Severe Weather Warning

for DAMAGING WINDS

For people in the King Island, Furneaux Islands, Western, South East, North West Coast and parts of the Upper Derwent Valley, North East, East Coast, Central North and Central Plateau Forecast Districts.

DAMAGING WEST TO NORTHWESTERLY WINDS ABOUT NORTHERN, WESTERN AND SOUTHERN TASMANIA.



Weather Situation: A vigorous west to northwesterly flow over Tasmania increases tonight as a warm front, followed by a cold front crosses the state later tonight and early Friday.

DAMAGING WEST TO NORTHWESTERLY WINDS, averaging 60 to 80 km/h with peak gusts in excess of 100 km/h are likely THURSDAY afternoon and evening about Bass Strait and the north coast, and also about the west Thursday night. Damaging winds are then expected to extend to the south for a period Friday morning.
Winds are then expected to gradually moderate below warning thresholds during Friday.
Locations which may be affected include Devonport, Burnie, Strahan, Hobart, Geeveston and Dover.
In the 6 hours prior to 9:30 am, 120 km/h gusts have been observed at Cape Grim, 113 km/h on Hogan Island and 102 km/h on Swan Island.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Supervise children closely.
* Check that family and neighbours are aware of warnings.
* Manage pets and livestock.
* Secure outdoor items including furniture and play equipment.
* Be prepared in case of power outages and report any outages to TasNetworks on 132 004.
* Beware of damaged trees and power lines and take care when driving.
* Listen to the ABC radio or check www.ses.tas.gov.au for further advice.
* For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132500.
The next Severe Weather Warning will be issued by 11pm Thursday. Warnings are also available through TV and Radio broadcasts, the Bureau's website at www.bom.gov.au or call 1300 659 210. The Bureau and State Emergency Service would appreciate warnings being broadcast regularly.
