Spelling out a new future

The mystery signage in viewed from Hobart Rd.
PROPS from a failed media stunt have found a new purpose on the outskirts of New Norfolk. Large letters spelling out "Back on the map" appeared in a paddock near the Millbrook Rise boat ramp early yesterday afternoon.

Earlier, the same lettering had been in place at the rear of the Granton Green Reserve where the Derwent Valley Council staged a Federal Election media stunt that failed to attract any media*.

A statement issued by a public relations firm acting for the council explained that the council was calling on politicians to put the Derwent Valley "back on the map" but some are now interpreting the signage to represent that New Norfolk is firmly back on the map following the success of Dark Mofo at Willow Court.

Mona (the Museum of Old and New Art) says the events it presented at Willow Court attracted 12,700 visitors between June 9 and 19. The support of the local community and the commercial sector has been celebrated on a banner at Lees Corner in High St.

* Maybe we're being too harsh. While no media attended the event at Granton yesterday morning, The Derwent Valley Gazette gave it front page coverage today and the Mercury included comments from Mayor Martyn Evans in today's issue.

Big future for promising footballers

Ryan Banks-Smith, Jack Stevenson
and Josh Farrow.
THREE promising Derwent Valley footballers continue to show they have what it takes when it comes to  making the big time in their chosen sport.

Ryan Banks-Smith, Jack Stevenson and Josh Farrow played in the Tasmanian state team that defeated Queensland by the big margin of 43 points in Under 16s Division 2 Championship earlier this month.

Played on home soil at Kingston on June 11, the match was an excellent win for the team which has shown it can match it against the bigger states. These inspiring boys all played well, with Banks-Smith being a standout kicking a goal and featuring in the best players.

All three boys have shown they have plenty of talent and this was evident by their selection in the state squad. They came through the junior teams at New Norfolk and, as a requirement for state selection, now play with TSL club Glenorchy.

The state team will now travel to the Gold Coast to play two more matches, one against the Northern Territory at Metricon Stadium at 1pm July 5 and one against NSW/ACT at Southport on July 9 at 10am. All three boys have again been selected for the team.

New Norfolk 13.8 (86) d Cygnet 8.10 (58)
Despite the Eagles being three places behind the Port on the ladder they managed to claim their best and most convincing win of the season on Saturday. This was a thriller of a game as New Norfolk shocked everybody watching with their form turnaround and took out the win against Cygnet.

The Eagles led the game from the start, managing a 10-point lead at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter was all about the Eagles as they showed everybody at the ground how to use the home ground advantage to perfection.

In the third quarter, Cygnet narrowed the margin but still could only come within 13 points of the Eagles. By the time the third-quarter siren sounded the Port had managed five goals, while New Norfolk only claimed one but still managed to hold the lead.

During the fourth quarter the Port had more than enough opportunities to take the lead over the Eagles but due to their inaccurate kicking and New Norfolk’s strong defence they remained goalless.

Rohan Heron and Michael Thompson kicked three goals each for the Eagles, while Jacob Wigg and Clint Curtain finished with two for the game.

In the Reserves game Cygnet held on to a 26-point lead, while in the Under 18s Southern Storm managed a 68-point win over New Norfolk.

The Lions took out a 77-point win and moved up into third spot on the ladder. In the Reserves the Lions claimed the win with a nine-point victory after a tight game, while Dodges Ferry took out the Under 18 game with a 40-point win.

Councillor says keep the Rosehaven set

Rosehaven stars Luke McGregor and
Celia Pacquola.
THE Rosehaven set in High St should be retained as a tourist attraction, Derwent Valley Councillor James Graham said last week.

Rosehaven is an eight-part comedy written by Celia Pacquola and Luke McGregor. Tasmanian-born McGregor plays a man who returns home to run his parents' real estate business in the fictitious town of Rosehaven, which through the magic of television will mostly be made up from locations in the Derwent Valley.

