Warning to Sheep Graziers
for the Upper Derwent Valley, King Island, Furneaux Islands, North West Coast, Midlands and South East forecast districts

Issued at 9:17 pm on Sunday 30 October 2016.

Sheep graziers are warned that cold temperatures, showers and strong westerly winds are expected during Sunday and Monday morning. Areas likely to be affected include the King Island forecast district and parts of the Furneaux Islands, North West Coast, Midlands, Upper Derwent Valley and South East forecast districts. There is a risk of losses of lambs and sheep exposed to these conditions.

The next warning will be issued by 5am Monday.

Horticulture course coming up

A COURSE for people interested in a career in the apple and cherry industry will be held at New Norfolk at the end of November. Carinya Education Park in Blair St will be the venue for the three-day short-course.

Conducted by TasTAFE, the course will be a combination of hands on practicals, class room theory and a field trip to a local orchard, covering four of the 15 units required for a Certificate 2 in Production Horticulture.

The units covered will be: support harvesting; canopy maintenance; workplace health and safety; and quality assurance. The same course will be conducted at the Sorell and Huon Valley Trade Training Centres.

Costing $49.90, the course is described as a starting point for a career in food production. Prospective students are recommended to talk to one of the teachers to confirm their eligibility for the course.

Delayed start for youth cricket

ROUND 1 of Youth League cricket was due to get under way last Sunday, but both Gretna and New Norfolk matches were washed out.

Round 2 will be played this Sunday.  In the Under 13s, Gretna will play Old Beach Green at Cove Creek Oval, and  New Norfolk will take on the St Anne's Crows at Cadbury No.2. Both games start at 9am.

In the Under 14s, Gretna will play the North Hobart Demons at Queens Walk at 12.15pm and New Norfolk will play Brighton Red at Boyer Oval at 9am.

Second weekend washed out

WET weather continued to bug the start of the cricket season last weekend, with many games not able to get under way in the Southern Cricket Association's Twenty20 competition. First, second, fourth and sixth grade matches were all washed out on Saturday, leaving just seventh and eighth grades to see any play over the weekend.

In seventh grade on Sunday, New Norfolk III recorded a good 15-run win over the Knights at Pontville. Winning the toss and electing to bat, the Red Caps made the good score of 8/133 off their 20 overs. Young Cody Morgan-Coleman played a handy innings in his team's top score of 32. Cody's innings included three fours and one six. Opener Glen Williams made 21 with four fours, while Nathan Rice made a solid 18 with two boundaries. In reply, the Knights gave it a shake, but fell 15 runs short, finishing 8/133 off 20 overs. Rhys Franklin was the main wicket taker for New Norfolk taking 2-28 (4) and Cody Morgan-Coleman capped of a good day, with fine figures of 1-13 off his 4 overs.

In eighth grade, Bothwell II went down to St Anne's by 19 runs at Cadbury's No.1. The home side had first knock making 5/105 off its allotted 20 overs. Mathew Glover was the best of the Bucks bowlers with three wickets. In reply, Bothwell was dismissed for 86 off 18.5 overs. No batting figures were available at the time of writing.

The round one eighth grade clash between Bothwell and Sandford that was washed out was rescheduled and played last Thursday with Bothwell having a big 97-run win. Winning the toss and having first hit, the Bucks made 7/141 off their 20 overs. Young Josh Eyles stepped up making 45. Adam Clark made a handy 27 as did Anthony White with 25 while Joey Eyles made 16. In reply Sandford made just 9/44 off 14.1 overs due to some great bowling by the Bothwell boys. Peter Hansch in a great spell sent down four overs taking 3-7. Joey Eyles had fine figures of 2-0 off 1.1 overs while Mathew Glover 2-9 (3) and Brodie White 2-14 (4) also did their bit.

Round 1 of the 50-over matches is scheduled to get under way this weekend and with only 14 rounds to be played let's hope we don't have any more washouts. Perhaps the Twenty20 matches should have been left as they were last season (played during the week)to allow for more rounds of the 50 over format.

Smoke on the horizon today

WEATHER permitting, the Tasmania Fire Service will be conducting a fuel reduction burn at Mt Faulkner near Granton today. This is part of a statewide fuel reduction program which aims to reduce the bushfire risk to help protect lives and communities.

The TFS says the total area of this burn will be about 100 hectares and is likely to take 1-2 days to complete. Smoke may persist for some days afterwards, depending on wind conditions.

Public access to the area will be restricted during  the operation. The public is asked to remain well out of the burn site while the burn is taking place and for the following days until safety checks have been made along tracks and trails. People in the area are asked to comply with directions from fire service staff and to observe any signs posted.

The TFS says the fire intensity will be low, but it will still generate flames, smoke and ash. People with medical conditions that may be affected by the fire can obtain advice from the Department of Health and Human Services website  or www.asthmatas.org.au. Fire claims old Magra shop

POLICE say there are suspicious circumstances surrounding a fire that destroyed the old Magra Village Store early this morning.

Tasmania Police and the Tasmania Fire Service attended the structure fire at 374 Back River Rd, Magra, just before 4am today. Despite the efforts of the firefighters, the weatherboard building was largely destroyed.

"A preliminary investigation was conducted by TFS and Police at the scene. Whilst the exact cause is yet to be determined, the matter is now being treated as suspicious," police said in a statement.

Built around 1960, the shop has been closed for some time and was recently sold by Derwent Real Estate.

Police said no-one was injured in the fire but the damage was estimated at about $100,000. Anyone with information about the fire can contact Bridgewater CIB on 13 14 44 or Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.

The River Derwent below Meadowbank Dam peaked at 4.04 metres around 2:00 pm Sunday 23 October and is currently at 3.73 metres and steady.
The River Derwent at Macquarie Plains is currently at 2.42 metres and falling.

Glover retains national title

SORELL Creek driver Kieran Glover successfully defended his Formula Vee National Challenge title at Barbagallo Raceway in Wanneroo, Western Australia, this afternoon.

Competing in the 1600cc division, Glover was the popular and undisputed winner, finishing well ahead of the rest of the field.

A commentator on Facebook wrote: "Well done team! A very hot day, and amazing hard work. No one else on the home straight when Kieran crossed the line!"

Formula Vee is regarded as the first proving ground in motor racing and a stepping stone to higher levels of motorsport. Larry Perkins, Jason Bargwanna, Colin Bond and John Bowe all began their careers in Formula Vee.

A flood watch continues for Northern and Central river basins, the River Derwent and the Huon River.

Highest rainfalls recorded since 9:00am Saturday have been 15mm at Interlaken and 14mm at Mount Victoria. Elsewhere widespread falls of up to 10mm have been recorded across Tasmania. Showers and possible hail are forecast for the rest of Saturday, becoming light into Sunday. 

River rises have been observed in the North Esk River, South Esk River and Macquarie River catchments in the north, and in the Huon River and River Derwent catchments in the south. With rainfall in the last 24 hours, forecast rainfall and current catchment conditions, further stream rises are likely with some areas of minor flooding possible. A minor flood warning has been issued for the Macquarie River.

The Bureau is monitoring the situation and will issue catchment specific warnings if required.

Strong and dangerous flows are likely to remain a hazard in all catchments during Saturday into Sunday.

A flood watch continues for Northern and Central river basins, the River Derwent and the Huon River

A cold front crossed the state on Friday morning and an associated low pressure system lies south of Tasmania. In 12 hours to 3pm Friday the highest observed rainfall totals were 37mm in the north east and 25mm in the south. Widespread falls of 10 to 20mm were recorded across Tasmania. Further falls of 5 to 15mm are forecast for the remainder of Friday into Saturday. 

River rises have been observed in the North Esk River catchment in the north east, and in the upper Huon River catchment in the south. With forecast rainfall and catchment conditions, further stream rises are likely with some areas of minor flooding possible.

The Bureau is monitoring the situation and will issue catchment specific warnings if required.

Strong and dangerous flows are likely to remain a hazard in all catchments during Friday into Saturday.

Getting into junior cricket

PLAY gets under way in the Cricket Tasmania Youth League this this Sunday. In the Under 13s, Gretna will play the Glenorchy Magpies at the St Virgil's College and New Norfolk will play Wellington Warriors at Eady St. Both games start at 9am.

In the Under 14s, New Norfolk will play New Town Bucks at Ogilvie High School at 9am and Gretna will play the Glenorchy Magpies at St Virgil's College at 12.45.

With changes to help improve the enjoyment of the game, most notably the pitch and boundary lengths, the kids can look set for a exciting season. Training for the New Norfolk juniors is of a Wednesday evening 4-6pm while the Gretna juniors are training on a Thursday evening starting at 5pm.

Also getting under way this Sunday is Milo in2Cricket at the Glenora District School. This is an entry-level program for young players and there is still time to register. Just go to playcricket.com.au  > find my local club > enter your postcode > Glenora District High School > Milo in2Cricket.

In2Cricket caters for boys and girls aged 5-8 and there will be two programs this summer, running from October 23 to December 4, and February 5 to March 19. T20 BLAST
Starting next week is an eight-week Milo T20 Blast program helping children to expand their skills. This will run every Friday from October 28 to December 16, from 4.30-6pm. T20 Blast caters for boys and girls aged 7-12 years and the cost is $99.

Cricket season starts with Twenty20 superbash

ROUND 1 of the Southern Cricket Association Twenty20 Superbash got under way last weekend, with one match washed out due to the wet weather.

After having to moving their game to Sorell due to the home ground being too wet, Gretna I accounted for the Sorell Eagles by four wickets in second grade. Sorell had first knock making 3/119 off 20 overs. In reply Gretna struggled early to be 4/45, but then a 61 run stand by allrounder Aaron Maddox 53 not out and Captain Todd Jarvis 12 runs, got the team all but home. Maddox showed great poise and control during his innings which included three sixes and one four. Zac Crosswell showed early form with his straight bat remaining 12no (one four). Craig Cunningham had the best bowling figures for Gretna with 1-16 (3).

In first grade, New Norfolk I went down to Old Beach at Tynwald Park by five wickets. The Red Caps lost the toss and were sent into bat making 10 for 80 off 20 overs. Captain Jason Rigby made 14 as did Rohan Heron, while Cody Neads remained 10no. In reply Old Beach chased down the total with two overs to spare. Wicket-takers were Nathan Eiszele with good figures of 2-11 (4) and Jason Rigby 2-18 (4).

In second grade, Molesworth I got off to a good start by downing Richmond/Cambridge at Boyer Oval by five wickets. The visitors were bowled out for just 63 off 19 overs. This was mainly thanks to the performance of Daniel Coppleman who sent down 4 overs taking 4-16. New player Chris Sinclair also did well capturing 3-15 (4). Young Jeremy Nichols showed good signs taking 2-17 (4). In reply Molesworth lost five wickets in the run chase. Brad Coppleman top-scored with 26, while Coppleman struck the ball well hitting five boundaries. Josh Ransley made 12 (two fours).

Thanks to a half-century by Bothwell I opener Simon Eyles and a five-wicket haul by new player Craig Pursell the Bucks were able to account for St Virgil's by 22 runs in fourth grade. Played at St Virgils, Bothwell had first knock making 5/112 off its 20 overs. Simon Eyles batted making 56, while Mathew Eyles was next best with 16. In reply the home side was bowled out for 90. This was thanks to Craig Pursell's excellent spell of bowling, taking 5-18 off 4 overs. Captain Brock Nichols led the way with good figures of 1-11(4).

In the other fourth grade matches, Gretna II made a great start to the season with a 16-run win over Derwent at Sorell. First time Captain Tom Allcock won the toss and elected to bat making 5 for 103 off its 20 overs. Opener Brian Smith top-scored with 28 (two fours, one six). In a handy partnership, Smith and fellow opener Jordan Hastie 20 runs (one four) put on 44. Dion Hay showed good signs making 18no. In reply Derwent was dismissed for 87 (18.2). Youngster Jake Campbell bowled superbly finishing with the fine figures of 3/4 off 3.2 overs to be the main wicket taker while spinner Aaron Browning took 2/21 (4).

New Norfolk II recorded a 29-run win over Bagdad at Tynwald Park on Sunday. The Red Caps had first dig making 5/121 off its 20 overs. Captain Chris Ashcroft batting at first drop lead from the front with a fine 50no. Ashcroft's innings included four fours and two sixes in what was a real captain's knock. He teamed up with coach Todd Rusher 23 runs (two fours) putting on a excellent partnership of 76 runs. In reply Bagdad was bowled out for 92 off 19 overs. Liam O'Brien showed what he can do with the white ball, sending down 2-6 off 4 overs in a very tight spell of bowling. Brad Kemmler also did well 2-14 (4).

In the match played at Pontville, Bushy Park 9 for 100 off 18.5 overs went down to Hobart 3 for 101 (17.3). Bushy Park keeper Shaun Fenton got in some early form top-scoring with 31, while Troy Smith made 16. Of their wicket takers, Dylan Grant took 2/16 (3) and Shaun Grant 1/16 (2).

