Redlands sold to leading winemaker

LEADING Australian winemaker Casella Family Brands has acquired the Redlands Estate near New Norfolk. Reportedly worth $3.7 million, the deal was announced last week. “We’re delighted to be the new custodians of this iconic property," Casella Family Brands managing director John Casella said.

"Land ownership, agriculture, farming, growing crops and owning vineyards are an intrinsic part of our family history dating back to the early 1800s. As soon as we saw Redlands and understood its connection to the land, and ties to the local community, we couldn’t help but feel drawn to it. It’s a very special place; we’re proud to own a rare piece of Australian history and be a part of the next chapter,”  Mr Casella said.

Under previous owners Peter and Elizabeth Hope, Redlands Estate served as a family residence, working farm and whisky distillery, which has since relocated. The Casella family plans to spend the next few years continuing with the restoration of the property and its extensive grounds.

“The estate offers enormous potential. It’s very early days but we intend to continue with the careful restoration of the heritage buildings and beautiful gardens, maintaining the original features, natural beauty and charm it exudes," Casella Family Brands commercial director Daniel Casella said. "With its proximity to Hobart, fertile land and the fascinating stories deeply embedded in its history, our long-term vision is to re-establish Redlands as a must visit tourism destination in Tasmania.”

Mr Hope said the time was right to hand over the iconic property. "We’re delighted that Redlands will remain under Australian family ownership and have no doubt the Casella family will give it the time, love and attention it deserves," he said. "The Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Farming and High Quality Safe Foods will continue and I’m sure Redlands will continue to play an integral role in the local community and tourism.”

Casella Family Brands is a family-owned company based at Yenda, NSW. Well-known for its successful Yellow Tail brand, Casella describes itself as Australia’s largest family wine company. It has recently branched into fine wine offerings, acquiring Peter Lehmann Wines from the Barossa and Brand’s Laira from Coonawarra.