The production has filmed locally at several places in New Norfolk and Lachlan, initially spending a few days on location in Circle St. There was also great interest when driving scenes were filmed in the Avenues area of New Norfolk North.

Filming outside "McCallum Real
Estate" recently.

It's been suggested that the Rosehaven
real estate office could be left in place.
An empty shop at 55 High St has been transformed into the office of "McCallum Real Estate", where two weeks of filming was carried out, including a street protest scene.

Cr Graham said there would be many people wanting to see where the ABC-TV comedy series was filmed once it hit the small screen. He suggested that the council could ask for the set to be left in place once the production has wrapped up.

The producers are hopeful the first series of Rosehaven - to be aired later this year - will be the start of a long-running flagship comedy on the ABC.

The town of Minyip in Victoria continues to attract fans of the 1980s medical drama The Flying Doctors 25 years after it ceased production, while Pitt Town and surrounds in the Hawkesbury region of New South Wales still offer A Country Practice tours more than two decades after that show ended.

Five polling booths disappear

PEOPLE intending to vote at Ellendale, Gretna, Hamilton, Bronte Park or Maydena in next Saturday's Federal Election will have to make other plans.

Following a review of polling places by the Australian Electoral Commission, 16 fewer polling booths will be operated in the Lyons electorate. It has been reported that 730 booths have closed across Australia, including 38 in Tasmania.

The Derwent Valley has been hit particularly hard, losing five federal polling places. Based on the number of votes cast at those locations in the 2013 Federal Election, nearly 700 people will have to find an alternative polling place.

SFL Round 12 preview

Southern Football League match preview
Round 12 - Provided by SFL League Management

New Norfolk v Cygnet at Boyer, 2pm Saturday
New Norfolk has had two weeks off to prepare for this game at home against Cygnet, but Cygnet has had some big wins in recent weeks, making this one a tough contest.

The last game New Norfolk played was against the unbeaten Lindisfarne where the Eagles dropped off in form after three solid wins in a row. They will be looking for a return to form against Cygnet this weekend.

Round 11 saw Cygnet pull off a massive win against Brighton on the road, leaving the Port sitting in third spot on the ladder and trying to chase down the reigning premiers in the quest for a sought after home final.

Both teams have a lot to play for this weekend as they seek to improve their position on the ladder and prove they’re going to be one of the teams to beat in the second half of the season. This will be an interesting match to watch.

Claremont v Sorell at Abbotsfield Park, 2pm
Now that we have passed the middle of the season teams are beginning to get focused for a run at the final five. The reigning premiers will be sure to put up a strong effort this weekend and it will take a lot of skill and determination for Sorell to stand a chance in this game.

Huonville v Dodges Ferry at Huonville, 2pm
Both teams came home with massive wins in Round 11 and it will be a good match to see who can come through with the win again this week. Huonville has the advantage of the home ground and a higher spot on the ladder, but Dodges Ferry won’t go down without a fight.

Brighton v Hobart at Pontville, 2pm
Brighton and Hobart are both recovering from big losses so this will be a good match for them both to prove what they have to deliver for their supporters and the rest of the season.

Band celebrates tunes from stage and screen

MUSIC from some of the great shows of stage and screen will be celebrated in a special election night concert to be given by the Derwent Valley Concert Band. The performance will be at 7.30pm on July 2 in the Stanley Burbury Theatre at the University of Tasmania campus at Sandy Bay.

The band promises that brain cells deadened by the federal election campaign will be rejuvenated by Joe Hisaishi’s amazing score to the Anime movie Spirited Away. "Relax and recuperate by singing along (perhaps not too loudly) with those wonderful songs from South Pacific and the Wizard of Oz, a band spokesman said.

"Shake off your body’s torpor by dancing (on the inside please) to Leonard Bernstein’s stunning music from West Side Story and be completely amazed by the brilliant pianistic skills of Thomas Misson when he performs Richard Addinsell’s timeless classic, Warsaw Concerto."

