Severe Weather Warning
for damaging winds
for people in the Upper Derwent Valley, King Island, Furneaux Islands, North West Coast, Central North, North East, Western, Central Plateau, Midlands, East Coast and South East forecast districts

Issued at 4:20pm on Wednesday 13 July 2016.

Weather Situation

A strong and cold west to southwesterly stream is expected to persist over Tasmania tonight and tomorrow.

DAMAGING WINDS around 70 km/h with peak gusts up to 120 km/h are forecast for King Island, the Furneaux Islands and parts of the Western, North West Coast and South East forecast districts, developing over the Upper Derwent Valley, Central North and North East tonight, and the remainder of the state early on Thursday.
In the last 6 hours, the strongest recorded gusts were 133 km/h at Cape Grim, 109 km/h at Cape Bruny and 107 km/h at Cape Sorell.

The State Emergency Service and Tasmania Police advise that people should:
  • Supervise children closely
  • Secure outdoor items including furniture and play equipment
  • Check that family and neighbours are aware of warnings
  • Manage pets and livestock
  • Be prepared in case of power outages
  • Beware of damaged trees and power lines and take care when driving
  • Listen to the ABC radio or check www.ses.tas.gov.au for further advice
