A BIG crowd attended
yesterday's 2019 Christmas Parade in High St, New Norfolk. First to take to the road in the annual pageant was the Derwent Valley unit of the State Emergency Service, with several vehicles and some very young representatives carrying two furry patients on a stretcher.
This was followed by the Tasmanian Chinese Buddhist Academy with a Buddha statue and a popular Chinese dragon and lion dance. Next along were local members of the Bridgewater PCYC, and then Fairview Primary School's "Buzzing Along" presentation which won the award for best school entry in the recent City of Hobart Christmas Pageant.

| Gretna Fire Brigade. |
Gretna Fire Brigade was represented by two vehicles, a host of junior members and their mascot Marshall of the Paw Patrol. Members of Derwent Valley Arts were next, suitably attired to promote next year's New Norfolk Steampunk Festival - steampunk being form of science fiction or fantasy inspired by 19th Century industrial steam-powered machinery.
George Simonetis is a regular in the New Norfolk Christmas Parade but came up with a new entry this year: a float decorated with an Australian outback camping Christmas theme, towed by a vintage Chamberlain tractor. This effort claimed first prize from the judges.

| New Norfolk Ambulance. |
The New Norfolk Ambulance Station was once again represented by local volunteers and a host of young friends, with a Christmas-themed ambulance and a miniature ambulance for fun. Members of the New Norfolk Neighbourhood Watch spread the message about their group which was formed last year to promote wellbeing and safety in the community.
There were several members of the New Norfolk-based German Shepherd Dog Club of Tasmania, as well as the Derwent Valley Community House, and then the members of Industrie Performing Arts. Next was the Derwent Valley Concert Band - another winner from the recent City of Hobart Christmas Pageant - and a participant in all 20 New Norfolk Christmas Parades. After the band were several members of the Derwent Valley Youth Future Action Team (D'FAT).

New Norfolk High School was represented, and New Norfolk Primary School had a big group dressed in the theme of The Nutcracker, with many toy soldiers and sugarplum fairies. Glenora District School followed with a Christmas-themed walking group. Next along was the Derwent Valley Dog-Walking Association, with pets, who were awarded third prize in the pageant.
St Brigid's Catholic School had its students in nativity costumes, and they were awarded second prize in the pageant. Anne Salt was next, driving a classic 1968 Ford Mustang convertible, and then Chris Salt driving a vintage 1931 Chevrolet roadster.

| Boyer Vision Team. |
The Boyer Vision Team was back once again to represent Norske Skog, supported by the popular TasBash dragon car with John Simpson at the wheel. The Boyer team also had a trailer with a Christmas theme of gifts and pine trees.
The MoCo Dragon Boat Club proudly displayed its locally-built dragon boat, along with a large inflatable dragon. New Norfolk Guardian Pharmacy was represented by staff members and their families, followed by Crusader Homes and its mascot. New business Tandam Services had two vehicles in the parade, including Adam Lawrence at the wheel of a classic Holden Monaro coupe.

| New Norfolk Fire Brigade. |
The New Norfolk Fire Brigade had a big presence, followed by the Corumbene bus and a float with the theme of Corumbene's Cosy Christmas. Featuring a double-sided fireplace complete with mantlepiece decorated for Christmas, the float was made by residents, staff and volunteers at Corumbene Care.
The Eleventh Order Brewery was back with its laid-back float featuring a lounges strapped to a Ford F150 truck, with passengers including a harmonica player performing popular tunes.

The Derwent Scottish Pipe Band has a long history with the New Norfolk Christmas Parade and provided a fitting tail-end to the pageant, just ahead of Santa Claus. All the while, the Australia Post mascot roamed at large, Roz Chapman and Craig Farrell provided a commentary broadcast on Tyga FM, and the Lions Club kept its barbecue and cake stall running throughout.
And for anyone who missed anything or wanted to see it all again, the pageant did a quick trip around Circle St and made its way back down High St for a second run-through, all organised by the Derwent Valley Rotary Club for the New Norfolk Business Alliance.
