Severe Weather Warning

for DAMAGING WINDS

For people in South East and parts of Western and Upper Derwent Valley Forecast Districts.
Issued at 9.50pm Monday, 1 July 2019.
DAMAGING WIND GUSTS IN SOUTHERN TASMANIA.

Weather Situation: A northwesterly stream will persist for the remainder of this evening ahead of a cold front to cross Tasmania overnight. A moderating westerly stream will then follow during Tuesday.
DAMAGING WINDS, averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts of 90 to 100 km/h are possible over southern Tasmania for the remainder of this evening.
Winds are expected to moderate in the early hours of Tuesday as a cold front crosses the state, and winds gradually tend westerly.
Locations which may be affected include Hobart, Geeveston, Dover, Huonville and Dodges Ferry.
In the last six hours the following wind gusts have been observed: 120 km/h Scotts Peak, 117 km/h Mt Wellington (kunanyi), 113 km/h Maatsuyker Island, 104 km/h Low Rocky Point. Hobart has observed a wind gust of 87 km/h and has been experiencing mean wind speeds of 50 to 60 km/h this evening.
The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Supervise children closely.
* Check that family and neighbours are aware of warnings.
* Manage pets and livestock.
* Secure outdoor items including furniture and play equipment.
* Be prepared in case of power outages and report any outages to TasNetworks on 132 004.
* Beware of damaged trees and power lines and take care when driving.
* Listen to the ABC radio or check www.ses.tas.gov.au for further advice.
* For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132500.

The next Severe Weather Warning will be issued by 5am Tuesday.

 Warnings are also available through TV and Radio broadcasts, the Bureau's website at www.bom.gov.au or call 1300 659 210. The Bureau and State Emergency Service would appreciate warnings being broadcast regularly.
