dominating all season. The New Norfolk bowlers took it up to the opposition. Josh Rowlands bowled well, finishing with 2-44 from seven overs. Opener Joe McCulloch finished with 2-57 (10), while fellow opener Jason Rigby, after a mixed first over, took 2-47 from 9.3 overs. Rigby took it on himself to bowl the final over and secure the premiership win. Seb Wishart finished with 0-25 (3) and Jordan Banks-Smith 0-18 (2). There were four run outs, the last by Harry Booth was an excellent throw that sealed the match.

New Norfolk I is the first team from the Derwent Valley to play in and win a First Grade grand final. Well done to all involved. Club president Jamie Hill was over the moon. “We thought the rain may have washed our chances away but it was a fantastic effort from the boys - I’m really proud of everyone,” Hill said. With a club cricket trip already planned for Orford, it quickly grew in significance.

Well done to the St Anne's Cricket Club which had covers on the ground on Saturday morning in case of rain and also put them on during the rain delay. Another innovation on the day was the filming of the match by Duff TV. The footage was excellent, as was the commentary. New Norfolk's Josh Walsh had a turn in the box and called the St Anne's innings, but by the final over it was far too much for the passionate Walsh and he had to leave to be among the action on the boundary line. Again, well done New Norfolk — what a season it’s been for the club.

Salt added to council

THE Tasmanian Electoral Commission has named New Norfolk resident Anne Salt as the newest member of the Derwent Valley Council.

Following the resignation of Councillor Damian Bester on February 28, a recount was completed today to fill the vacancy on the council. As a result of the recount Mrs Salt was elected to serve as a councillor until the council election in October. More information is available on the TEC website.

Tasmanian Electoral Commissioner Andrew Hawkey said six of the nine eligible candidates had nominated to contest the recount. The others participating were all former members of the council: Wayne Shoobridge, former mayor Tim Morris, Chris Lester, former deputy mayor Scott Shaw, and former mayor Tony Nicholson who received the majority of Mr Bester's secondary votes but was pipped at the post by Mrs Salt, 193 votes to 185, after the distribution of preferences.

Mrs Salt is chairman of the Friends of Willow Court Special Committee and stood unsuccessfully as one of 19 candidates at the council election in 2014, finishing in 14th position with 131 primary votes. She also sought election to State Parliament that year as a candidate for the Tasmanian Nationals party, polling 122 first-preference votes and finishing 23rd out of 24 candidates.

Up or down for Humphrey St offshoot?

A PLAN to introduce one-way traffic in part of Humphrey St, New Norfolk, has been put out for public comment. The proposal, which does not appear to have gone through a council meeting, was published recently by general manager Greg Winton.

Under the heading "Proposed Traffic Restriction - Humphrey St, New Norfolk", Mr Winton said: "Council intends to seek approval from the Transport Commission to implement changes to a section of Humphrey St between Lachlan Rd and Glebe Rd. This will limit access to only allow one-way traffic entering off Lachlan Rd."

The road in question is the laneway running from Humphrey St up to the council depot on Glebe Rd. Originally a dirt track, the surface was sealed several years ago to the surprise of many of the councillors.

Details of the proposal are on display at the council offices in Circle St and written comments about it can be sent to the general manager, clearly marked "Humphrey St" and must be received by close of business on April 9.

Sheep graziers are warned that cold temperatures, rain and strong westerly winds are expected tonight and during Monday. Areas likely to be affected include the King Island, Furneaux Islands and North West Coast forecast districts and parts of the Central North, North East, Midlands, East Coast, Upper Derwent Valley and South East forecast districts. There is a risk of losses of lambs and sheep exposed to these conditions.

The next warning will be issued by 5am Monday.

Weather Situation:
A low pressure centre passing southern Tasmania will bring a strong and gusty southwesterly change during MONDAY morning and afternoon.
DAMAGING WINDS, averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts of 90-100 km/h are possible from the early morning on MONDAY in the west, the northeast coast and the Bass Strait Islands, then extending to the far south and the Central Plateau from the late morning.
Winds are expected to ease during the late afternoon and evening as the low moves away.
Locations which may be affected include Currie, Smithton, Whitemark, Strahan, Queenstown, Zeehan, Tarraleah, Hobart, Geeveston, Dover, Huonville and Dodges Ferry.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Supervise children closely.
* Check that family and neighbours are aware of warnings.
* Manage pets and livestock.
* Secure outdoor items including furniture and play equipment.
* Be prepared in case of power outages.
* Beware of damaged trees and power lines and take care when driving.
