Woods elected to fill council vacancy

Natasha Woods
THE Tasmanian Electoral Commission has named Natasha Woods as the newest member of the Derwent Valley Council. Following the resignation of Councillor Anne Salt last month, a recount was completed today to fill the vacancy on the council.

As a result of the recount Ms Woods was elected to serve as a councillor until the next council election in 2022. More information is available on the TEC website.

Eight eligible candidates from last year's election contested the recount. Other than former council officers Philip Bingley and Matt Hill, the remainder were all former councillors: James Graham, Chris Lester, Tony Nicholson, Frank Pearce and Wayne Shoobridge.

Mr Hill was in the lead until the half-way mark of today's recount, after which Ms Woods pulled away on votes redistributed from former councillors Pearce, Graham and Nicholson.

Ms Woods polled 83 primary votes in last year's council election, finishing 14th out of the 18 candidates. The purpose of today's recount was to determine which candidate would be elected to council from the votes which had originally elected Mrs Salt. After 44 counts, Ms Woods ultimately received 235 votes, ahead of Mr Hill who received 181.

First preference figures from the 2018 council election were as follows:
