Round 5
FIRST GRADE: In a one-sided affair, New Norfolk I made light work of its opponent when it thrashed Sorell by nine wickets at Tynwald Park last weekend. The visitors won the toss and elected to bat, but from here, nothing much went right and they were bowled out for 76 off 32.5 overs. This was due to some great bowling by the Red Caps, in particular Seb Wishart who sent down 7.5 overs taking 2 for just four runs in a very tight spell. Josh Rowlands took 2-21 (9), Jason Rigby 2-29 (10) and Thomas Briscoe 1-19 (6). There were three run outs. In reply, New Norfolk got the job done quickly, losing just one wicket to finish 1/77 off six overs. Opener Jordan Willoughby did the damage with a fine half-century and finishing with 54. Congratulations to Luke Jarvis who played his first game of First-Grade cricket. Well done young fella.
SECOND GRADE: A superb 73-ball century from Molesworth I captain Jamie Adams helped his side to its third win when it defeated Derwent at Clarence High School on Saturday. Batting at number six, Adams belted 12 fours and two 6s during his 105 runs and shared a 102-run stand with young Jeremy Nichols who made 14. Brad Coppleman made 22 and his brother and opener Daniel Coppleman made 20 while Brad Ransley made 14. In reply, Derwent was bowled out for 161 off 43.1 overs. Molesworth used eight bowlers and Brayden Hodge did very well taking 4-27 from 10 overs while spinner Kye Tomkinson took 2-24 (5). Jeremy Nichols capped off a good day with 1-37 (9) and Brad Coppleman took 1-23 (7.1).
A 135-run partnership for the fifth wicket by Gretna I batsmen Aaron Maddox and Craig Cunningham steered their team to its third win on the trot when defeating Richmond/Cambridge by six wickets at Gretna. Chasing 187 for victory, Gretna was in a spot of bother at 3/15 and 4/53, but then came Aaron Maddox 75no from 83 balls and Craig Cunningham 65no from 113. Maddox made a welcome return to form, hitting eight 4s and three 6s while the reliable Craig Cunningham did well with four 4s. Jackson Ackerly made 18(28) and Gretna finished 4/188 off 40.5 overs. Earlier, Gretna used eight bowlers with Corey Ransley taking 1-17 (10) with three maidens, Aaron Maddox 1-27 (10) two maidens and Ben Rainbird 1-18 (3). There were three run outs. Richmond/Cambridge reached 6/186 off 50 overs.
In the match at North Warrane Oval, New Norfolk II outplayed the MacKillop Beltas by six wickets. Bowling first, the Red Cap bowlers ripped through the Beltas' line up, dismissing them for 84 from 34.3 overs. Former Bushy Park player Mitch Crosswell sent down 3.3 overs to capture 3-10. Nathan Rice also took wickets, finishing with 3-23 from his 10 overs which included three maidens in a great spell. Ruvinda Nanayakkarra was very tight with 1-8 off 5, as was Stewart Rice with 1-14 off 7 overs with three maidens. In reply, New Norfolk got the job done off 22.1 overs, finishing 4/85
FOURTH GRADE: In the match at Bothwell, the home side was defeated by Hobart by 39 runs. Hobart had first hit and made 8/223 off 45 overs. In reply Bothwell I was bowled out for 184 from 41.1 overs. Josh Eyles top-scored with 31 with five 4s. Simon Eyles made 28 (four 4s). Nathan Eyles 23 (three 4s, one 6) and Mark Pearce 20 (four 4s). Earlier, opener Josh Eyles bowled well taking 3-31 (6) as did Nathan Eyles 3-44 (10) and Matthew Eyles 2-45 (9).
FIFTH GRADE: Gretna II recorded its second win of the season with a big 123-run win over Lindisfarne at Gretna on Sunday. Winning the toss and batting, Gretna made the good score of 10/199 off 46.5 overs. Openers Marc Worldon 40 from 58 deliveries (five 4s) and Josh Whitford 45 from 56 (four 4s, one 6) batted very well and put on 92. Then Tom Allcock made a fantastic 50 from 80 balls, hitting two 4s and one 6, and shared a 55-run stand with Jake Campbell who made 20 from 36 balls before he was run out. In reply the visitors were bowled out for 76 off 30.5 overs. The Gretna bowlers were exceptional, in particular Bailey Wheeler - who has taken 14 wickets from four Fifth Grade matches so far - sent down 7.4 overs to finish with the excellent figures of 4-8 in a fine spell. Jake Campbell wasn’t far behind, taking 3-20 (9). Josh Whitford took 2-24 (6) and Adam Browning bowled eight overs, 1-24. Congratulations to Ross Langford who played his 100th match for Gretna II.
In the match at Tynwald Park, New Norfolk brought up its second win with a two-wicket victory over Sorell. The visitors won the toss, elected to bat and made 10/143 off 44.5 overs. Jordan Banks-Smith led the way in a great spell taking 4-28 from 10 overs with two maidens. In his first match for the season, Bradley Chaplin sent down 10 overs taking 3-40. Nathan Heron did very well with 1-8 off 6. In reply, New Norfolk just got the job done finishing 8/144 off 32.2 overs. With the bat Jordan Banks-Smith made it a great day scoring 56 off 72 deliveries including five 4s, and sharing a 98-run stand with David Mitchelmore who made 32. Chris Hall made 11 and Bradley Chaplin remained 10 not out.
SEVENTH GRADE: At Boyer Oval on Sunday, Molesworth II made it three wins in succession when it defeated St Virgil’s by 46 runs. The visitors won the toss and sent Molesworth in to bat and in turn they made the defendable total of 10/196 off 36 overs. Captain and allrounder Jack Evans, in fine form of late, came in at first drop and made an excellent 63 from 66 balls. Evans carved up the opposition attack, hitting seven 4s during his 73 minutes at the crease. Down the order Daniel Williams put together a well-made 42 from just 29 balls which included four 4s and two 6s. Williams put on 54 with Jamie Bowerman who made 16. In reply, St Virgil’s finished 9/150 off their allotted 40 overs. All of the Molesworth bowlers did their bit. Nathan Triffitt took 3-26 from five overs in a very good spell. Again leading from the front, Jack Evans sent down 8 overs to take 2-18.
In the other match, Bothwell II went down to Wellington by 51 runs at Eady St Oval. The home side won the toss and elected to bat, making the very good score of 8/234 from their 40 overs. Wicket-takers for the Bucks were Nathan White with 2-40 from eight overs, Connor Woodham 2-20 (3) and Andrew Rolls 1-20 (6). In reply, Bothwell was bowled out for 183 off 31.5 overs. All-rounder Nathan White batted well, top-scoring with a well-made 45 from 53 deliveries including four 4s. White put on 68 for the fourth wicket with Adam Pearce who made a quickfire 36 from 32 deliveries, hitting six 4s. Earlier, openers Adam Clark 28 from 31 and Troy Branch 23 from 22 put on 55 in a good start to the innings. Andrew Rolls made 17 from 24 deliveries.