After interval, another talented pianist, Jennifer Yu, will join Misson to perform two short pieces from Tim Burton’s The Corpse Bride. Yu, with the DVCB Wind Quintet, will also present the Carl Davis theme music to the BBC 1995 television series Pride and Prejudice.

Other music on the program will come from the video game Halo, as well as The Man From Snowy River, The Nightmare before Christmas and Hymn to the Fallen from Saving Private Ryan.

Refreshments will be available and admission is by donation.

New Norfolk hospitals in the news

TWO New Norfolk hospitals were the subject of discussion at Budget Estimates hearings in Hobart earlier this month. The New Norfolk District Hospital and the Millbrook Rise Centre were brought up in Legislative Council Estimates Committee A on June 7.

Health Minister Michael Ferguson said it was proposed to make better use of regional health facilities, focusing on the New Norfolk District Hospital in particular. "I assure the committee and the community that we are committed to all of our rural sites," Mr Ferguson said. "If anything, the Government, in my view, is that we need to be looking for opportunities to better utilise our rural sites. New Norfolk, in particular, holds that prospect very much before us."

Tasmanian Health Service acting chief operating officer Craig Watson said much work had been done around how to better utilise rural hospitals to assist the major acute hospitals. "The minister has referred to the New Norfolk Hospital and would have referenced that because we are probably looking at making that a bit of an earlier adopter or exemplar of some of the works we are trying to do in relation to better utilising the facilities," Mr Watson said.

"New Norfolk has advantages in terms of its proximity, if you like, to where the Royal [Hobart Hospital] is, the number of beds and the skills of the people we have there, the attractiveness of it as a facility," Mr Watson said. The THS had already been engaging with New Norfolk's general practitioners about better ways to utilise the local hospital.

Lessons learned at New Norfolk would then be rolled out to other facilities. "This will be addressing a combination of factors of having the right relationships with the GPs and their willingness to take patients under their care ... making sure we have the appropriate staffing within the hospitals, the nursing staffing, but also the access to allied health services, to support patients who are transitioned from our acute setting from our major hospitals into that facility, as well as having the right information available to actually encourage patients to be willing and agreeable to do that.

Mr Watson said it was also important for doctors in the major hospitals to understand that it was safe for patients to move from their care to the rural facilities. "Sometimes there is even some tendency to hang on to a patient a bit long within the acute hospital because sometimes they are not as aware of the care that is available within the rural facility and that the patient can be ready to go," Mr Watson said.

"So that is a variety of different pieces of work that we are undertaking and trialling different elements at different facilities, but we are looking at New Norfolk certainly as, as I said, an earlier adopter of that. As I said, the ability to market it to patients because it is an attractive facility, it has nice sized spaces within there, it has a nice outlook."

Later on the same day, Derwent MLC Craig Farrell asked whether there were any plans or ideas for the Millbrook Rise Centre on the outskirts of New Norfolk, and whether the services there could be expanded or improved. Mr Ferguson offered to write to Mr Farrell about the government's vision for the mental health facility there. He said the government had recently purchased the property from its private owner.

"I would be pleased to write to you and offer you further briefing if you would like it, because I know it is in your patch in your seat of Derwent. But, yes, we have made that purchase on behalf of the Crown and we certainly are maintaining and indeed increasing our efforts to provide appropriate care and more options for people to continue to live happy lives away from hospital," Mr Ferguson said.

While the Two Blues delivered it to the Magpies in the senior game, Claremont came out on top in the earlier matches with a 65-point win in the Reserves and a 23-point win in the Under 18s.

Huonville 19.17 (131) d Sorell 5.5 (35)

Cygnet 21.8 (134) d Brighton 12.10 (82)

Funds for three community groups

VOLUNTEERS at New Norfolk and National Park will benefit from a share of this year's Commonwealth Volunteer Grants. Federal Member for Lyons Eric Hutchinson said grants had been awarded to the Lions Club of New Norfolk, Derwent Valley Rotary Club and the Friends of Mt Field.

