Initial works include the removal of trees along the route that have been deemed dangerous, as well as concrete works and stormwater installation at Bushy Park.
The second stage will include pavement rehabilitation, resealing and line marking at various locations, starting at the Bushy Park end.
"This important project is being funded by a Tasmanian Government grant of $2.5m as part of the Roads Package to Support Tasmania’s Visitor Economy," a Derwent Valley Council spokesman said. "The project will enable the long-awaited and greatly-needed upgrade of Glenora Rd, a major thoroughfare for residents and tourists visiting the Derwent Valley."
A reduced speed limit of 70km/h is in place for the entire stretch of road for the duration of the works. The limit applies day and night on the section of road between the New Norfolk town boundary and the junction of Glenora Rd and Gordon River Rd at Bushy Park.
"While the contractor will aim to have both lanes open wherever possible during peak times, there will be single lane closures throughout the works period and delays of up to 15 minutes may be experienced where required for safety," the council spokesman said.
"The alternate route between the Glenora Rd/Gordon River Rd intersection and New Norfolk via the Lyell Hwy will not be affected and will be open as usual with no speed restrictions."
The total project includes:
- Upgrade of the Glenora Rd/Gordon River Rd intersection including improved "line of sight", pavement works, new kerb and channel and new traffic island
- Pavement rehabilitation and stabilisation of sections
- Resurfacing works
- Drainage works
- Vegetation management where required
- Safety improvements including "line of sight" considerations
- Dip alignments and adjustments
- Appropriate road signage
- Linemarking, safety barriers and other safety considerations.