In the sixth grade match played at Boyer Oval on Saturday, Molesworth II accounted for Sandford by eight wickets. The visitors won the toss and elected to bat, making 7 for 84 off their 20 overs. Opening bowler Tim Nichols bowled very tightly finishing with 3-8 off his four overs in a very good spell. Other opener Jye Lester did like wise finishing with 2-9 (4). In reply, Molesworth lost just the two wickets finishing 2/86 off 16.1 overs. Youngster and opener Jayden Wilton showed things to come with a very valuable 33 runs, which included three fine fours. Tim Nichols had a good day out and remained 24no (two fours, two sixes). While Daniel Adams made 19.

In the seventh grade match at Tynwald Park on Sunday, New Norfolk III belted the Beltas by nine wickets. MacKillop had first hit and made 7/56 off its 20 overs. All the Red Caps bowlers did their bit, but it was youngster Rhys Franklin who gave a good display of bowling taking 2-11 off 3 overs, while Shayne Upton did likewise 1-6 (3). In reply, New Norfolk chased down the total with the loss of just one wicket and 6.4 overs to spare. Opener David Mitchelmore topped scored with 24 (one four), Shayne Upton 17 (one six), and Nathan Rice 13no (one four).

The eighth grade match on Sunday between Bothwell and Sandford at Sandford resulted in a wash out.

FLOOD WATCH FOR NORTHERN AND CENTRAL RIVER BASINS, THE RIVER DERWENT AND THE HUON RIVER

This is a flood watch for Northern and Central river basins, the River Derwent and the Huon River
A cold front will cross the state on Friday morning with an associated low to pass near the south of the state. This weather system will see forecast rainfall of 10 to 30mm, with some locally heavier falls under thunderstorms of 40 to 50mm possible, over catchments in the North and West and extending into parts of the River Derwent and Huon River.
The forecast rainfall will lead to river rises with the possibility of minor flooding developing in catchments from late Friday onwards. The Bureau is monitoring the situation and will issue catchment specific warnings if required.
Strong and dangerous flows are likely to remain a hazard in all catchments during Friday into Saturday.

For people in the Upper Derwent Valley, King Island, Furneaux Islands, Western, South East, East Coast and parts of the North East, North West Coast, Central Plateau and Midlands Forecast Districts.

Weather Situation
A strong cold front southwest of the Bight is rapidly approaching Tasmania while a high to the northeast continues east over the Tasman Sea. This front will bring a strengthening north to northwesterly flow that will become gusty overnight as a low forms on the front just southwest of Tasmania. The flow will then shift lighter west to southwesterly once the front crosses tomorrow morning and another high moves over the Bight.  
DAMAGING NORTH TO NORTHWESTERLY WINDS, averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts in excess of 100 km/h are possible about the west coast tonight, then about the southern half of Tasmania and the east coast from just after midnight.
Winds are expected to tend lighter west to southwesterly behind the cold front as it crosses from the west during Friday morning.
Trees may fall at lower wind speeds than usual due to saturated soil conditions.
Locations which may be affected include St Helens, Swansea, Strahan, New Norfolk, Hobart and Dover. 

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Supervise children closely.
* Check that family and neighbours are aware of warnings.
* Manage pets and livestock.
* Secure outdoor items including furniture and play equipment.
* Be prepared in case of power outages.
* Beware of damaged trees and power lines and take care when driving.
* Listen to the ABC radio or check www.ses.tas.gov.au for further advice.

New mood at Caltex New Norfolk

THE owners of New Norfolk's Caltex petrol station propose to redevelop their site on the corner Montagu and Burnett Streets and adopt the Mood Food brand.

Plans lodged with the Derwent Valley Council by Potter Projects on behalf of Bennett's Petroleum show that the existing building is to be extended to accommodate a new convenience store, takeaway and coffee bar.

Two disused service bays at the 24-hour petrol station will be incorporated into the large new retail area which will also have a unisex accessible toilet.

The plans show that the revamped business will take on the Mood Food brand which until now has been limited to the well-known 24-hour food stop and petrol station on the Midland Highway at Kempton, also operated by Bennett's Petroleum.

The plans can be seen on the Derwent Valley Council website and the full documentation can be viewed at the council offices in Circle St, New Norfolk, until October 26.