“The Lions Club of New Norfolk will receive $4777 for computer equipment, office equipment and outdoor equipment, and the Derwent Valley Rotary Club will use their $4500 for outdoor furniture and equipment,” Mr Hutchinson said. The Friends of Mt Field will receive $1230 to assist with fuel costs, landscaping and gardening.

“The grant funding is designed to make the work of volunteer organisations easier, safer and more enjoyable. The investment delivers vital support to small community organisations and the dozens of local volunteers involved,” Mr Hutchinson said.

The grants of between $1000 and $5000 enable local organisations to better support their volunteers and the community by purchasing equipment and computers, helping with training and meeting fuel costs, or undertaking background security checks.

All-clear for three water supplies

LIFTING of the boil-water alert affecting people at Lawitta, Boyer and Dromedary has been approved by the Department of Health and Human Services. The warning was issued on June 8 after heavy rain resulted in floodwaters impacting on the water supply.

Extensive cleaning of reservoirs has taken place along with significant flushing of the reticulation system. Recent tests have demonstrated that the system no longer poses a risk allowing for the director of public health to lift the alert.

TasWater acting chief executive Dean Page thanked residents for their patience during the period of the boil water alert. Mr Page said residents and businesses would receive written a notice over the coming days informing them of the Boil Water Alert being lifted.

The boil-water alert for National Park, Westerway and Fentonbury remains in place. TasWater says water quality in the area has been affected by floodwater following recent severe weather conditions.

Fentonbury.

National Park.

Westerway.
Affected customers are advised to bring their drinking water to a boil by heating the water until a continuous and rapid stream of air-bubbles is produced from the bottom of a pan or kettle. Kettles with automatic cut-off switches are suitable, and variable temperature kettles should be set to "boil".

After heating, water must be allowed to cool before using it, and be stored in a clean, closed container for later use. Care should be taken to avoid scalding injuries.

Customers in the affected areas should boil all water used for:
  • Drinking
  • Brushing teeth
Washing and preparing food or beverages
  • Preparing baby formula
  • Cooking rice.

Unboiled water may be used for:
  • Showering and bathing (avoid swallowing water). As a precaution babies and toddlers should be sponge-bathed to prevent them swallowing water
  • Washing dishes by hand or in a dishwasher, providing dishes are air-dried before being used after washing
  • Washing clothes.

The Department of Health and Human Services advises that consumption of unboiled water could lead to nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal cramps and a general feeling of being unwell. If you are concerned that you may have been affected by contaminated water please contact your doctor and advise them about the boil-water alert.

The state's chief veterinary officer has advised TasWater that there is no increased risk to animals drinking mains-supply water in towns under a Boil Water advisory.

For details on boil water procedures or for more information, visit www.taswater.com.au or phone 13 69 92.

THE performance titled Entry by Mirror Only has now concluded but there are still more opportunities to visit Willow Court this week. Mike Parr completed his 72-hour presentation at noon yesterday, but his Asylum exhibition continues today and this weekend.

Selected items from Parr’s previous performances have been curated to form Asylum, a one-off installation occupying different buildings including the Barracks, Carlton House/C Ward, Alonnah House/A Ward, and the Occupational Therapy building, with video, sound, photos, objects and an interactive piece.
  • Open today, Monday June 13, 12-4pm

  • Open Sunday June 19, 12-4pm
Entry is now general admission, no bookings required. Dark MoFo still requests that visitors bring a mirror to add to the exhibition.

There will be occasional street entertainment and food vans in the New Norfolk central business district until Sunday. More than 40 local shops and businesses have been decorated with red lights and mirrors in support of Dark MoFo and many private homes have also adopted the same theme. No plan for Port Arthur to run Willow Court

A PROPOSAL to have the Port Arthur Historic Site Management Authority (PAHSMA) take responsibility for Maria Island National Park will not be expanded to include Willow Court.

