Flood watch for Friday

INITIAL FLOOD WATCH FOR ALL TASMANIAN RIVER BASINS

Issued at 10:21 am EST on Thursday 21 July 2016

A flood watch has been issued for all Tasmanian river basins.

A significant cold front will cross Tasmania early Friday and associated lows will pass to the south. Another front will cross the state Friday evening bringing a cold southwesterly stream overnight. These systems will bring rain to the north, west, and south of the State starting early afternoon Thursday and intensifying overnight. The heaviest falls are expected about elevated areas in the North and West.

Rainfall totals of 20 to 30mm are likely across the large parts of the State Thursday evening into Friday, with higher totals up to 60mm possible about elevated areas of the Western Tiers and the Northeast Highlands. Further rainfall is expected throughout the remainder of the weekend.

Catchments throughout the State are saturated after significant rainfall.

Minor to moderate flooding may develop in some basins from Friday morning onwards. Catchment specific flood warnings will be issued if and when required.

Strong flows are likely in small creeks and low lying areas in locations that receive heavy rainfall on Friday.
