Round 7
THE final round of the 50-over roster before the end of the year saw few wins for the local sides, several washouts and some good individual efforts. This weekend sees the a return to the T20 series for its semi-finals and grand finals.
FIRST GRADE: After just one loss from six matches, New Norfolk went down to Wellington by eight wickets at Tynwald Park. After winning the toss and batting, the Red Caps were outplayed and bowled out for the small score of 79 off 22.3 overs. In reply, the Warriors did it easy, finishing 2-81 off 16.2 overs. With some of their main players out, all batsmen struggled against the visitors' attack. Richard Graham top-scored with 27. Aaron Drew made 21 and with the ball took 1-11 off three overs, while Jye Lester recorded 1-8 (2.2).
SECOND GRADE: After four wins on the trot, Gretna I was defeated by Derwent by 88 runs at North Warrane Oval on Saturday. The home side won the toss and elected to bat, hitting up the competitive total of 8/207 from its 50 overs. In reply, Gretna wasn’t up to the challenge and was bowled out for 119 from 37.5 overs. Mathew Burns top-scored with a quickfire 30 from 31, hitting four 4s and a 6. Craig Cunningham made 18 and Jackson Ackerly 16. Earlier with the ball, Trent Grant took 2-24 (5) and Mathew Burns 2-29 (10). Congratulations to Rhys Browning for playing his 150th for Gretna I.
In the match at Boyer Oval, Molesworth I went down to the Knights by 52 runs. Winning the toss and batting, the visitors made the good score of 7/219 off their 50 overs. Opening bowler Jeremy Nichols took 1-38 off 8.1 overs and Jamie Adams was extremely tight taking 1 for just 7 off five overs with two maidens. In reply, Molesworth finished 9/167 off 40.2 overs. Batting at number three, captain Jamie Adams made 37 from 67 deliveries which included five 4s, but then retired after injuring his hamstring. Nick Piuselli did well making 35 from 48 hitting three 4s and a 6. Brad Coppleman made 18, (one 4 and one 6) while Brad Ransley made 17 with three fours.
The rain had the final say in the match at Richmond between New Norfolk II and Richmond/Cambridge, and it was washed out.
FOURTH GRADE: Bothwell I made it five wins from seven matches with a three-wicket win over St Virgil’s at Bothwell. The visitors won the toss and had first hit and were bowled out for 152 off 35.2 overs. In reply, Bothwell reached the target from 26 overs, finishing 7/154. Batting at number four, Josh Eyles didn’t muck around, making 49 off 47 deliveries, hitting four 4s and a 6. Simon Eyles made a quick 39 from 30 deliveries, Eyles hit six 4s and a 6 during his entertaining innings. Matthew Eyles made 15 from 26 with one 4 and one 6, and Joey Eyles made 14. Three bowlers took three wickets each. Openers Brock Nichols 3-28 (10) with four maidens and Cody Eyles 3-31 (9.2) with two maidens continue to bowl well in tandem in what is one of Fourth Grade's best opening duos. Matthew Eyles as usual, takes wickets when needed and finished with very good figure of 3-21 (6), one maiden, while Nathan Eyles took 1-30 (4).
FIFTH GRADE: The old saying in cricket circles that it never rains at Gretna didn't ring true on Sunday, when Gretna II and Claremont didn’t get a start and the encounter was washed out, as was the match at Tynwald Park between New Norfolk III and Montagu Bay.
SEVENTH GRADE: Molesworth II recorded its fourth win of the season when it defeated Bothwell I by four wickets at Boyer Oval on Sunday. Batting first, Bothwell made 10/129 off 27 overs. Nathan White top-scored with 26 from 37 deliveries (two fours). Young Jorden Conley batting at number 10 made 21 from 18 balls, hitting three 4s. Opener Andrew Rolls made 20 (25) with three 4s and Adam Clark made 16 (26). For Molesworth, Brad Jarvis bowled very well sending down six overs and capturing 3-23. Jamie Bowerman also capitalised, taking 3-30 (8). Daniel Williams cleaned up the last two batsmen taking 2-3 off just one over, while after a six-wicket haul last week, Nathan Triffitt took 2-29 (5), one maiden. In reply, Molesworth got the job done finishing 6/132 from 22.1 overs. Young opener Josh Nichols made a fine 50 runs from 60 deliveries which included five well-struck 4s. Nichols put on 87 with fellow opener Jayden Wilton who batted well making 37 from 25, hitting two 4s and two 6s. The partnership laid the foundation for the good win. At number eight, Daniel Williams did well with 14no from 14 balls. Among the wicket-takers for the Bucks, Ashley Browning got his best figures for the season thus far, taking 3-12 from 4.1 overs in a good spell, while Nathan White took 2-39 (8) and captain Peter Hansch picked up 1-24 (3).