Environment, Parks and Heritage Minister Matthew Groom last week said a working group was examining the potential transfer of Maria Island management to PAHSMA. Mr Groom said the group was being chaired by PAHSMA conservation and infrastructure director Jane Harrington. "I think we can do better to celebrate the extraordinary convict heritage that exists on Maria Island," Mr Groom said.

Addressing a Budget Estimates Hearing in Hobart last Wednesday, Mr Groom said he was excited about the opportunity and $220,000 had been allocated in the State Budget. "This can be a significant step change for how Maria Island is presented to the world," he said.

Lyons Labor MHA David Llewellyn asked whether the minister would have Port Arthur look at the management of Willow Court precinct at New Norfolk. "That facility predates Port Arthur. It is one of the iconic sites from a convict heritage point of view, and yet does not get the attention it deserves," Mr Llewellyn said. "Will you also have Dr Harrington look at the management of the Willow Court precinct with its barracks and buildings?"

Mr Groom rejected the notion, saying: "I have made it very clear that this specific inquiry, investigation, assessment, and working group task is focused on the Maria Island opportunity."

Mr Llewellyn said he was not being critical of the minister's decision. "For a long time I have put the point of view that PAHSMA ought to be the people who are administering that wonderful icon at New Norfolk."

Mr Groom acknowledged that Willow Court was an extraordinary place. "It has an incredible story to be told there," he said. "I know there have been a lot of efforts, in fact, there has been a fair bit happening at Willow Court, significant new activities."

"There are some really exciting examples of how Willow Court has been better celebrated and where the stories are told and people are invited in to experience that extraordinary location.  It really is remarkable," Mr Groom said.  "As for the current work we are doing about the expansion of PAHSMA's role, it is something that we are limiting to the Maria Island opportunity.  We think that is important to give it focus and make sure we get it right."

Boyer line to re-open on Tuesday

THE southern rail line connecting Boyer, Brighton and Conara is expected to re-open on Tuesday following last week's complete closure of the rail network due to flooding throughout the state.

The Conara Rail Terminal will open from Tuesday, enabling freight from Boyer and Brighton to be loaded on to trucks and transported to the ports of Devonport and Burnie and to bypass the worst of the flood affected Western Line in the Deloraine-Kimberley area.

TasRail asks the public to be alert for trains operating on this route. “We are progressively restoring rail services across large sections of the network," TasRail chief executive Damien White said.

"Where the most serious damage has occurred, we are taking steps to maintain freight movements by combining both rail and road transport options. Our priorities continue to be ensuring the immediate needs of our customers are met while ensuring the continued safety and wellbeing of our workforce," Mr White said.

“TasRail would like to publicly acknowledge the commitment of its workforce to achieving the re-opening of the rail network as quickly as possible,” he said.

for Upper Derwent Valley, Central North, Western, Central Plateau and Midlands forecast districts

Issued at 9:11pm on Saturday 11 June 2016.

Snow and ice will make driving conditions dangerous tonight for susceptible roads in the Western and Central Plateau forecast districts.

Icy roads will make driving conditions dangerous tomorrow morning in parts of the Central North, Western, Central Plateau, Midlands and Upper Derwent Valley forecast districts.

For information on any road closures, please contact your local council or the Police.

The next alert will be issued by 5am Sunday.

Food to go

LOCALS wanting something different for dinner tonight can choose between several food vans which have popped up in the town centre tonight.

There are two vans and a busker outside the New Norfolk Post Office in High St tonight and another food van can be found in Burnett St outside the Chinese therapy shop, roughly opposite McDonalds (don't be put off by it looking like an SES van).

Several local businesses are also open later than usual, with plenty of food options in the pubs and takeways too.

The food vans have been organised by the Derwent Valley Council in support of the Dark MoFo events in New Norfolk but no schedule has been provided, so going up the street is bound to bring a few surprises over the next week or so.

* A New Norfolk News reader suggests that Van Demons Cafe de Wheels and GASPmobile food trucks will be in town on Monday.
