Severe Weather Warning
for DAMAGING WINDS
For people in Furneaux Islands, Upper Derwent Valley, South East, North East, East Coast, Central North, Midlands and parts of Western, North West Coast and Central Plateau Forecast Districts.
Issued at 10:48 am Monday, 19 March 2018.
DAMAGING WINDS EXPECTED FOR THE EASTERN HALF OF TASMANIA DURING MONDAY MORNING AND AFTERNOON
Weather Situation: A vigorous cold front crosses Tasmania during today, with a westerly stream to follow.
DAMAGING NORTHWESTERLY WINDS, averaging 40 to 60 km/h with peak gusts of around 100 km/h, and up to 120 km/h in exposed locations, are possible across the eastern half of Tasmania.
Winds are gradually easing. DAMAGING WINDS are expected to contract to the eastern districts early this afternoon, then clear the state by late afternoon.
Locations which may be affected include Devonport, Launceston, St Helens, Swansea, New Norfolk and Hobart.
In the last 6 hours, Hobart has had a gust of 98 km/h, Launceston and Devonport have had gusts of 91 km/h and Mt Wellington/kunanyi a gust of 130 km/h.
The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Supervise children closely.
* Check that family and neighbours are aware of warnings.
* Manage pets and livestock.
* Secure outdoor items including furniture and play equipment.
* Be prepared in case of power outages.
* Beware of damaged trees and power lines and take care when driving.
* Listen to the ABC radio or check www.ses.tas.gov.au for further advice.
* For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132500.
The next Severe Weather Warning will be issued by 5pm Monday.
