No further flooding is expected throughout the River Derwent basin, with all river levels now below their minor flood levels and easing.
Up to 17mm of rainfall was recorded in the River Derwent catchment in the 24 hours to 9 AM Sunday. No significant further rainfall is expected during Sunday. Observed rainfall and snow melt may maintain high river levels throughout the Derwent catchment on Sunday.
Some storages within the Derwent system are at high levels, with several dams spilling.
Strong flows may be a hazard throughout the Derwent catchment for the next few days.

River levels in the upper reaches of the Derwent catchment are expected to remain below their minor flood levels Sunday into Monday. Some storages within the Derwent system are at high levels, with several dams spilling.

Fine first day of skiing at Mt Field

Skiing on the university run at Mt Mawson today. 

THE southern Tasmanian ski season kicked off in style at the Mt Mawson ski field at Mt Field National Park today.

Peter Davis of the Southern Tasmanian Ski Association writes on the Mt Mawson blog that a keen crowd turned up to enjoy sunny, calm and clear conditions on the mountain.

"It was a very social day, as lots of STSA volunteers came up to lend a hand to help get the ski field operational," Dr Davis wrote. "As always it was a great team effort to get the skiing under way."

"The shovelling started on Friday evening as we started to prepare the tow path for the visitors, and continued with a big effort at the top of the Mawson tow this morning where the wind had sculpted a two metre high snow drift over the top of the rope," he said.

"A big thanks to everyone who helped out, and to the volunteers from the Hobart Walking Club - many of whom are not skiers - and the Alpine Club of Tasmania who are on duty for this weekend. Everyone had a great day today, and with a little more snow forecast overnight it augurs well for another good day tomorrow."

The ski tows will be open from 10am on Sunday. Dress warmly and take something to eat and drink. Day tickets cost $30 which the STSA says is the cheapest downhill skiing in Australia.

"Take care on the Lake Dobson Rd as there are deep culverts beside the road in a number of places," Dr Davis said. "Exercise caution when moving over to let other cars past, as getting too close to the edge of the road could lead to an unwanted excursion into the ditch. Check the road status with Parks, but expect that you will need to carry - and possibly fit - snow chains.

"It's worth the effort – come on up and check out the snow at Southern Tasmania’s only operating ski field for a unique Tasmanian winter experience," he said.

Minor flooding is not expected to extend downstream to Macquarie Plains and New Norfolk overnight Saturday into Sunday.
Up to 15mm of rainfall was recorded in the River Derwent catchment in the 24 hours to 9 AM Saturday. Further rainfall, up to 15 mm, is possible overnight Saturday into Sunday in the upper parts of the River Derwent catchment. Police to lay charges over house fire

The Pioneer Ave property.

TWO teenagers are facing charges over a fire in a vacant police residence in Pioneer Ave earlier this week.


Police say a 15-year-old and a 14-year-old will be proceeded against following the fire which occurred in the early hours last Tuesday, July 26.  The pair will be summonsed to appear in
the Youth Justice Court, each facing one count of arson.


The fire is estimated to have caused about $200,000 damage to the house which had reportedly been vacant for some months. "No member of the public was at risk and there is no suggestion that the fire was deliberately targeted at police," a spokesman said.


Anyone with information, or who may have seen people acting suspiciously, is asked to call Bridgewater CIB on 13 14 44 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Police youth club for New Norfolk

The Derwent Valley Sport and Recreation Centre is set to become
a Police Youth and Citizens Club.

THE Derwent Valley Sport and Recreation Centre will soon reopen as the Derwent Valley Police Youth and Citizens Club (PCYC).

Built in the 1970s and originally known as the New Norfolk Sports Centre, the building off Derwent Terrace was built and managed by an incorporated association but it has been operated by the Derwent Valley Council for the last decade. As well as the main basketball stadium, the building has other facilities including squash courts and a sauna which have been closed for some time.

Derwent Valley Council general manager Greg Winton told a recent council meeting that a partnership had been proposed with the PCYC for future management and development of the centre. "The proposal by the PCYC presents a unique opportunity for the Derwent Valley community to partner with [an] organisation with a strong ethical history that has the capacity to not only manage the centre, but also enhance the offer to the Derwent Valley community," Mr Winton said in a report.

Mr Winton said it was likely that the partnership would strengthen a number of social service activities provided within the community. The council agreed unanimously to enter into an agreement with the PCYC to operate the sports centre and to provide up to $20,000 towards improvements to the building plus an annual contribution of $35,000 towards wages.

PCYC signage has recently been added to the building and renovations are believed to be under way prior to an official opening some time in August. A briefing was provided to sports centre users last week.

With New Norfolk moving up into the top three on the ladder, and with the Tigers experiencing big losses in the last three rounds, it is likely that the Eagles will come out on top this weekend.

New Norfolk had a slow start to the season, but in recent weeks has been playing great football and now sees itself having a real chance in the finals just like in seasons past. The Tigers have been lacking in recent weeks and it would do the team good to have a win this week and move back into top five contentions.

Hobart has shown its their strengths throughout the season but inconsistency has been a major issue and it would be good to see a determined performance against the Eagles this weekend.

In the 24 hours to 9AM Thursday, rainfall totals of 30 to 50mm have been reported about the upper reaches of the catchment. Widespread rainfall totals of 10 to 20mm are forecast in the Derwent catchment over the next 24 hours, with higher totals possible about elevated areas. Snow melt is expected to increase runoff. 
Some storages within the Derwent system are at high levels, with several dams spilling. Lake King William has started to spill for the first time since 2013. This will result in elevated river levels in the River Derwent downstream of the dam.

Minor Flood Warning for the River Derwent

Flood Warning Number: 2
Minor flooding may develop in the lower reaches of the Derwent River below Meadowbank Dam during Thursday in response to forecast rainfall.
In the 24 hours to 9AM Thursday, rainfall totals of 30 to 50mm have been reported about the upper reaches of the catchment. Widespread rainfall totals of 10 to 20 mm are forecast in the Derwent catchment over the next 24 hours, with higher totals possible about elevated areas. Snow melt is expected to increase runoff. 
Some storages within the Derwent system are at high levels, with several dams spilling. During Thursday, Lake King William is expected to spill for the first time since 2013. This will result in elevated river levels in the River Derwent downstream of the dam.
Strong and dangerous flows may be a hazard throughout the Derwent catchment for the next few days.

River Derwent above River Ouse:

River rises are expected in the upper reaches of the Derwent catchment during Thursday. Some storages within the Derwent system are at high levels, with several dams spilling. During Thursday, Lake King William is expected to spill for the first time since 2013. This will result in elevated river levels downstream.

River Derwent above Meadowbank Dam:

River rises are expected in the middle reaches of the Derwent catchment during Thursday.

River Derwent below Meadowbank Dam:

Minor flooding may occur along the River Derwent below Meadowbank Dam.

The River Derwent below Meadowbank Dam is currently at 3.53 metres and steady. The River Derwent below Meadowbank Dam may exceed the minor flood level (4.10 m) Thursday afternoon.
The River Derwent at Macquarie Plains is currently at 2.50 metres and steady. The River Derwent at Macquarie Plains may exceed the minor flood level (4.00 m) Thursday afternoon.

River Derwent around New Norfolk:

Minor flooding is likely along the River Derwent around New Norfolk.
