Bicentenary for two founding families

THE 200th anniversary of the arrival of two of the longest-established families in the Derwent Valley will be celebrated at Gretna and New Norfolk later this month.

The Barker-Cawthorn Bicentenary will be held on October 22, 2016, which will be 200 years and three days since Richard Barker and his wife Frances (nee Cawthorn) arrived in the then Van Diemens Land.

Barker had been granted 400 hectares at Macquarie Plains and sailed from Port Jackson, NSW, with his wife and three sons aboard the brig Spring. Louisa Barker's mother (Frances Cawthorn, nee Ford) arrived in Hobart six months later

John and Maria Cawthorn and family arrived in December 1818 to take up a 400ha land grant at Macquarie Plains, adjoining the Barker property.

Descendents, family and friends of Richard and Frances Barker and John and Maria Cawthorn are invited to join a celebration the of the bicentenary of the families' arrival in Tasmania on October 22. There will be historic accounts, interesting anecdotes and tales of these families to share.
