Severe Weather Warning
for damaging winds and heavy rainfall
for people in the Upper Derwent Valley, North East, Midlands, East Coast and South East forecast districts

 HEAVY RAIN AND DAMAGING WINDS FOR EASTERN TASMANIA DURING MONDAY

Weather Situation

A very moist northeasterly airstream has brought exceptionally heavy rain and damaging winds to the northern half of Tasmania. The heavy rain and damaging winds have contracted to the east and southeast of Tasmania, and will gradually ease tomorrow as a trough slowly moves over the state.

 DAMAGING WINDS around 50 km/h with peak gusts of 90 km/h are forecast for the East and Northeast facing coastlines south of a line from Bicheno to Maatsuyker Island. The strong winds will gradually ease tomorrow morning.

 Heavy rain which may lead to FLASH FLOODING is forecast for the South East, East Coast and the southern half of the North East, Midlands and Upper Derwent Valley forecast districts. For the remainder of the day, rainfall totals of 20mm to 40mm are expected, with in excess of 50mm possible around windward coasts and elevated areas. Rainfall is expected to ease tomorrow morning.

 Since 9am this morning, Mt Wellington has recorded 34mm of rain, followed by 27mm at Interlaken and Maydena.

 The State Emergency Service and Tasmania Police advise that people should:

  • Supervise children closely
  • Secure outdoor items including furniture and play equipment
  • Check that family and neighbours are aware of warnings
  • Manage pets and livestock
  • Be prepared in case of power outages
  • Clear drains and gutters on premises prior to severe weather arriving
  • Do not walk, ride or drive through flood waters
  • Beware of damaged trees and power lines and take care when driving
  • Listen to the ABC radio or check www.ses.tas.gov.au for further advice

 The next warning will be issued by 11pm Monday.
